Sand pile is one of the widely used ground improvement methods. Sand pile improved ground will have composite ground effects, even though the primary purpose is the accelerated consolidation. However, the consolidation of sand pile improved ground as a composite ground is substantially under developed. This study investigate the effect of composite ground for relatively low volume displacement sand piles. Plate bearing tests and earth pressure cell measurements are performed. It turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However the bearing capacity of the surrounding clayey soil is increased by sixty percent, and it cause the stiffness change during consolidation. Therefore it is expected that, the effect of increased stiffness of sand pile improved ground is influenced by change of ground stiffness.

Open-cell silicon foam is difficult to cut using conventional machining processes because of its low stiffness. That is, open-cell silicon foam is easily pressed down when the tool is engaged, which makes it difficult to remove the material in the form of chip. This study proposes an advanced method of machining open-cell silicon foam by freezing the material using liquid nitrogen. Furthermore, the machining conditions are optimized to maximize the efficiency of material removal and minimize the usage of liquid nitrogen by conducting experiments under various machining conditions. The results show that open-cell silicone foam products with free surface can be successfully machined by employing the proposed method.

Cementation phenomenon has a huge influence on geotechnical stiffness and strength under low confining pressure. The goal of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of stiffness according to the depth. The piezo disk elements are installed at each layer of the cell for the detection of the compressional waves. The change of compressional wave velocity is classified by three stages. The compressional wave velocities are shown different according to the depth. The compressional wave velocity is especially influenced by cementation, effective stress, and coordinate number. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity and cone tip resistance are measured according to the depth. The electrical conductivity and the cone tip resistance show the similar trend with the compressional wave velocity. This study shows that the cementation by salt is affected by the depth on the granular materials.

Honeycomb sandwich composite structures have been widely used in aircraft and military industry because of light weight and high stiffness. Accurate mechanical properties of honeycomb materials are needed for analysis of sandwich composites. In this study, theoretical formula for elastic modulus of honeycomb materials was established considering bending and axial deformations of their walls. Finite-element analysis results were compared with theoretical ones of the longitudinal and transverse moduli of honeycomb materials. Consequently, the mechanical properties of honeycomb materials could be analytically predicted.

Purpose: To describle clinical features and enzyme activity of Vietnamese patients with Mucolipidosis type II. Methods: Clinical features, laboratory and plasma lysosom enzyme activity by 4 MU-Fluorometric assay was studied from 2014-2015 at the Northern referral center of Pediatrics - National Children's Hospital. Results: 16 cases (7 girls and 9 boys) were diagnosed with I-cell bases on clinical symptoms and enzyme activities studies. Diagnosis age was $5.93{\pm}4.28$ years, onset age was recognised from birth to 4 years (median 1.25) with the feature of joint stiffness and bone deformation. All cases presented with the feature of joint stiffness, chest deformation and kyphoscoliosis; Fifteen cases (93.7%) had coarse facial features. No patients had hepatosplenomegaly on abdominal ultrasound, 5/15 patients had heart valves disease. Enzyme assay showed ${\alpha}$-Hexosaminidase of $1,885.9{\pm}338.7$ (nmol/mg plasma/17 hrs), ${\alpha}$-Iduronate sulfatase of $4,534.8{\pm}1,062.9nmol/mg$ plasma/4 hrs). Conclusion: Mucolipidosis II seriously affected the life of the patients with skeletal deformities, contractures develop in all joints and cardiac involvement.

Mechanical property of tissue is closely related to diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and atherosclerosis. Therefore measurement of tissue mechanical property is important for a better diagnosis. Ultrasound elastography has been developed as a diagnostic modality for a number of diseases that maps mechanical property of tissue. Optical coherence elastography (OCE) has a higher spatial resolution than ultrasound elastography. OCE, therefore, could be a great help for early diagnosis. In this study, we made tissue phantoms and measured their compressive moduli with a rheometer measuring the response to applied force. Uniaxial strain of the tissue phantom was also measured with OCE by using cross-correlation of speckles and compared with the results from the rheometer. In order to compare stiffness of tissue phantoms by OCE, the applied force should be measured in addition to the strain. We, however, did not use a load cell that directly measures the applied force for each sample. Instead, we utilized one silicone film (called as reference phantom) for all OCE measurements that indirectly indicated the amount of the applied force by deformation. Therefore, all measurements were based on displacement, which was natural and effective for image-based elastography such as OCE.

Possessing of carbon nanotubes in biopolymer intrigued much interest due to their mechanical and unique nanoscale surface properties. Surface stiffness can be controlled by the amount of carbon nanotubes in polymer and surface wettability can be altered by the order of nanoscale surface roughness. Protein adsorption mechanism on nanostructured carbon nanotube/polymer thin film will be discussed in this study. In addition, we identified that mechanical stimuli also contribute the messenchymal stem cell and bone cell interactions. Importantly, live cell analysis system also showed altered morphology and cellular functions. Thus, embedding of carbon nanostructures simultaneously contribute to protein adsorption and cellular interactions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the evidence that nanoscale surface features determine the subsequent biological interactions, such as protein adsorption and cellular interactions.
Objectives: This study compared the mechanical properties of various instruments for canal exploration and glide-path preparations. Materials and Methods: The buckling resistance, bending stiffness, ultimate torsional strength, and fracture angle under torsional load were compared for C+ file (CP, Dentsply Maillefer), M access K-file (MA, Dentsply Maillefer), Mani K-file (MN, Mani), and NiTiFlex K-file (NT, Dentsply Maillefer). The files of ISO size #15 and a shaft length of 25 mm were selected. For measuring buckling resistance (n = 10), the files were loaded in the axial direction of the shaft, and the maximum load was measured during the files' deflection. The files (n = 10) were fixed at 3 mm from the tip and then bent $45^{\circ}$ with respect to their long axis, while the bending force was recorded by a load cell. For measuring the torsional properties, the files (n = 10) were also fixed at 3 mm, and clockwise rotations (2 rpm) were applied to the files in a straight state. The torsional load and the distortion angle were recorded until the files succumbed to the torque. Results: The CP was shown to require the highest load to buckle and bend the files, and the NT showed the least. While MA and MN showed similar buckling resistances, MN showed higher bending stiffness than MA. The NT had the lowest bending stiffness and ultimate torsional strength (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The tested instruments showed different mechanical properties depending on the evaluated parameters. CP and NT files were revealed to be the stiffest and the most flexible instruments, respectively.

In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

A comprehensive study has been made for the investigation of the convergence and stability characteristics of the LU scheme for solving the Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured meshes. For this purpose the characteristics of the LU scheme was initially studied for a scalar model equation. Then the analysis was extended to the Navier-Stokes equations. It was shown that the LU scheme has an inherent stiffness in the streamwise direction. This stiffness increases when the grid aspect ratio becomes high and the cell Reynolds number becomes small. It was also shown that the stiffness related to the grid aspect ratio can be effectively eliminated by performing proper subiteration. The results were validated for a flat-plate turbulent flow.
