  • The supply of oxygen for aeration is the largest energy consumer at activated sludge wastewater treatment plants. Replacement of less efficient aeration systems with fine pore aeration devices can save up to 50 percent of aeration energy costs. The purpose of this study was the diagnosis and evaluation of a domestic wastewater aeration system by the off-gas method which had been studied by US EPA and ASCE. For this study, an off-gas analyzer and its hood were made to collect off-gas. Also, a vacuum pump was connected to the analyzer to make suction of off-gas. Experiments were conducted at a domestic activated sludge wastewater treatment plant which had a single spiral roll aeration system installed with P.E tube diffuser. Data on OTE(f), SOTE(pw), OUR, and air flow rate were obtained from these experiments. In case of replacing an aeration system, it is recommended that it should be replaced with perforated membrane disc or ceramic disc fine bubble diffusers installed in a full floor coverage or grid pattern.

  • Development of new ceramic and esthetic need of patient increased the use of ceramic restorations. The purpose of this study was to confirm the possibility of recycling for IPS Empress2 which has a lot of advantages in esthetics. 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed disc-shaped($10{\times}1.5mm$) IPS Empress 2 specimens were made with IPS Empress ingot(shade 200, Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) and pressing furnace(IPS Empress EP 500, Ivoclar, Liechtenstein). Flexure strength was measured with universal testing machine(Zwick 145641, Zwick, Germany), and color change and staining resistance of specimens were evaluated with colorimeter (Model TC-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku Co., Japan). The followings were drawn from this study : 1. Flexure strength of the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd pressed specimens showed 236.78 MPa. 247.16MPa, and 220.72MPa, respectively. Flexure strength of the 2nd pressed specimens was higher than others, but there's no statistical difference between them. 2. The color difference between the 1st and the 2nd pressed specimens was 3.25, and that between the 1st and the 3rd pressed specimens was 3.63(P<0.05). 3. The color change after staining of the 1st, the 2nd. and the 3rd pressed specimens were 1.43, 2.64, and 1.45, respectively. In this study, reused IPS Empress 2 specimens showed insignificant change of flexure strength and stain resistance, but they showed some color change according to reuse. From this results, the limited possibility of reuse for IPS Empress 2 could be considered.

  • Diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings were deposited on alumina ceramic seals using a plasma immersion ion deposition technique (PIID). Then they were subjected to tribological tests using a pin-on-disc tribometer under a high load (1.3 GPa) and under elevated temperatures up to 400C. Coefficients of friction (COFs) were recorded and compared with that of the untreated alumina while the wear tracks were analyzed using SEM with EDS to characterize the DLC films. To enhance the DLC adhesion to the substrate, various interlayers including Si and Cr were deposited using the PIID process or an ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method. It was observed that the DLC coating, if adhering well to the substrate, reduced the COFs significantly, from 0.4-0.8 for the uncoated alumina to about 0.05-0.1, within the tested temperature range. The adhesion was determined by the interlayer type and possibly by the application method. Cr interlayer did not perform as well as the Si interlayer. This could also be due to the fact that the Cr interlayer and the subsequent DLC coating had to be done in two different processing systems, while both the Si interlayer and the subsequent DLC film were deposited in one system without breaking the chamber. The coating failure mode was found to be delamination between the Cr and the alumina substrate. In contrast, the Si interlayer with proper DLC deposition procedures resulted in very good adhesion and hence excellent tribological performance. Further study may lead to future DLC applications of ceramic seals.

  • Objectives: There has been a growing interest in glass ceramic systems with good esthetics, high fracture resistance and bonding durability, and simplified fabrication techniques using CAD/CAM. The aim of this study is to compare flexural strength before and after heat treatment of two lithium disilicate CAD/CAM blocks, IPS e.max CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Rosetta SM (Hass), and to observe their crystalline structures. Materials and Methods: Biaxial flexural strength was tested according to ISO 6872 with 20 disc form specimens sliced from each block before and after heat treatment. Also, the crystalline structures were observed using field-emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM, Hitachi) and x-ray diffraction (XRD, Rigaku) analysis. The mean values of the biaxial flexural strength were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test at a significance level of p = 0.05. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in flexural strength between IPS e.max CAD and Rosetta SM either before heat treatment or after heat treatment. For both ceramics, the initial flexural strength greatly increased after heat treatment, with significant differences (p < 0.05). The FE-SEM images presented similar patterns of crystalline structure in the two ceramics. In the XRD analysis, they also had similar patterns, presenting high peak positions corresponding to the standard lithium metasilicate and lithium disilicate at each stage of heat treatment. Conclusions: IPS e.max CAD and Rosetta SM showed no significant differences in flexural strength. They had a similar crystalline pattern and molecular composition.

  • PURPOSE. To investigate and compare the surface roughness (SR), weight and height of monolithic zirconia (MZ), ceramometal (CM), lithium disilicate glass ceramic (LD), composite resin (CR), and their antagonistic human teeth enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 32 disc shaped specimens for the four test materials (n=8) and 32 premolars were prepared and randomly divided. SR, weight and height of the materials and the antagonist enamel were recorded before and after subjecting the specimens to 240,000 wear-cycles ($49N/0.8Hz/5^{\circ}C/50^{\circ}C$). SR, height, weight, and digital microscopic qualitative evaluation were measured. RESULTS. CM ($0.23+0.08{\mu}m$) and LD ($0.68+0.16{\mu}m$) exhibited the least and highest mean difference in the SR, respectively. ANOVA revealed significance (P=.001) between the materials for the SR. Paired T-Test showed significance (P<.05) for the pre- and post- SR for all the materials. For the antagonistic enamel, no significance (P=.987) was found between the groups. However, the pre- and post- SR values of all the enamel groups were significant (P<.05). Wear cycles had significant effect on enamel weight loss against all the materials (P<.05). CR and MZ showed the lowest and highest height loss of 0.14 mm and 0.46 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION. MZ and CM are more resistant to SR against the enamel than LD and CR. Enamel worn against test materials showed similar SR. Significant variations in SR values for the tested materials (MZ, LD, CM, and CR) against the enamel were found. Wear simulation significantly affected the enamel weight loss against all the materials, and enamel antagonist against MZ and CM showed more height loss.

  • Although the factors that cause the failure of orthopedic implants were not clearly determined, it was reported that the shapes of wear debris affect the tribological behavior of artificial implant. Many researches were conducted to examine the wear mechanism by debris but the role of debris shape in inflammatory reaction remains unclear. To observe the debris shape by addition of reinforcement, carbon nanotubes ( CNTs ) were added to ultra high molecular weight polyethylene ( UHMWPE ) to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNTs. CNTs which have a diameter of about 10-50 nm, while their length is about 3-5 nm were produced by the catalytic decomposition of the acetylene gas using a tube furnace. Plate on disc type wear test were performed to evaluate the tribological performance of UHMWPE composites reinforced with CNTs in lubricating condition ( bovine serum ). The wear losses of CNT added UHMWPE in bovine serum were significantly reduced. Worn surface and wear debris of UHMWPE with CNTs and without CNTs were compared to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNT on tribological behavior.

  • Deep-water sonar transducers of FFR (Free Flooded Ring) type have been designed using a coupled FE-BEM. The proposed sonar transducers are composed of piezoelectric ceramic tubes and structural steel materials for simple fabrication. In order to have an omnidirectional beam pattern around 30 kHz, a conic steel is placed below a piezoelectric tube or a steel disc is placed between two piezoelectric tubes. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Various results are available such as directivity patterns and transmitting voltage responses. The most optimal structure and dimensions of the steel material were calculated, so that the beam patterns of the sonar transducers had +/- 3 dB omnidirectivity at 30 kHz.

  • The dry sliding wear properties of the sintered Cu-10 wt%Sn bronze alloys reinforced with $SiC_w$ and $SiC_p$ were investigated by a pin-on-disc wear testing machine. The worn surfaces and the cross sections of the wear specimens and the wear debris were observed by SEM to study the effect of the variation of the ceramic phase contents in the composite and the wear condition on the wear behaviors. The wear of bronze matrix was dominated by the adhesive wear. The transition from mild to severe wear was found in the bronze matrix specimens at the applied load higher than 20N where the surface delamination caused the severe wear. The addition of $SiC_w$ and $SiC_p$ reinforcements in the romposites was proved to reduce the wear rate by the matrix strengthening at the applied load higher than 20N. SiC whiskers having a large length to diameter ratio which hold the deformed matrix were effective to hinder the crack propagation near the worn surface. Thus the maximum wear resistance was obtained in the composite reinforced by $SiC_w$ at the higher applied load.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the change of marginal distortion related to heat treatment and surface treatment in. Thirty copings were made on the self-curing resin dies and twenty coping among them were treated by heat and surface grinding. All copings were adapted on the respective dies and then were invested into the plastic boxes with tray resin. Both copiong and die invested in tray resin were cut through labio-lingually by a separating disc. This cross-cutting surface was ground and polished. Specimens were mounted on a light microscope and photographed. Marginal discrepancies were measured on photographes by a scale. The obtained results could be summarized in the followings : 1. In all metal copings, the distortion of cervical margin was shown after heat treatment and surface treatment. 2. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal fitness between shoulder and deep chamfer. 3. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal fitness between labial margin and lingual margin in one die. 4. In case of the copings which were not treated with preheating and were treated with surface grinding, the marginal distortion shows a tendency to increase.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the fracture strength of the dental zirconia veneering ceramics for zirconia ceramic core. Six commercial zirconia veneering ceramics were used in this study, namely E-Max(Ivoclar vivadent, Inc, Liechtenstein), Creation ZI(KLEMA Dental produckte GmbH, Austria), Cercon ceram kiss(Degudent, GmbH, Hanau-Wolfgang, Germany), Triceram(Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany), Zirkonzahn(Zirkonzahn GmbH, Italy), Zirmax(Alpadent, korea). All samples were prepared according to the relevant instructions of manufacture. Disc specimens were prepared to the final dimensions of 17 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm in thickness. The biaxial flexure strength test was conducted using a ball-on-three-ball method. All specimens were tested in a moisture-free environment. Average flexural strengths were analyzed with Weibull analysis and one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA). Significant differences were founded between the mean flexural strength values of five commercials zirconia veneering ceramics and the other. The flexural strengths and Weibull modulus were similar to those of five groups E-Max(EM), Creation ZI(CR), Cercon ceram kiss(CE), Triceram(TR), Zirkonzahn(ZI) with the exception of Zirmax(ZM). The biaxial flexural strength from Cercon ceram kiss(CE) was higher than those of other groups. Fracture analysis showed similar results for these five groups.
