SiO 기판에 이온빔 조사를 통해서 제조한 IPS Cell의 특성에 관한 연구 (IPS property using ion beam irradiation on SiOF surfaces)

  • 최근 비접촉식 액정배향방법에 대한 요구가 산업계 전반으로 확산되면서, 기존의 UV 광배향을 비롯하여, 여러 가지 비접촉식 액정 배향방법이 활발히 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 비접촉식 액정배향방법 중에서 SiOF 무기막에 이온빔을 정량적으로 조사하는 방법을 사용하여 액정을 배향하고, 이 기술을 사용하여, 상용화 수준의 IPS(In-Plane Switching) 방식의 액정 셀을 제작함으로써 전기광학 특성을 평가하였다. 특히 이러한 무기막 배향의 경우 배향안정성에 많은 문제를 가지고 있는 것이 보통이나, 본 연구에서 제안한 방법으로 제조된 평가셀은 $200^{\circ}C$의 높은 온도로 열처리를 하여도 배향성을 잃지 않고 균일한 배향을 지속하는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다.

  • We investigated the EO performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. LC alignment using UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. An good EO characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface. Therefore, the EO property of the UV-aligned TN-LCD with UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface.

Prediction of subcellular localization of proteins using pairwise sequence alignment and support vector machine

  • Predicting the destination of a protein in a cell gives valuable information for annotating the function of the protein. Recent technological breakthroughs have led us to develop more accurate methods for predicting the subcellular localization of proteins. The most important factor in determining the accuracy of these methods, is a way of extracting useful features from protein sequences. We propose a new method for extracting appropriate features only from the sequence data by computing pairwise sequence alignment scores. As a classifier, support vector machine (SVM) is used. The overall prediction accuracy evaluated by the jackknife validation technique reach 94.70% for the eukaryotic non-plant data set and 92.10% for the eukaryotic plant data set, which show the highest prediction accuracy among methods reported so far with such data sets. Our numerical experimental results confirm that our feature extraction method based on pairwise sequence alignment, is useful for this classification problem.

VA Mode의 LCOS에서 Cell Gap의 변화에 따른 전기광학적 특성 (Electro-optical Characteristics of VA mode LCOS depending on Cell Gap)

  • The electro-optical characteristics of the Liquid Crystal on Silicon (hereinafter "LCOS") micro-display on vertically alignment (VA) mode were studied depending on various cell gaps. 5 different cell gaps, such as $1.4{\mu}m,\;1.8{\mu}m,\;2.1{\mu}m,\;2.4{\mu}m$ and $2.8{\mu}m$, were selected. The reflectance-voltage (R-V) characteristics, distributions of reflected light and reflectance were calculated with 3-dimmensional LC code. At the center of cell, the smallest $1.4{\mu}m$ cell gap showed the lowest reflectance and the largest $2.8{\mu}m$ cell gap showed the highest reflectance due to the surface anchoring effect. In case of $2.1{\mu}m$ cell gap, the sum of reflectance overall cell was the highest value. Considering the reflectance and RV curve characteristic, the optimized cell gap was $2.1{\mu}m$.

A Geometric Structure for Uniform Bend Transition in a pi cell

  • A novel geometric solution for uniform bend transition in a pi cell has proposed. In order to obtain the uniform bend transition, we applied hybrid domain structure to the edge of a LC cell by using ion-beam alignment method. As a result, we confirmed that the uniform bend transition has arisen from the edge to the center. From the proposed structure, we expect that the reliable and uniform bend transition can be achieved in the pi cell.

  • We synthesized photoalignment material of high thermal resistance with hydroxyl aromatic polyimide, and studied the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer layers. Also, electro-optical (EO) performances for the twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) photoaligned with linearly polarized UV exposure were investigated. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the photopolymer surface can be obtained. However, the low pretilt angles were obtained below $1^{\circ}$. The Voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve without backflow bounce in the photoaligned TN cell with UV exposure was observed. The response time of photoaligned TN cell was measured about 24 ms. Finally, The photoaligned TN cell has few hysteresis, and shows the residual DC voltage that is less.

조사연료봉 봉단마개의 레이저용접기술 (Technology of the End Cap Laser Welding for Irradiation Fuel Rods)

  • Various welding methods such as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding(GTAW), magnetic force electrical resistance welding and Laser Beam Welding(LBW) are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel rods. Even though the resistance and GTA welding processes are widely used in manufacturing commercial fuel rods, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of fuel rods in the hot cell Facility due to the complexity of the electrode alignment, the difficulty in replacing parts in a remote manner and the large heat input for the thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for the end cap welding of irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell. The remote laser welding apparatus in the hot cell Facility was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with an optical fiber transmission. The weldment quality such as microstructure and mechanical strength was satisfactory. The optimum conditions of laser welding for encapsulating irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell were obtained.

Basic Principle for Determining Azimuthal Anchoring Strength by using HAN/TN Two Domain Liquid Crystal Cell

  • We propose a novel technique for evaluating the azimuthal anchoring strength of the alignment film on the nematic liquid crystal (LC). In our evaluation, a unique cell, which has two domain in one cell, was used; one is hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) region, the other is twsited nematic (TN) region (viz. HAN/TN two domain cell). From the comparison of director angles on the front substrate with each region, we are able to determine the angle between easy axis and real director axis on the front substrate. From this evaluation, the azimuthal anchoring strength was obtained accurately.

Effect of the Electrode Edge on the Viewing Angle Property of a Patterned Vertical Alignment Liquid Crystal Cell

  • This paper investigates the effect of the electrode edge of a patterned vertical alignment (PVA) liquid crystal (LC) device on the viewing angle characteristics. In general, a transmissive LCD applies an LC layer with half-wave retardation for a bright state and with zero retardation for a dark state. The retardation of the LC layer would be distorted in each point, however, when a voltage is applied because of the non-uniform voltage distribution in the electrode edge effect. In this paper, the feasibility of the full effect of the electrode edge on the viewing angle property is considered, and the optical viewing angles of the VA LCD with a uniform half-wave LC layer and the PVA LCD with a practical non-uniform LC layer are compared.

A New Method for Measuring Azimuthal Anchoring Energy of Rubbed and UV-Exposed Polyimide Alignment Layers

  • Novel optical measurement systems and improved cell configurations for measuring of azimuthal anchoring energies were developed. The difference between the mechanical rubbing direction and the optical easy axis that caused errors in the previous azimuthal anchoring energy measurement was compensated. In addition, the measurement accuracy of the twist angle and therefore the azimuthal anchoring energy was greatly enhanced. As a result, we were able to obtain valid azimuthal anchoring energy values for different alignment layers.
