Here we report a photo polymerization-induced hybrid alignment of a nematic liquid crystal cell which can be applied for a roll to roll fabrication process. Predominant polymerization in the vicinity of UV incident front induced a diffusion of monomers toward front slide and anisotropic polymer network was formed parallel to the polarization direction of the UV light. This induced planar alignment of liquid crystals at the front slide. Simultaneously, homeotropic alignment was induced at the bottom slide as the polymers are phase-separated from a bottom slide.

We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The NLC pretilt angles generated are about $3^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle are at about $1.7^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Also, EO characteristics of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer are almost the same as that of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on glass. However, the transmittances of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer is less than that with a rubbed PI surface based on glass.

In this study, we investigated liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) that non contact alignment technique on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide under various ion beam angles. In this experiment, polyimide layer was coated on glass by spin-coating and Voltage-transmittance(VT) and response time characteristics of the TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system. The good characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposured polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN cell on polyimide surface.
We propose an optical configuration for a vertical alignment (VA) liquid crystal (LC) cell to eliminate the off-axis light leakage in the dark state. The proposed compensation configuration consists of a positive A-film, a positive C-film and a negative C-film. The optical design is performed on a Poincar$\acute{e}$ sphere. This configuration has a better tolerance to the wavelength dispersion, as the polarization trace could self-compensate it. From calculations, we show that the proposed VA LC cell can improve the viewing angle characteristics by compensating for the light leakage in the diagonal direction.

A novel nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell with splay structure exhibiting wide viewing angle, fast response time and high transmittance at the same time has been developed. With rubbed homeotropic alignment in parallel directions, the device shows bend alignment in the absence of vertical electric field. However, with applied high voltage in a pulse form, the LC shows a optically compensated splay (OCS) orientation such that the mid-director is parallel to a substrate and at both surfaces the LCs are aligned vertically in parallel direction. In the device, the birefringence of the cell becomes tunable with applying voltage, i.e., the amount of light passed through the cell can be controlled by controlling the orientation of the LC. Since the OCS cell has a self-compensation structure such that the LC has a mirror symmetry along the mid-director, the device shows a wide viewing angle with only a single domain and a fast response time.
We propose a novel way for enhancement of efficiency on a quasi solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). It contained gel type electrolyte mixing the liquid crystal (LC) of specific concentration and applied voltage for alignment of the LC. Aligned LC is supported charge transfer inside electrolyte and efficiency is increased in DSSC. We made a quasi solid-state DSSC which applied DC voltage or not and have measured the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the fill factor. From measurement, we obtain high performances in case of cell applied voltage compare to reference cell.

We studied the viewing angle characteristics of a negative dielectric anisotropy nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the new vertical-alignment (VA)-1/6 cell on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. Good voltage-transmittance (V-T)characteristics using the new VA-1/6 cell without a negative compensation film were obtained. The iso-viewing angle characteristics using the new VA-1/6 cell without the negative compensation film can be achieved.
The fabrication of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels involves several thermal processes such as imidization of the alignment layer (AL) and annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL. The nature of these processes on the LC alignment, especially on the pretilt angle (Θ$\_$p/) has been systematically studied, employing various types of polyimide structures. The imidization effect depends on the nature of polyimid precursors; Θ$\^$p/ increases with the degree of the imidization for the main-chain type of ALs, due to the decrease in the surface polarity, but this relation is not applicable to the alkylated ones in which the steric effect at the AL surface by the aliphatic side chains is dominant. Annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL deteriorates its rubbing-induced molecular orientation and subsequently the overlying LC alignment, resulting in the decrease in Θ$\_$p/. Especially, annealing of the LC cell affects the LC-AL interaction as well as the AL orientation and thus its effect on LC alignment depends sensitively on the nature of LC-polyimide interface; aromatic moiety in the polyimide structure gives better thermal stability of LC alignment while fluorinated polyimide ALs induce the less stable alignment.

Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) has been used for the alignment of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) molecules and the surface morphology of the resulting polymeric thin film has been observed by atomic forced microscope. The uniform alignment of FLC molecules on the surface of thermotropic LCP thin film was obtained even though microgroove structures were not formed. The contrast ratio of sample cell was about 23:1 including two polarizers and a good memory capability due to the bistability of FLC was obtained. After AC field stabilization at 20V, the typical stripe-shaped patterns appeared.

This paper proposes theorthogonal reference vectors selection method of the subspace interference alignment. The proposed method selects multiple orthogonal reference vectors instead of using one reference vector for all users at the same time. The proposed scheme selects a reference vector which maximizes a sum-rate for a certain cell, generates orthogonal vectors to the previous selected vector and selects the one of orthogonal vectors whose sum rate is maximized for each cell. Larger channel gain and sum-rate than the previous method can be obtained by selection degree of freedom. The computer simulation demonstrates the proposed method gives higher sum-rate compared with that of the previous reference vector selection method.
