In order to enhance the greenness in the strain-hardening composites and to reduce the high cost of typical polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composite (PVA-ECC), an affordable strain-hardening composite with green binder content has been proposed. For optimizing the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites, this paper investigates the effects of polypropylene fibers on the first cracking strength, fracture properties, and micromechanical parameters of cementitious composites. For this purpose, digital image correlation (DIC) technique was utilized to monitor crack propagation. In addition, to have an in-depth understanding of fiber/matrix interaction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used. To understand the effect of fibers on the strain hardening behavior of cementitious composites, ten mixes were designed with the variables of fiber length and volume. To investigate the micromechanical parameters from fracture tests on notched beam specimens, a novel technique has been suggested. In this regard, mechanical and fracture tests were carried out, and the results have been discussed utilizing both fracture and micromechanical concepts. This study shows that the fiber length and volume have optimal values; therefore, using fibers without considering the optimal values has negative effects on the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites.

This study present the experimental research investigating the influence of material factors such as a type or amount of superplasticizer, velocity agent, mineral admixture and steel fiber on the construction performance of fiber reinforced cementitious composites. As for the test results, it was found that the workability of fiber reinforced cementitious composites can be improved when the material factors were matched properly in amount and composition. Furthermore, it was shown that the smaller value of the aspect ratio of fiber improved the workability of fiber reinforced cementitious composites. And the fiber reinforced cementitious composites with better workability showed the enhanced compressive strength and flexural strength.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate tensile performance of cementitious composites reinforced with steel fiber. The tensile performance of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites is related to the tensile performance of reinforced fiber, and depends on the fracture or pull-out of fiber. Therefore, the tensile performance was compared and analyzed by conducting a direct tensile test on the tensile specimens of cementitious composites reinforced with hook-type steel fiber and amorphous steel fiber.

The purpose of this study is to measure the electrical conductivity of cementitious composites as an early step to obtain shielding performance by mixing various type of steel fiber into cementitious composites, the main building material of protection facility, to shield electromagnetic pulse (EMP) damage. Fiber such as conductors as amorphous metallic fiber, hooked steel fiber, and smooth steel fiber are mixed into cementitious composites to give electrical conductivity and measure the impedance of concrete using LCR meter. By doing this, the electrical conductivity of each type of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) is compared.

In this study, the effect of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the residual strength and impact resistance of high-strength cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures was investigated. A cementitious composites was manufactured in which 0.15 vol% of polypropylene fiber (PP) and 1.0 vol% of smooth steel fiber (SSF) were double-mixed, and a residual strength test was conducted while thermal stress was applied by heating test, and then a high-velocity impact test was performed. In the case of general cementitious composites, the rear surface is damaged due to explosion and low tensile strength during high temperature or impact, while hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites can repeatedly absorb and distribute stress until multiple fibers are damaged to suppress the propagation of impact and resistance to explosion. Therefore, this study analyzed the residual strength of cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures depending on whether hybrid fibers were mixed or not, and collected research data on fracture behavior through high-speed impact tests to evaluate impact resistance and mechanical properties.

The cementitious composites have been developed to satisfy various demands of the construction market. The conductive concrete, which is a carbon-based cementitious composite, was used for the deicing or the detecting the internal crack. The cement-based battery is a technology that applies the basic concept of the alkaline battery to these conductive concretes. The cementitious composites could have a function as batteries, through a mixing of anode and cathode, which were consist of the zinc and manganese dioxide powder. The carbon-based materials, which have a significant effect on electrical properties, could be considered as the main variable in cement-based batteries. Therefore, in this study, the effects of carbon-based materials were investigated. Two types of materials, including the Carbon black and Multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT), were considered as the main variables. From the experiment results, the electrical characteristics such as resistance, voltage, and current were compared according to the age.
The mechanical behavior of Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCC) under direct shear is studied through experiment and analytical simulation. The cementitious composite considered contains 55% replacement of cement with fly ash and 2% (volume ratio) of short discontinuous synthetic fibers (in the form of mass reinforcement, comprising PVA - Polyvinyl Alcohol fibers). This class of cementitious materials exhibits ductility under tension with the formation of multiple fine cracks and significant delay of crack stabilization (i.e., localization of cracking at a single location). One of the behavioral parameters that concern structural design is the shear strength of this new type of fiber reinforced composites. This aspect was studied in the present work with the use of Push-off tests. The shear strength is then compared to the materials' tensile and splitting strength values.
Despite the significant features of fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs), including better mechanical, fractural, and durability performance, their high content of cement has restricted their use in the construction industry. Although ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) is considered the main supplementary cementitious material, its slow pozzolanic reaction stands against its application. The addition of nano-sized mineral modifiers, including nano-silica (NS), is an alternative to address the drawbacks of using GGBFS. The main object of this empirical and numerical research is to examine the effect of NS on the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites; ten mixes were designed, and five levels of NS were considered. This study proposes a new method, using a four-point bending test to assess the use of nano-silica (NS) on the flexural behavior, first cracking strength, fracture energy, and micromechanical parameters including interfacial friction bond strength and maximum bridging stress. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used for monitoring the initiation and propagation of the cracks. In addition, to attain a deep comprehension of fiber/matrix interaction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used. It was discovered that using nano-silica (NS) in cementitious materials results in an enhancement in the matrix toughness, which prevents multiple cracking and, therefore, strain-hardening. In addition, adding NS enhanced the interfacial transition zone between matrix and fiber, leading to a higher interfacial friction bond strength, which helps multiple cracking in the composite due to the hydrophobic nature of polypropylene (PP) fibers. The findings of this research provide insight into finding the optimum percent of NS in which both ductility and high tensile strength of the composites would be satisfied. As a concluding remark, a new criterion is proposed, showing that the optimum value of nano-silica is 2%. The findings and proposed method of this study can facilitate the design and utilization of green cementitious composites in structures.
Application of nanomaterials to cementitious composites has been attempted with the rapid development of nanotechnology since the 1990s. Various nanomaterials such as carbon nanotube, graphene, nano-SiO2, nano-TiO2, nano-Al2O3, nano-Clay, and nano-Magnetite have been applied to cementitious composites to improve the mechanical properties and the durability, and to impart a variety of functionality. In-depth information on the effect of nanomaterials on the hydration reaction, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of cementitious nanocomposites is provided in the present study. Specifically, this paper mostly deals with the previous studies on the heat evolution characteristics of cementitious nanomaterials at an early age of curing, and the pore and the compressive strength characteristics of cementitious nanocomposites. Furthermore, the effect of nanomaterials on the cementitious nanocomposites was systematically discussed with the reviews.
