Background: Most of the Pinus densiflora forests, occupying the largest area, have been restored in South Korea since the 1970s. As young pioneer forests, the succession process is under way. Since the forests are distributed nationwide and are vulnerable to disturbances, the process may differ depending on the geography and/or site conditions. Therefore, we reviewed the direction, the seral communities, and the late-successional species of progressive and disturbance-driven succession nationwide in the cool-temperate zone through meta-analysis and empirical observations. Main text: As a result of a meta-analysis of the direct succession and vertical structure, we found that the P. densiflora forest is in a directionally progressive succession, changing to the broadleaved forest after forming a mixed forest with its overwhelming successor, Quercus species (particularly Q. mongolica and Q. serrata). In dry stands in a relative sense, the Quercus species was favored occupying over 80% of the abundance of the succeeding species. Therefore, in dry stands, it is presumed that Quercus-dominated stage would last for a long time due to the current dominance and long life span, and eventually, it settles as Quercus-broadleaved forest with a site change. Contrary to this, it is presumed that in mesic stands where Quercus species do not occur or have low abundance, the late-successional broadleaved species settle early to form a co-dominant forest with multiple species. Due to geographical limits, the species composition of the two late-successional forests is different. Disturbances such as insect pests and fire retrogressed vulnerable P. densiflora forest for a while. However, it was mostly restored to the Quercus forest and is expected to be incorporated in the pathway of the dry stand. Conclusions: We revealed the succession process of P. densiflora forests according to geography and moisture and found that stand moisture had a decisive effect on the species and abundance of the successor. Although the P. densiflora forest is undergoing structural changes, the forest is still young; so within a few decades, physiognomy is not likely to change. Therefore, the decrease in the forest area may be due to other causes such as disturbances and forest conversion rather than due to succession.

This study examined the perception of disasters and post-traumatic stress disorder in occupational therapy majors to provide the basic data necessary for future occupational therapy. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 545 students in occupational therapy departments of three year and four year universities. The frequency of the questionnaire was calculated by frequency analysis using the SPSS 19.0 win program. A chi-squared test was conducted to verify the analyzed questionnaire data. The reliability of the questionnaire in this study showed a Cronbach' alpha value of 0.891. According to the survey results, approximately 20% of learners who majored in occupational therapy were unaware of the symptoms, developmental mechanism, and diagnostic criteria of post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD). Knowledge of the underlying causes of psychological symptoms, such as post-traumatic stress disorder as well as physical damage through industrial accidents, was found to be 2.92 on the Likert 5-point scale. To be effective in rehabilitation treatment, the degree of the approach to education from the viewpoint of occupational therapy is important enough to be recognized as 3.90 on the Likert 5-point scale. The Pearson correlation coefficient for the need for education on disasters was higher than the correlation with the awareness of disasters.
Purpose: As the connection between physical and non-physical structures in cities is expanding and becoming more complex, the risk of complex disaster which causes damage in a complex way is increasing. Preparing for these complex disasters, it is important to preemptively identify and manage disasters that can develop into complex disasters. Therefore, this study analyzes the disaster types studied as complex disasters by analyzing the trends of domestic and international studies related to complex disasters, and presents the direction of complex disaster management in the future. Method: We first established co-occurrence networks between disaster types based on 993 articles related to complex disasters published in disaster-related journals for the last 20 years (2002-2021). Then, through network analysis, domestic and international complex disaster research trends were compared and analyzed. Result: Research on complex disasters related to storm and flood damage, infrastructure failure and fire was high in domestic studies, and it was analyzed that research on complex disasters related to earthquakes and landslides has recently increased. However, in international studies, the proportion of studies on infrastructure failure along with storm and flood damage and earthquake was high, and various types of disasters such as tsunami and drought appeared. Conclusion: The results of this study are expected to increase the understanding of the trends in complex disaster research and provide suggestions of domestic complex disaster research in the future.

A liquid storage tank is one of the most important structures in industrial complexes dealing with chemicals, and its structural damage due to an earthquake may cause a disastrous event such as the leakage of hazardous materials, fire, and explosion. It is thus essential to assess the seismic fragility of liquid storage tanks and prepare for seismic events in advance. When a liquid storage tank is oscillated by a seismic load, the hydrodynamic pressure caused by the liquid-structure interaction increases the stress and causes structural damage to the tank. Meanwhile, the seismic fragility of the structure can be estimated by considering the various sources of uncertainty and calculating the failure probabilities in a given limiting state. To accurately evaluate the seismic fragility of liquid storage tanks, a sophisticated finite element analysis is required during their reliability analysis. Therefore, in this study, FERUM-ABAQUS, a recently-developed computational platform integrated with commercial finite element and reliability analysis software packages, is introduced to perform the finite element reliability analysis and calculate the failure probability of a liquid storage tank subjected to a seismic load. FERUM-ABAUS allows for automatic data exchange between these two software packages and for the efficient seismic fragility assessment of a structure. Using this computational platform, the seismic fragility curve of a liquid storage tank is successfully obtained.

As the volume of marine hazardous and noxious substances (HNSs) transported in domestic and overseas seas increases, the risk of HNS spill accidents is gradually increasing. HNS leaked into the sea causes destruction of marine ecosystems, pollution of the marine environment, and human casualties. Secondary accidents accompanied by fire and explosion are possible. Therefore, various types of HNSs must be rapidly detected, and a control strategy suitable for the characteristics of each substance must be established. In this study, the ground HNS spill experiment process and application result of detection algorithms were presented based on hyperspectral remote sensing. For this, styrene was spilled in an outdoor pool in Brest, France, and simultaneous observation was performed through a hyperspectral sensor. Pure styrene and seawater spectra were extracted by applying principal component analysis (PCA) and the N-Findr method. In addition, pixels in hyperspectral image were classified with styrene and seawater by applying spectral matching techniques such as spectral distance similarity (SDS), spectral correlation similarity (SCS), spectral similarity value (SSV), and spectral angle mapper (SAM). As a result, the SDS and SSV techniques showed good styrene detection results, and the total extent of styrene was estimated to be approximately 1.03 m2. The study is expected to play a major role in marine HNS monitoring.
In modern society, human and social damages caused by natural disasters and frequent disaster accidents have been increased year by year. Prompt access to dangerous disaster sites that are inaccessible or inaccessible using state-of-the-art Earth observation equipment such as satellites, drones, and survey robots, and timely collection and analysis of meaningful disaster information. It can play an important role in protecting people's property and life throughout the entire disaster management cycle, such as responding to disaster sites and establishing mid-to long-term recovery plans. This special issue introduces the National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI)'s disaster management technology that utilizes various Earth observation platforms, such as mobile survey vehicles equipped with close-range disaster site survey sensors, drones, and survey robots, as well as satellite technology, which is a tool of remote earth observation. Major research achievements include detection of damage from water disasters using Google Earth Engine, mid- and long-term time series observation, detection of reservoir water bodies using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and artificial intelligence, analysis of resident movement patterns in case of forest fire disasters, and data analysis of disaster safety research. Efficient integrated management and utilization plan research results are summarized. In addition, research results on scientific investigation activities on the causes of disasters using drones and survey robots during the investigation of inaccessible and dangerous disaster sites were described.

This study is a study on the development of virtual reality to prepare for the increase in disasters of households living with companion animals due to the increase of companion animals. The increase in single-person households and DINKs(Double Income, No Kid) along with the low birth rate and aging population is raising the risk of disasters caused by companion animals in particular. Among these disasters, there is an increase in the occurrence of fires primarily due to the raising of companion animals. Electric stove fires caused by pets are the most common fires. In particular, the frequency of electric stove fires caused by cats is the highest. Careful precautions by the owner are necessary to reduce fires caused by pets. Parenting of companion animals causes pet loss syndrome due to emotional exchange. There are injuries to pets in escalators and injuries to owners in elevators due to disasters caused by the owner's negligence. In order to reduce injuries on escalators and elevators, basic etiquette for using escalators and elevators with pets is required as basic etiquette. It is necessary to utilize virtual reality to reduce disasters caused by such companion animals. Virtual reality can be experienced without a physical space in advance training to overcome disasters, so real disaster cases can be experienced immersively. Therefore, learning how to reduce fires caused by companion animals, disasters caused by owner's negligence, and petloss syndrome through virtual reality will greatly contribute to disaster prevention and reduction of social costs.

Because of recent expansion of the electric car market. it is highly growing that should be supplemented its performance and safely issue. The EMI problem due to the interlocking of electrical components that causes various safety problems such as fire in electric vehicles is emerging every time. We strive to achieve optimal charging efficiency by combining various technologies and reduce radioactive noise among the EMI noise of a weirless charging control module, one of the important parts of an electric vehicle was designed and tested. In order to analyze the EMI problems occurring in the wireless charging control module, the optimized wireless charging control module by applying the optimization design technology by learning the accumulated test data for critical factors by utilizing the Python-based script function in the Ansys simulation tool. It showed an EMI noise improvement effect of 25 dBu V/m compared to the charge control module. These results not only contribute to the development of a more stable and reliable weirless charging function in electric vehicles, but also increase the usability and efficiency of electric vehicles. This allows electric vehicles to be more usable and efficient, making them an environmentally friendly alternative.

This study examined the safety of a cable stayed bridge caused by damage to the cable system. Many cable-supported bridges, including cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges, have been constructed on the Korean peninsula. This requires efficient maintenance and management because this structure has complex structural components and systems. This large structure also often faces risks either from manmade causes or natural phenomena. In 2015, the cables on one cable-stayed bridge in South Korea was struck by lightning, which led to a fire on the cables. These cables were damaged, which put the bridge at risk. This bridge was back in use after a few weeks of investigations and replacements of the cables but this was done at enormous social and economic expense. After this event, risk-based management for infrastructure is required by public demand. Therefore, this study examined the risks on the cable system due to potential damage. In this paper, a one cable-stayed bridge in South Korea was selected and its safety was investigated based on the damage scenarios of cable system for efficient and prompt management, and to support decision making. FEM analysis was conducted to evaluate the safety of the bridges after damage to the cable system.

Smart ships related studies are being conducted in various fields owing to the development of technology, and an engine room patrol robot that can patrol the unmanned engine room is one such study. A patrol robot moves around the engine room based on the information learned through artificial intelligence and checks the machine normality and occurrence of abnormalities such as water leakage, oil leakage, and fire. Study on engine room patrol robots is mainly conducted on machine detection using artificial intelligence, however study on movement and control is insufficient. This causes a problem in that even if a patrol robot detects an object, there is no way to move to the detected object. To secure maneuverability to quickly identify the presence of abnormality in the engine room, this study experimented with whether a patrol robot can determine the shortest path by applying the A* algorithm. Data were obtained by driving a small car equipped with LiDAR in the ship engine room and creating a map by mapping the obtained data with SLAM(Simultaneous Localization And Mapping). The starting point and arrival point of the patrol robot were set on the map, and the A* algorithm was applied to determine whether the shortest path from the starting point to the arrival point was found. Simulation confirmed that the shortest route was well searched while avoiding obstacles from the starting point to the arrival point on the map. Applying this to the engine room patrol robot is believed to help improve ship safety.
