  • With the recent development in construction industry, industrial by-products fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag(BS) have been used in large quantities as an alternative to cement, as a solution for environmental problems and resource exhaustion. This study analyzed the basic characteristics according to the changes in replacement ratio and mixing ratio of FA and BS in high strength SCMs concrete, from which in turn it sought to find the optimal mixing ratio for high strength concrete The results showed that in unhardened concrete the more the replacement ratio and FA mixing ratio increases the slump flow will increase while amount of air decreases, and setting time is delayed. In hardened concrete the more the replacement ratio and FA mixing ratio increases the more the overall compression strength decreases, but until 28 days of material age the larger of the BS ratio displayed the best compression strength.

  • In this research, the physical properties of self compacting concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag as a part of cement were investigated. Concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag was prepared with various ground granulated blast furnace slag replacement(20~80 volume %) for cement and the quantities of coarse aggregate in concrete were 50%, 55% and 60% of ratio of absolute volume of coarse aggregate. The workability, flowing characteristics, air content and compressive strength of concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag were tested and the results were compared with those of ordinary portland cement concrete. In the experiment, we acquired satisfactory results at the point of flowing characteristics and strengths of concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag within tile replacement ratio of 50% and the optimum quantity of coarse aggregate in concrete was found to be 50%~55% of ratio of absolute volume of coarse aggregate.

  • In this study, the characteristic of strength development of high volume fly ash concrete(HVFAC) was experimentally investigated. The production of one ton of portland cement releases about 0.87ton of CO2 into the atmosphere. HVFAC is an emerging material technology and is environmentally friendly because of its reduced use of portland cement, reduced CO2 emissions. For this purpose, two levels of W/B were selected. Seven levels of fly ash replacement ratios and two levels of silica fume replacement ratios were adopted. In the concrete mix, the water content of 125kg/m3 was used, which is less than that of usual water content. As a result, it was observed that the slump of concrete was increased with the increasing fly ash replacement ratio and when the silica fume was incorporated into the concrete, the slump was significantly decreased at the same condition. It appeared that the compressive strength gradually decreased with increasing fly ash replacement ratio at the early age, but the difference of strength up to replacement ratio of 50% was little at the age of 91 days because of the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash.

  • For the decades, various of materials were used to instead of cement as the high volume CO2 occurred during the process of cement manufacture. In this paper, incineration plant ash was used in the mortar which incorporating high volume of blast furnace slag. Water to binder ratio(W/B) is fixed as 50%,BS+RP's replacement ratio is fixed as 80%,and the replacement ratio of WA1 is range as 0,0.5,1,2,3,4,5%.For the fresh mortar, flow and chloride contents has been tested. For the hardened mortar, compressive strength at 3,7,28 days has been tested. the result shows that when the replacement ratio of WA1 is 0.5%,the chloride contents is less than 0,3 kg/m3,the flowability and strength also performed better than other replacement types of mortar.

  • Waste foundry sand (WFS) is the waste product that cause environmental hazards. WFS can be used as a partial replacement of cement or fine aggregates in concrete. A database comprising 234 compressive strength tests of concrete fabricated with WFS is used. To construct the machine learning-based prediction models, the water-to-cement ratio, WFS replacement percentage, WFS-to-cement content ratio, and fineness modulus of WFS were considered as the model's inputs, and the compressive strength of concrete is set as the model's output. A base extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model together with two hybrid XGBoost models mixed with the tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA) and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) were applied. The role of TSA and SSA is to identify the optimum values of XGBoost hyperparameters to obtain the higher performance. The results of these hybrid techniques were compared with the results of the base XGBoost model in order to investigate and justify the implementation of optimisation algorithms. The results showed that the hybrid XGBoost models are faster and more accurate compared to the base XGBoost technique. The XGBoost-SSA model shows superior performance compared to previously published works in the literature, offering a reduced system error rate. Although the WFS-to-cement ratio is significant, the WFS replacement percentage has a smaller influence on the compressive strength of concrete. To improve the compressive strength of concrete fabricated with WFS, the simultaneous consideration of the water-to-cement ratio and fineness modulus of WFS is recommended.

  • In the recent years, the use of agricultural waste in green cement mortar and concrete production has attracted considerable attention because of potential saving in the large areas of landfills and potential enhancement on the performance of mortar. In this research, microparticles of palm oil fuel ash (POFA) obtained from a multistage thermal and mechanical treatment processes of raw POFA originating from palm oil mill was utilized as a pozzolanic material to produce high-performance cement mortar (HPCM). POFA was used as a partial replacement material to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) at replacement levels of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40% by volume. Sand with particle size smaller than 300 ㎛ was used to enhance the performance of the HPCM. The HPCM mixes were tested for workability, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), porosity and absorption. The results portray that the incorporation of micro POFA in HPCMs led to a slight reduction in the compressive strength. At 40% replacement level, the compressive strength was 87.4 MPa at 28 days which is suitable for many high strength applications. Although adding POFA to the cement mixtures harmed the absorption and porosity, those properties were very low at 3.4% and 11.5% respectively at a 40% POFA replacement ratio and after 28 days of curing. The HPCM mixtures containing POFA exhibited greater increase in strength and UPV as well as greater reduction in absorption and porosity than the control OPC mortar from 7 to 28 days of curing age, as a result of the pozzolanic reaction of POFA. Micro POFA with finely graded sand resulted in a dense and high strength cement mortar due to the pozzolanic reaction and increased packing effect. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the POFA could be used with high replacement ratios as a pozzolanic material to produce HPCM.

  • Preplaced aggregate concrete in the building fields has recently been used in the partial repair works for damaged reinforced concrete structures, and polymer-modified mortars have been employed as grouting mortars for the preplaced aggregate concrete. The objective of this study is to clear the properties of polymer-modified grouting mortars. Polymer-modified mortars using a polystyrene acrylic(St/Ac) emulsion as grouting mortars for preplaced aggregate concrete are prepared with various mix proportions, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, adhesion in tension. The flexural strength of emulsion-modified grouting mortars does not give much variation with increasing fly ash replacement for cement and sand-binder ratio. With increasing polymer-binder ratio, the flexural strength and adhesion in tension of St/Ac emulsion-modified grouting mortars increases, become nearly constant or reaches a maximum at a polymer-binder ratio of 5%. From the test results, St/Ac emulsion-modified grouting mortar with a polymer-binder ratio of 5%, a fly ash replacement of 10% for cement and sand-binder ratio of 1.0 is recommended as a grouting mortar for preplaced aggregate concrete.
