Alternate blade cavitation, rotating cavitation and cavitation surge in rocket turbopump inducers were simulated by a three dimensional commercial CFD code. In order to clarify the cause of cavitation instabilities, the velocity disturbance caused by cavitation was obtained by subtracting the velocity vector under non-cavitating condition from that under cavitating condition. It was found that there exists a disturbance flow towards the trailing edge of the tip cavity. This flow has an axial flow component towards downstream which reduces the incidence angle to the next blade. It was found that all of the cavitation instabilities start to occur when this flow starts to interact with the leading edge of the next blade. The existence of the disturbance flow was validated by experiments.
In the present study, a practical method to predict cavitation erosion, which caused a critical damage on hydraulic machineries, was developed. Impact and critical velocities were defined to develop a practical method for the prediction of cavitation erosion. To develope the practical method, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was introduced. Cavitating flows with erosion in a converging-diverging nozzle and around a hydrofoil were simulated by developed and validated code. Based on the CFD results, the cavitation erosion coefficient was derived by a curve fitting method. The cavitation erosion coefficient was formulated as the function of the cavitation and Reynolds numbers. A cavitating flow in an axisymmetric nozzle followed by radial divergence was simulated to validate the developed practical method. For the application to a propeller, a cavitating flow around a propeller was simulated. Predicted damage extent showed similar with damaged full-scale propeller blade.
The purpose of this study is to understand the cavitation phenomena in centrifugal pumps through computational fluid dynamics method. NPSH characteristic curve is measured from different flow operating conditions. Steady state, liquid-vapor homogeneous method with two equations transport turbulence model is employed to estimate the NPSH curve in centrifugal pumps. The Rayleigh-Plesset cavitation model is adapted as source term for inter-phase mass transfer in order to understand cavitation phenomena in centrifugal pumps. The cavitation incipient curve is clearly estimated at different flows operating conditions. A relationship is made between cavitation incipient and NPSH curve. Also the effects on water vapor volume fraction and pressure load distributions on the impeller blade are also described.

For a certain operating point of a horizontal shaft bulb turbine (i.e. volume flow, net head, blade angle, guide vane angle) the efficiency for different pressure levels (i.e. different Thoma-coefficient ${\sigma}$) is calculated using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD-)-code including two-phase flow and a cavitation model. The results are compared with experimental results achieved at a closed loop test rig for model turbines. The comparison of the experimentally and numerically obtained efficiency and the visual impression of the cavitation show a good agreement. Especially the drop in efficiency is calculated with satisfying accuracy. This drop in efficiency in combination with the visual impression is of high practical importance since it contributes to determine the admissible cavitation in a bulb-turbine. It is seen that the incipient cavitation in Kaplan type turbines has no major importance in determing this admissible amount of cavitation.
Valve is widely used in the various industry areas to adjust and control the flow. Cavitation frequently takes place and sometimes is inevitable in various types of valve to cause the erosion damage. Therefore, how to control and minimize the effect of cavitation is still an important topic. This study numerically investigates the cavitating flow in a control valve with a perforated cage. The effects of some parameters on the cavitation are discussed. It also discusses to use the throttling steps to govern the cavitating flow. The results show that the opening degree of valve and the length of downstream divergent connection both influence the cavitation. The increase of the divergent length reinforces the cavitation. And the larger the opening of valve is, the intenser the cavitation is and the more vapor is present. The more throttling steps are helpful to decrease the cavitation.
In this study, the noise characteristics of the propeller tip vortex cavitation and its inception were analyzed experimentally. Generally, tip vortex cavitation is the first appeared cavity that occurs in a propeller. If propeller tip vortex cavitation is appeared, the level and characteristics of underwater radiated noise changes dramatically compared with the non-cavitating propeller. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the noise characteristics of the propeller cavitation and to detect the cavitation inception in the development of the propulsion system for military vessel and underwater weapon system. The change of noise characteristics due to the inception and growth of the propeller tip vortex cavitation was analyzed. Various imaging-noise measurement and analysis technique were used to determine the inception of propeller cavitation.
Turbopumps for liquid rocket engines are exposed to various cavitation instabilities under their operating conditions. The instabilities affect the stability of the turbopumps. To make sure of the stability of the turbopump of KSLV-II, the present work examined the characteristics of the cavitation instabilities during the turbopump assembly test. In the test, the LOx pump was operated under super-synchronous rotating cavitation and attached to uneven cavitation. In the vibration analysis of the fuel pump, the characteristic frequency by the super-synchronous cavitation of the LOx pump was clearly shown.
A performance test facility for turbopump inducer cavitation was developed and the inducer cavitation performance tests were performed. Major components of the performance test facility are driving unit, test section, piping, water tank, and data acquisition and control system. The maximum of testing capability of this facility are as follows: flow rate - 30kg/s; pressure - 13 bar; rotational speed 10,000rpm. This cavitation test facility is characterized by the booster pump installed at the outlet of the pump that extends the flow rate range, and by the pressure control system that makes the line pressure down to vapor pressure. The vacuum pump is used for removing the dissolved air in the water as well as the line pressure. Performance tests were carried out and preliminary data of test model inducer were obtained. The cavitation performance test and cavitation bubble flow visualization were also made. This facility is originally designed for turbopump inducer performance test and cavitation test. However it can be applied to the pump impeller performance test in the future with little modification.

This paper studies on the rudder shapes for the suppression of the cavitation around a horn-type rudder. To improve the problems due to cavitation, there have been several studies. However, these some studies are recognized as incomplete ways to suppress the rudder cavitation. In this study, the section shapes to suppress the cavitation phenomena are determined by moving the location of maximum thickness for reducing the curvature variation and changing the radius of leading edge. Also, in the pintle part, the curvature radius of the inlet outlet edge of rudder plate is changed. During the design of rudder shape, two-dimensional numerical simulations are firstly performed because those offer some advantages with that cavitation phenomena becomes predictable for a short time, and then the three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to confirm the determination. The time mean distribution of the propeller slipstream is imposed on the inlet boundary condition. As some results, this paper shows the effects reducing the range of the occurrence of cavitation, and suggests the references on the design of a horn-type rudder for the suppression of cavitation phenomena.

In this study, the cavitation test and electrochemical experiments were conducted for ALBC3(Cu-Al) alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance and cavitation characteristic in sea water. Based on the ASTMG32 regulation, the cavitation test was performed with the cavitation and cavitation erosion tester using piezoelectric effect. The electrochemical characteristics are evaluated with potentiostatic experiments in activation polarization potential range. As a result, cavitation damage is increased proportionally to temperature and time at $30{\mu}m$ amplitude. It is appeared that acceleration period in weight loss presented over 6 hours under the cavitation environment in sea water. In addition, corrosion damages were observed at the potential range of -3.2~-1.4 V as the result of potensiostatic experiments during 12 hours in activation polarization potential range.
