  • The hydrophobic interaction occurring between rhodamine 6G and tetraphenylborate was investigated spectroscopically by varying the medium with the addition of surfactants or ethanol. The ion aggregates formed between the two ions were destroyed by the additives. The dye existed as monomeric species in the presence of a cationic surfactant whereas it was incorporated with anionic and nonionic surfactants. For the complete dissociation more than the critical micelle concentration (cmc) was required with a nonionic surfactant while less than cmc was necessary with the others.

  • This study is to do with the synthesis of glycidyl succinate cationic gemini surfactant. The gemini surfactant was synthesized with using 2-methyl disodium succinate, epichlorohydrine and N,N-dimethyl dodecyl amine. The target material was confirmed by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR and was tested their properties. Surface active properties such as surface tension, evaluated cmc, emulsing properties, foaming properties were measured respectively at given conditions. The surface tensions for the aqueous solution of gemini surfactant were 33~34 dyne/cm and their cmc values evaluated by surface tension method were $10^{-4}{\sim}10^{-3}mol/L$. Emulsing properties of gemini surfactant was better in organic solvent and foaming power was confirmed good stability.

  • Water-in-oil emulsions including water-in-ester oil and water-in-silicone oil (W/O+S) have various advantages such as blocking moisture evaporation and forming air permeable membrane. However, their applications have been limited due to the poor stability under low viscosity condition. In this study, we investigated the effect of synergistic interaction between nonionic surfactant, micro-size particles and cationic surfactant on the stability of W/O+S formulation. The stability of W/O+S emulsions was changed as a function of cationic surfactant concentration where it increased at lower concentration and then started to decrease above a critical point. Finally, emulsion phase inversion occurred at a high concentration. The results suggest that W/O+S emulsions of low viscosity ranging from 2000 to 5000 cps can be stabilized under the conditions where a nonionic surfactant, micro-size particles and a cationic surfactant are used in the range of 1.0 ~ 4.0 wt%, 2.5 wt% and 0.1 ~ 0.5 wt%, respectively.

  • In this study, a cationic surfactant BHMAS (N,N-bis-(3'-n-dodecyloxy-2'-hydroxypropyl)-N-methyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium methyl sulfate) having two lauryl and three hydroxyl groups was synthesized by the reaction of n-dodecyl glycidyl ether and 2-aminoethanol followed by the quarternization with dimethyl sulfate. The structure of the product was elucidated by $^{1}H-NMR$ and FT-IR. The CMC (critical micelle concentration) and surface tension of BHMAS at CMC condition were found to be $9.12\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ mol/L and 28.71 mN/m respectively. Dynamic surface tension measurements using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer indicated that a relatively long time was required to saturate the interface between air and aqueous surfactant solution. The interfacial tension measured between 1 wt% surfactant solution and n-decane reached an equilibrium value of 0.045 mN/m in 5 min. The adsorption capacity of the synthesized surfactant was observed to be excellent, which suggests that the surfactant can be used as a softening agent during a laundry process.

  • Endive is widely consumed in a fresh-cut form owing to its rich nutritional content. However, fresh-cut vegetables are susceptible to contamination by pathogenic bacteria. This study investigated the antibacterial activities of the combined treatment of cinnamon leaf oil emulsion containing cetylpyridinium chloride or benzalkonium chloride (CLC and CLB, respectively) as a cationic surfactant and ultrasound (US) against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on endive. The combined treatment of CLC or CLB with US reduced the population of L. monocytogenes by 1.58 and 1.47 log colony forming units (CFU)/g, respectively, and that of E. coli O157:H7 by 1.60 and 1.46 log CFU/g, respectively, as compared with water washing treatment. The reduction levels of both pathogens were higher than those observed with 0.2 mg/ml sodium hypochlorite. In addition, the combined treatment showed no effect on the quality of the fresh-cut endive (FCE). In particular, the degree of browning in FCE was less for the treatment group than for the control and water washing treatment groups. Thus, cationic surfactant-based cinnamon leaf oil emulsions combined with US may be an effective washing treatment for the microbial safety of FCE.

  • Cationic surfactants can be used to modify surface of solids to promote adsorption of hydrophobic organic compounds. This behavior is due to the surfactant forming aggregate structure on the solid surface. Partition coefficients are commonly used to quantify the distribution of organic pollutants between the aqueous and particulate phases of aquatic system Partitioning of hydrophobic compounds to cetyltrimethylammonium bromide ( CTAB ) coated silicate has been investigated as a function of surfactant surface coverage at I=0 and 0.1 ionic strength. Toluene, Xylene, TCI sorption experiments demonstrated that the CTAB coated silicate was able to remove these hydrophobic organic compounds from solution The hydrophobic organic compound with the higher Kow had higher removals than lowest Kow hydrophobic organic compound.

  • Polypropylene fiber was dyed with 4 super hydrophobic dyes having different alkyl derivatives on the same chromophore. Double-tailed cationic surfactant, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide(DDAB), was used to make dye-dispersant complex to improve the dispersion of dyes. As the alkyl groups are longer and the hydrophobicity is increased, the dyeability onto polypropylene fiber was improved and deep coloration was obtained. As for the fastness properties, wash fastness was relatively good, while light fastness was bit low.

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposite particles with particle size of 275${\sim}$292 nm range were successfully prepared using emulsion polymerization. The content of montmorillonite based on the methyl methacrylate monomer was chosen as 30 wt.%. 2,2-azobis(isobuthylamidine hydrochloride) and n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as an initiator and a surfactant in cationic emulsion system. Potassium persulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate were used as an initiator and a surfactant in anionic emulsion system. The evidence of intercalated /exfoliated structure of montmorillonite in the nanocomposite prepared in our experiment was confirmed by wide angle x-ray diffraction patterns of $d_{001}$ plane. Thermal behavior of nanocomposite was traced using DSC and TGA. It was found that the nanocomposite particle prepared by cationic emulsion system showed intercalated structured. We also found that the nanocomposite particle obtained from anionic emulsion system resulted in the fully exfoliated structure.

  • Nanoaggregates of triple hydrophilic block copolymers comprised of poly(ethylene oxide), poly(sodium 2-acrylamido)-2-methylpropanesulfonate), and poly(methacrylic acid) (PEO-PAMPS-PMAA) and the cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) have been fabricated. The formation of $^{\circ}^{\circ}$the nanoaggregates is based on electrostatic interaction of sulfonate and carboxylate groups of PAMPS and PMAA blocks with the cationic surfactant, which results in insolubilization of these blocks. The formation of micelle is observed by dynamic light scattering measurements. Binding of DTAC to the anionic blocks of PEO-PAMPS-PMAA is confirmed by electrophoresis measurements.

  • Cationic surfactant can be used as cosmetics and chemical dispersants. The variation of critical micelle concentration (CMC) with temperature over the range $40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ for N-octadecyl pyridinium bromide was measured by drop methods. Thermodynamic quantities such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity for micellization of N-octadecyl pyridinium bromide in water were calculated by fourth-degree polynominal equation In the result, free energy change was decreased generally by the increment of temperature.
