  • As a part of the study on manufacture of low density paper by organic bulky agent treatment, the effects of cationic fatty acid bulky agent on physical and optical properties of handsheets were elucidated. The research on change of physical and optical properties of paper samples according to bulky agent concentration, pulp type, and pulp combination were carried out. The results demonstrated that an increase of the concentration of cationic fatty acid bulky agent was proportional to an increase of the bulky properties of paper samples while tensile strength decreased. Also, the more the treated concentration of cationic fatty acid bulky agent increased, the more the ISO brightness of paper samples decreased while the opacity increased. The effectiveness of bulky agent with softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) was higher than that with hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP). In addition, the effectiveness with mixed pulps was higher than that with single pulp.

  • Polymer cationic agent was prepared by the initial polymerization of epichlorohydrin followed by amination with diethyl-amine. Cotton fibre treated with the polymer (6∼8% o.w.f.) is highly cationic and exhibit increased substantivity for anionic dyes. The modified substrate could be dyed with direct dyes without salt or a little salt from dye bath. The increased concentration of cationic agents resulted in an increase the colour yield. Futhermore, treated cotton has an electropositive surface charge. Adsorption of direct dye can be attributed to both van der waals force and electrostatic attraction.

  • The dyeing properties of modified wool were examined with a series of acid, reactive and cationic dyes. Cationic agent and sulphamic acid were applied to wool fabric for dye assist and resist effect. Wool pretreated with cationic agent showed better uptake of acid and reactive dyes than did untreated wool. On the other hand, the dyeing behavior of wool pretreated with sulphamic acid was found as follows : Acid dyes were poorly resisted with a hydrophobic mechanism but acid dyes were strongly resisted with a hydrophilic mechanism. Reactive dyes were also found to be effectively resisted. Sulphamic acid introduces sulphonate group into wool's structure, it has increased better uptake of cationic dyes than untreated wool. The degree of differential uptake depends on the level of pretreatment and produces a variety of tone-on-tone and multicolor effect in piece dyeing.

  • The effects of pulp beating degree and bulky promotor concentration on the properties of handsheet including a bulk and strength have been investigated during manufacturing of low density paper (high bulk paper) with cationic fatty acid bulky promotor. It was found that paper bulk increased with increasing cationic fatty acid bulky agent concentration, while tensile strength decreased. On the other hand the opacity of handseets also increased with increasing cationic fatty acid bulky agent concentration, while brightness decreased slightly. With increasing pulp beating degree, paper bulk as well as tensile strength increased, while opacity decreased. Brightness did not show a significant difference with increasing pulp beating degree. The highest bulk and strength values were observed when 1.5% (SwBKP) and 2% (HwBKP) of bulky promotor was treated into the 450 mL CSF pulp slurry.

  • Due to the formation of random three dimensional network structure, which cause a lot of scattering of phonons, the thermal conductivity is low when the liquid crystalline epoxy is cured with amine-based curing agent. This problem is solved by using a cationic initiator that can make mesogen groups to be stacked structure. In this experiment, the thermal stability is compared by investigating the activation energy of isothermal decomposition through TGA of an epoxy using an amine-based curing agent and a cationic initiator. As a result, the energy of the activation of the epoxy using a cationic initiator is high. Compared with the previous experiments, the thermal stability is similar to the thermal conductivity.

  • Effects of cationic polyvinylamine (PVAm) dry strength agent on effectiveness of optical brightening agent (OBA) during fine papermaking and the mechanism for brightness reduction of paper by PVAm was investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy and turbidity measurement of OBA solution with PVAm. It was shown that PVAm reduced brightness of paper while opacity was not varied and tensile strength of paper was increased. Tetra-type OBA solution showed the peaks around the wavelength of 280 nm and 330 nm and the increase in the OBA concentration increased the UV absorbance in all wavelength. Addition of PVAm into the OBA solution decreased the UV absorbance at 280 nm. Turbidities of OBA and PVAm solutions were close to zero, respectively, while the turbidity value increased for the mixed solution of OBA and PVAm in various mixing ratios and the highest value was obtained when the mixing ratio of PVAm and OBA was 5:5, meaning that cationic PVAm formed complex with anionic OBA. In conclusion, cationic PVAm could form a complex with anionic OBA and that reduced UV absorbance, resulting in the reduced brightness of paper.

  • It is essential to use base papers having proper surface characteristics in coating operation for improving coated paper quality and coater runnability. To fulfill these purposes, surface sizing of coating base stock with oxidized starch is commonly practiced. Use of cationic starch for surface sizing improves coated paper quality since cationic starch penetrates less into paper structure. The immediate objective of this study was to examine the influence of surface sizing with starch solutions containing cationic polymers on the rheology of coating colors and the effect on physical properties of coated papers. Changes of rheological characteristics of coating colors placed on the plastic substrate surface sized with cationic and anionic starch were determined. Results of rheological test showed that cationic polymer surface sizing agent increased electrostatic interaction with coating colors and increased storage modulus. This new technology of using cationic polymer as surface sizing additive was considered to be advantageous for base papers at low basis weights since it would improve the coverage and optical properties of coated papers.

  • Dyeing properties of the colorants extracted from pomegranate hull on cotton fabric were investigated. Effects of dyeing conditions and mordanting on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Cationic agent treatment was done for cotton to improve low dyeability in natural dyeing. In addition antimicrobial activity of the cotton fabrics dyed with pomegranate colorants was examined by the shake flask method. Pomegranate colorants showed low affinity to cotton fiber and its adsorption isotherm was Freundlich type. Therefore, hydrogen bonding was involved in the adsorption of pomegranate colorants onto cotton fiber. Mordants did not significantly increase dye adsorption. Pomegranate colorants produced mainly yellow color on cotton fabric. In order to improve dye uptake, cotton was cationized by treating with Cationon UK(quarterly ammonium salt) and chitosan. The cationized cotton with Cationon UK showed higher dye uptake and shorter dyeing time, compared with the untreated cotton. Chitosan treated cotton also showed high dye uptake, but chitosan was less effective compared with Cationon UK. Fastness to washing, perspiration, and rubbing was not improved by mordanting and cationizing treatment, but light fastness was increased by all mordants and cationic agent. As dye concentration increased, bacterial reduction rate was increased and mordants did not significantly increase bacterial reduction rate.

  • Cotton fabric was treated with a reactive anionic agent in order to have anionic sites(-S03-) on it, which made it possible for the fabric to adsorb various cationic materials. In this study, the adsorptivity of various heavy metal ions such as Pb(II), Cd(II), Cr(III), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni (II) and Cr(VI) on the cotton fabrics treated with anionic agent was examined at the various conditions; concentrations of heavy metal ions, pHs of solution, reaction time and temperature. As a result, the adsorptivity of the heavy metal ions on the cotton fabrics treated with the anionic agent was highly increased comparing to that of untreated cotton fabrics. The order of the adsorptivity was as follows: $Pb(II)>Cd(II)>Cu(II)\geqNi(II)\geqCo(II)>Cr(III)\ggCr(VI)$. The adsorption amounts of most heavy metal ions were increased in weak alkaline conditions and were reached to an adsorption equilibrium within 10 ~ 30 minutes. The maximum adsorption ratios of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were respectively 99% and 80% of the initial concentration of heavy metal ions. Therefore the anionized cotton fabrics seem to be utilized as an adsorption fabrics for the removal of heavy metal ions in the waste water.
