In this thesis, centrifuge model experiments and numerical analyses were carried out to investigate the behavior of an excavated slope in soft clay ground. Centrifuge model tests were performed with various slopes for the excavated ground, such as 1:1.5 and 1:2. Pore pressuresthe model ground were measured to find their effects on the stability of the excavated slope. These experiments showed that the model with 1:2.5 maintained its stability within a short period of time and failed gradually. Therefore, anexcavated slope of soft soil with this slope might maintain stable conditions within a certain time. The mode1 with a 1:3 slope was observed to maintain a very stable condition, showing insignificant deformation in the ground after being excavated. Numerical analyses with PLAXIS, a commerciallyavailable software implemented with the finite element numerical technique, were performed to find the pore pressure distribution within the ground mass and the deformation of the soil. From the results of numerical analysis, a negative pore pressure was developed after the excavation and thus the stability of the slope was maintained. The safety factor for slope failure was found to decrease with time because of the dissipation of negative pore pressure with time.
When an anchor penetrates and is installed under a seabed, a portion of the mooring line connected to the anchor is also embedded under the seabed. This embedded mooring line affects the capacity of the anchor in two ways. First, the frictional resistance that occurs between the mooring line and the seabed reduces the pulling force acting on the anchor. Second, the embedded part of the mooring line forms a reverse catenary shape due to the bearing resistance of the soil, so that an inclined pulling force is applied to the anchor. To evaluate the mooring line's effect on the capacity of an anchor in sand, centrifuge model tests were performed using two relative sand densities of 76% and 51% while changing the anchor depths. The test results showed that the load is reduced much more in deep and dense sand, and the inclination angle of the load is lower in shallow and loose sand.
In this study, the centrifuge model tests were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio, the deformation modes of piles and the ground movement in clay deposit improved by SCP and GCP piles with changing the replacement ratio(20%, 40%, 60%) under flexible loading. Based on the results obtained, it was shown that the stresses acting on GCP was larger than those acting on SCP with the same replacement ratio. It was evaluated that the average stress concentration ratio of soft clay ground improved by GCP was slightly larger than that of SCP when the replacement ratio is 40%. Only expansion failure occurred in GCP, whereas SCP showed the expansion and shear failure simultaneously.
This thesis is to investigate the sliding behavior of cantilever retaining wall by using the commercially available program of FLAC to simulate its behavior numerically. Cantilever retaining walls with flat base, sloped base and base with shear key, uniform surcharges being applied on the surface of backfill, were investigated to figure out appropriate location of shear key beneath the base of wall and, thus, its applicability to field condition was assessed by comparing the analyzed results to each other. On the other hand, previously performed centrifuge model test results (Eum, 1996) were analyzed numerically with FLAC to compare test results with respect to characteristics of load-settlement of surcharges and load-lateral movement of wall. Based on the failure mechanism observed during centrifuge tests, limit equilibrium method of finding the ultimate load inducing the sliding failure of wall was used to compare with values of the ultimate load obtained from conventional method of limit equilibrium method. Therefore, appropriate location of shear key was determined to mobilize the maximum resistance against sliding failure of wall.

In general, Korean Lightweight Concrete used Heat insulating material for building and filler for civil construction, backfill material for tunnel, office floor fillers, lightweight blocks and so on. These expand the range of use ALC(autoclaved lightweight concrete) on the soft-ground at regular intervals during road construction by installing piles used as substrates for the process is under study. In this study, behavior characteristics on the soft-ground of pavement analysis was used to test the geo-Centrifuge. Prototype pavement reduced to 1/30 slab form of the composition as kaolinite model tests were conducted in the soft ground. Pile Arrangement (having 36 component pile with an array of $3{\times}12$) was used to group of piles. Tests of gravity 30 level the centrifugal force acting Light-weight pavement models. Based on the Prototype pavement of the behavior characteristics of pavement behavior characteristics were estimated. FMA analysis of the 10 times as big 39.4kg (actual load 35 ton) of the lateral load is applied to the case 7.8mm (actual behavior 23.4mm) behavior was fine.
There are two primary causes of the ground movement due to tunnelling in urban areas; firstly the lost ground and secondly the groundwater depression during construction. The groundwater depression was usually not considered as a cause of settlement in previous research works. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the combined effect of these two phenomena on the transverse settlement trough. Centrifuge model tests and numerical analysis were primarily selected as the methodology. The characteristics of settlement trough were analyzed by performing centrifuge model tests where acceleration reached up to 80g condition. Two different types of tunnel models of 180 mm diameter were prepared in order to match the prototype of a large tunnel of 14.4 m diameter. A volume loss model was made to simulate the excavation procedure at different volume loss and a drainage tunnel model was made to simulate the reduction in pore pressure distribution. Numerical analysis was performed using FLAC 2D program in order to analyze the effects of various groundwater depression values on the settlement trough. Unconfined fluid flow condition was selected to develop the phreatic surface and groundwater level on the surface. The settlement troughs obtained in the results were investigated according to the combined effect of excavation and groundwater depression. Subsequently, a new curve is suggested to consider elastic settlement in the modified Gaussian curve. The results show that the effects of groundwater depression are considerable as the settlement trough gets deeper and wider compared to the trough obtained only due to excavation. The relationships of maximum settlement and infection point with the reduced pore pressure at tunnel centerline are also suggested.

Pseudo-static approach has been conventionally applied for the design of gravity type quay walls. In this method, seismic coefficient ($k_h$), expressed in terms of acceleration due to gravity, is used to convert the real dynamic behavior to an equivalent pseudo-static inertial force for seismic analysis and design. Therefore, the calculation of an appropriate $k_h$ considering frequency characteristics of input earthquake is critical for representing the real dynamic behavior. However, the definitions of $k_h$, which is used for simplified analysis in Korea, focuses only on convenience that is easy to use, and the frequency characteristics of input earthquake are not reflected in the $k_h$ definitions. This paper evaluates the influences of the frequency characteristics of input earthquake on $k_h$ by initially reviewing the $k_h$ definitions in the existing codes of Japan for port structures and then by performing a series of dynamic centrifuge tests on caisson gravity quay walls of different earthquake input motions (Ofunato, Hachinohe). A review of the existing codes and guidelines has shown that the $k_h$ values are differently estimated according to the frequency characteristics of input earthquake. On the other hand, based on the centrifuge tests, it was found that the permanent displacements of wall are more induced when long-period-dominant earthquake is applied.

Recently, a deep mixture method as a soil improvement method of marine soft ground, which causes less noise and vibration than other methods, are widely used. In this study, for DCM(Deep Cement Mixing) method, one of the deep mixture method, optimum mixing ratio of clay-cement was suggested using uniaxial compression tests on specimens with various mixing ratio of claycement. In addition, the stability of a caisson on tangent circle-type and wall-type DCM treated ground was evaluated using centrifuge tests. As a result, optimum mixing ratio of clay-cement was 28.5% and the stability of the caisson on DCM treated ground was confirmed. However, the lateral displacement of the caisson on the wall-type DCM treated ground was 7% less and the settlement of that was 39% less than the case of the tangent-circle-type DCM method.

Rock-socketed drilled shafts are widely used to transfer the heavy loads from the superstructure especially in mountainous area. Extensive research has been done on the behavior of rock-socketed drilled shafts under compressive load. However, little attention has been paid to uplift behavior of drilled shaft in rock, which govern the overall behavior of the foundation system. In this paper, a series of centrifuge tests have been performed to investigate the uplift response of rock-socketed drilled shafts. The pull-out tests of drilled shafts installed in layered rocks having various strengths were conducted. The load-displacement response, axial load distributions in the shaft and the unit skin friction distribution under pull-out loads were investigated. The effects of the strength of rock socket on the initial stiffness, ultimate capacity and mobilization of friction of the foundation, were also examined. The results indicated that characteristics of rock-socket has a significant influence on the uplift behavior of drilled shaft. Most of the applied uplift load were carried by socketed rock when the drilled shaft was installed in the sand over rock layer, whereas substantial load was carried by both upper and lower rock layers when the drilled shaft was completely socketed into layered rock. The pattern of mobilized shaft friction and point where the maximum unit shaft friction occurred were also found to be affected by the socket condition surrounding the drilled shaft.
Accidental anchor drop can cause disturbances to seabed materials and pose significant threats to the safety and serviceability of submarine structures such as pipelines. In this study, a series of anchor drop tests was carried out to investigate the penetration mechanism of a Hall anchor in sand and clay. A special anchor drop apparatus was designed to model the inflight drop of a Hall anchor. Results indicate that Coriolis acceleration was the primary cause of large horizontal offsets in sand, and earth gravity had negligible impact on the lateral movement of dropped anchors. The indued final horizontal offset was shown to increase with the elevated drop height of an anchor, and the existence of water can slow down the landing velocity of an anchor. It is also observed that water conditions had a significant effect on the influence zone caused by anchors. The vertical influence depth was over 5 m, and the influence radius was more than 3 m if the anchor had a drop height of 25 m in dry sand. In comparison, the vertical influence depth and radius reduced to less than 3 m and 2 m, respectively, when the anchor was released from 10 m height and fell into the seabed with a water depth of 15 m. It is also found that the dynamically penetrating anchors could significantly influence the earth pressure in clay. There is a non-linear increase in the measured penetration depth with kinematic energy, and the resulted maximum earth pressure increased dramatically with an increase in kinematic energy. Results from centrifuge model tests in this study provide useful insights into the penetration mechanism of a dropped anchor, which provides valuable data for design and planning of future submarine structures.
