  • In this paper, a cavity-backed high gain dual band microstrip antenna with Frequency Selective Surface space(FSS) for WLAN is proposed. The proposed antenna that operates in IEEE 802.11a/b bands with similar radiation pattern and gain is fabricated on RO4003 substrate with a dielectric constant of 3.38. The size of the antenna is $71.5{\times}42.0{\times}6.6\;mm^3$, and the FSS size is $120.0{\times}120.02\;mm^3$. The ground plane size including cavity is $150.0{\times}145.0\;mm^3$. The antenna is fed by coaxial cable. The simulated bandwidths of the antenna are 2.369~2.517 GHz and 5.608~5.833 GHz for VSWR<2. The gains are 11.23 dBi and 12.60 dBi, respectively, for the lower and upper bands.

  • In spite of the advantages of lightweight, low profile, and mass productions, microstrip array antenna has inherently the scan blindness problems in case of wide angle scan. And this scan blindness can be overcome by using cavity-backed microstrip radiator. In this paper, we presented the algorithm of analyzing skewed cavity-backed microstrip array and verified the validity of the proposed numerical results with those of reference papers. Finally, we show the effect of cavity-backed and skewed grid array structure.

  • This paper presents the basic characteristics of a cutoff cavity-backed aperture antenna with a feed post and a parasitic post inserted parallel to the aperture. It is shown that this type of antenna forcibly resonates the cutoff cavity by adding a single external reactance to the parasitic post. The Galerkin's method of moments is used to analyze integral equations for the unknown electric current on each post and the aperture electric field on the aperture. The value of an external reactance for forced resonance is analytically obtained by deriving a determining equation. Also the current distribution on each post, aperture electric field distributions, and the radiation patterns are discussed. The theoretical analysis is verified by the measured return loss and radiation patterns.

  • In this paper, the design of a 0.5~2 GHz cavity-backed spiral antenna is described. Combined arm pattern with a log spiral in the inner region and an Archimedean spiral in the outer region, a backing cavity, and a Marchand coaxial balun for feeding are designed. Termination resistors are used to improve antenna characteristics at the lower frequency of the operation frequency. VSWR, axial ratio, gain and HPBW(Half Power Beam Width) characteristics are simulated using CST's MWS. Finally, the validity of these approaches is verified by comparing the simulated results with the measured ones. Also, the measurement results are compared with the performance of a commercial spiral antenna.

  • In this paper, a high gain microstrip antenna with rectangular cavity backed is designed. A single microstrip patch is basically a low gain radiator As a ga in enhancement method, superstrate loading techniques are applied to the $2\times2$ microstrip array antenna with cavity backed. In antenna design, although the broadside gain increases as the cavity is enlarged, a cavity size of $3\times3$ wavelength is sufficient. The distance between the radiating elements is chosen as 1.5 free-space wavelength. The antenna radiation characteristics are calculated by IE3D software and compared with the experimental results. Experimental results show that the maximum gain is 18.6dBi at the frequency of 9.16GHz, which is good agreement with the calculations.

  • In this paper, a TRS band(Trunked Radio System: $806{\sim}866\;MHz$) array antenna has a good front-to-back ratio characteristics for the mobile communication base station is proposed. The proposed array antenna is composed of the $5{\times}3$ radiated elements which are the microstrip dipole antennas with the cavity-backed reflector. For the validity of the proposed antenna, the $5{\times}3$ array antenna is designed, fabricated, and its radiation characteristics are measured. As a result of measurements, the antenna gain is over 13.3 dBi and the front-to-back ratio is over 40 dB at the useable frequency band. We confirm that the designed antenna can be used as the mobile communication base station antenna with the excellent back lobe characteristics.

  • In this paper, we present a circularly polarized (CP) composite cavity-backed crossed dipole antenna for global positioning system (GPS) applications. We produce the CP radiation by crossing two dipoles through a $90^{\circ}$ phase delay line of a vacant-quarter printed ring, which also has a broadband impedance matching characteristic. Two techniques, insertion of meander lines in the dipole arm and arrowhead-shaped trace at its end, are employed to reduce the sizes of the primary radiation element. The compact radiator is backed by a cavity reflector to achieve a wide CP radiation beamwidth. The proposed antenna exhibits a measured bandwidth of 1.450~1.656 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) < 2 and 1.555~1.605 GHz for AR < 3-dB. At 1.575 GHz, the antenna has a gain of 7 dBic, a frontto-back ratio of 27 dB, AR of 1.18 dB, and 3-dB AR beamwidths of $130^{\circ}$ and $132^{\circ}$ in the x-z and y-z planes, respectively.

  • The analysis of cavity-backed circular microstrip antenna is performed, based on the method of moments, and verified with experimental results. The proposed algorithm was used to analyze the return loss and radiation characteristics of antenna by the variation of each associated parameter. This result was used to provide the optimum design guideline. Finally active reflection coefficient of infinite cavity-backed microstrip away was calculated to show the effect of suppressing surface wave to eliminate scan blindness.

  • In this paper, design of a $2{\sim}18$ GHz wideband cavity-backed spiral antenna is investigated. Firstly, an arm pattern and a backing cavity of a cavity-backed spiral antenna are designed based on the design theory of an Archimedean spiral antenna as well as by using CST's MWS. VSWR, axial ratio, and HPBW(Half Power Beam Width) characteristics are considered in the simulation. Secondly, a Marchand coaxial balun is designed to meet the required VSWR within the frequency band of operation. Finally, the validity of these approaches is verified by comparing the simulated results with measured ones.
