Cellulosic alcohol fermentation has recently gained more attention in the production of ethanol, butanol, and 2,3-butanediol. However, it was revealed that the process had several hurdles, such as, an expensive cost for biomass decomposition to yield fermentable sugars and a production of byproduct lignin. As an alternative for the process through biomass saccharification, the alcohol production through syngas from biomass has been studied. In this study, we reviewed acetogen and its central metabolic pathway, Wood-Ljungdahl route, capable of utilizing syngas. Furthermore, the metabolic engineering strategies of acetogen for bio-alcohol production from syngas was also reviewed with a brief perspective.

Sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L)] is one of the major crops for biofuels such as sugarcane and sugar beet which raw materials rich in saccharide. Sweet sorghum juice was extracted from the stem. It's composed of fermentable sugars such as glucose, fructose and sucrose. Ethanol from the extracted sweet sorghum juice can be easily produced by yeast fermentation process. Sweet sorghum juice is consisted of not only sugars but also various nutrients like nitrogen and phosphate. For commercial production of bioethanol, seed culture is one of the important parts of fermentation, so that optimal culture medium should be selected for the reduction of processing costs. In this study, sweet sorghum juice was estimated as a culture medium for seed culture of cellulosic bioethanol. For the comparison of cultures with various substrates, it used YPD including each 5 g/L yeast extract and peptone, sweet sorghum juice and hydrolyzed Miscanthus was taken part in the culture with 2%, 5% and 10% sugar conditions. Based on media of YPD and sweet sorghum juice, cell-mass concentration was obtained maximum more than $2.5{\times}10^8CFU/mL$ after 24 h of cultivation. Consequently sweet sorghum juice is suitable for the cell culture with more than $1.0{\times}10^8CFU/mL$ after 12 h of cultivation. This can be used as a culture medium for the cellulosic bioethanol industry.

The production of bioethanol, which is one of the alternative fuel, cause the various problem such as agflation in human society. As a substitute for the feedstock, lignocellulosic biomass have a big potential. However, bioethanol production with cellulosic material is not commercialized due to high cost. Thermochemical pretreatment to improve the rate of enzyme hydrolysis and increase the recovery of fermentable sugar, is required in order to achieve the cost down in bioethanol production. In this study, various problems and technologies for pretreatment is introduced. Acid hydrolysis, alkali hydrolysis, steam explosion, organosolv process, ammonia explosion, and wet oxidation pretreatment remove lignin and hemicellulose, and reduce cellulose crystallinity. Optimization of pretreatment process on various sources of lignocellulosic biomass such as softwood, hardwood, and straw should be performed.

The purposes of this study are to prepare Hanji fiber-filter sheets using replacement liquid in water-swollen fiber with non-polar solvent such as ethanol, methanol and pentane. The experiments were studied on the selection of optimal non-polar solvent and the optimal drying method for wetted fiber and then were to know physicochemical characteristics of prepared Hanji fiber-filter sheet. The Ethanol as liquid changer in water-swollen fiber was excellent solvent and the optimal drying method for them was freeze drying served with vacuum pump. The bulk density and porosity of prepared fiber sheet from freeze dryer were 0.11-0.13 g/mL, half of natural dried fiber sheet, and 90%, respectively. The results of SEM observation for the fiber sheet prepared with natural drying or heating drying were shown very close structure of fiber wall in dry state. However, the freeze drying sheet were shown the open structure. So, the head loss of freeze drying sheet was very lower than natural drying and heating drying sheets. From the results of BTEX removal experiments, the sheets dried at water wetted condition was shown more higher efficiency than the fiber sheets dried at solvent wetted condition.
Two-step pretreatment process was investigated to efficiently hydrolyzed rape stems for obtaining fermentable sugars. The process was consisted of two consecutive steps as $200^{\circ}C$ and 15 MPa and $374^{\circ}C$ and 24 MPa with the flow rate of 5 mL/min. Under this condition, 5.5 (g/L) of glucose and 25.6 (g/L) of xylose were obtained from rape stems, showing 18% of glucose yield based on 25% cellulose in the rape stems. It was also found that this process could generate less amounts of toxic residues, such as HMF (Hydroxy- Methyl-Furfural) and other fulfural components during hydrolysis process. It could reaction maintain relatively high ethanol production yield as 90% of theoretical conversion yield from glucose. Therefore, this pretreatment process could be applied to hydrolyze other cellulosic and marine resources such as woods, stem and algae for bioethanol production.
In order to suggest correct direction of researches on Miscanthus spp. which are promising bioenergy crop, authors had reviewed and summarized various literature about botanical taxonomy, morphology and present condition of breeding, cultivation and utilization of miscanthus. Among the genus of Miscanthus which are known 17 species, the most important species are M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus which origin are East Asia including Korea, and M. x giganteus which is inter-specific hybrid of tetraploid M. sacchariflorus and diploid M. sinensis. Miscanthus is superior to other energy crops in resistance to poor environments including cold, saline and damp soil, nitrogen utilization efficiency, budget of input energy and carbon which are required for producing biomass and output which are stored in biomass. The major species for production of energy and industrial products including construction material in Europe, USA and Canada is M. x giganteus which was introduced from Japan in 1930s. In present, many breeding programs are conducted to supplement demerits of present varieties and to develop "Miscanes" which is hybrid of miscanthus and sugar cane. In Korea, the researches on breeding and cultivation of miscanthus were initiated in 2007 by collecting germplasms, and developed "Goedae-Uksae 1" which is high biomass yield and "mass propagation method of miscanthus" which can improve propagation efficiency in 2009. In order to develop "Korean miscanthus industry" in future, the superior varieties available not only domestic but also foreign market should be developed by new breeding method including molecular markers. Researches on production process of cellulosic bio-ethanol including pre-treatment and saccharification of miscanthus biomass also should be strengthen.

We investigated the changes of fruit quality parameters, polysaccharide contents and cell wall components during maturation and ripening of two Korean pear cultivar 'Hanareum' and 'Manpungbae' compared with 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) which showed different physiological maturity based on days after full bloom (DAFB). Flesh firmness decreased continuously with fruit development and maturation, reaching a final level of 29.4, 33.5, and 27.4N at maturity in 'Hanareum' (127 DAFB), 'Manpungbae' (163 DAFB), and 'Niitaka' (170 DAFB), respectively. The level of ethylene production was very low in early season 'Hanareum' pear which showed at most 0.39 ${\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at maturity and no ethylene was detected in 'Manpungbae' and 'Niitaka' at maturity. Fructose was the most abundant soluble sugar during fruit maturation in the pears tested and an increase of sucrose was observed during fruit ripening in the Asian pears commonly. Ethanol insoluble solids (EIS) content decreased gradually with different levels among the pear cultivars as fruit ripens consisted of 10.79, 12.72, and 12.75 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ FW. The amount of total soluble polyuronides was higher in early season cultivars 'Hanareum' than those of mid-season cultivar 'Manpungbae' and 'Niitaka'. In 'Niitaka' which harvested most late season, the level of 4% KOH soluble hemicelluloses was lower than 'Hanareum' and 'Manpungbae' and maintained constantly during fruit ripening period. Cellulosic residues were determined high level in 'Niitaka' which showed 612.33 ${\mu}g{\cdot}mg^{-1}$ EIS at maturity when compared with 'Hanareum' (408.0 ${\mu}g{\cdot}mg^{-1}$ EIS) and 'Manpungbae' (538.67 ${\mu}g{\cdot}mg^{-1}$ EIS). The main constituents of cell wall neutral sugars which consisted of arabinose, xylose, galactose, and glucose were decreased gradually with onset of fruit ripening regardless of cultivar. Arabinose which was predominant in 'Hanareum' pear decreased at the last stage of ripening, but the changes of cell wall neutral sugar during ripening were not occurred in 'Niitaka' pear. The change of molecular mass distribution in water soluble pectin observed dominantly at the early stage of fruit development. Depolymerization of 4% KOH-soluble hemicelluloses and degradation of xyloglucan showed in early-season cultivar 'Hanareum' during fruit maturation, and degradation of those fractions were detected only at the early stage fruit development in mid-season cultivar 'Manpungbae' and 'Niitaka'. The molecular mass profile of CDTA soluble pectin, $Na_2CO_3$-SP and 24% KOH soluble hemicelluloses showed no significant change during fruit maturation regardless of cultivar.
