An ecofriendly catalytic route for selective synthesis of $N$-substituted azacyclopentanes, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic intermediates for many bioactive compounds, was established by carrying out $N$-heterocyclization (di $N$-alkylation) of primary amines with 1,4-dichloro butane (as dialkylating agent) using catalytic amount of hydrotalcite as solid base catalyst. The hydrotalcite was found to be efficient solid base catalyst for di $N$-alkylation of different primary amines (aniline, benzyl amine, cyclohexyl amine and n-butyl amine) giving 82 to 96% conversion (at optimized reaction condition) of 1,4-dichloro butane and > 99% selectivity of respective $N$-substituted azacyclopentanes within 30 min. under solvent free condition. The reaction parameters significantly influence the conversion of 1,4-dichloro butane to $N$-substituted azacyclopentanes. The nature of substituent present on amino group affects the reactivity of amine substrates for di $N$-alkylation reaction with 1,4-dichloro butane. The 1,4-dichloro butane was found to be highly reactive alkylating agent for di $N$-alkylation of amines as compared to 1,4-dihydroxy butane. The reusability of the catalyst and its chemical stability in the reaction was demonstrated.

A series of Zr,S co-doped $TiO_2$ were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method and characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The presence of sulfur caused a red-shift in the absorption band of $TiO_2$. Co-doping of sulfur and zirconium (Zr-$TiO_2$-S) improves the surface properties such as surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter and also enhances the thermal stability of the anatase phase. The Zr-$TiO_2$-S systems are very effective visible-light active catalysts for the degradation of toluene. All reactions follow pseudo firstorder kinetics with the decomposition rate reaching as high as 77% within 4 h. The catalytic activity decreases in the following order: Zr-$TiO_2$-S >$TiO_2$-S >Zr-$TiO_2$>$TiO_2$$\approx$ P-25, demonstrating the synergic effect of codoping with zirconium and sulfur. When the comparison is made within the series of Zr-$TiO_2$-S, the catalytic performance is found to be a function of Zr-contents as follows: 3 wt % Zr-TiO2-S >0.5 wt % Zr-$TiO_2$-S> 5 wt % Zr-$TiO_2$-S >1 wt % Zr-$TiO_2$-S. Higher calcination temperature decreases the reactivity of Zr-$TiO_2$-S.
The $SnO_2$ with a particle size of about 300 nm instead of Ni is used in this study to overcome rapid catalytic deactivation by the formation of a $NiAl_2O_4$ spinal structure on the conventional Ni/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst and simultaneously impregnated the catalyst with potassium (K). The $SnO_2-K_2O$ impregnated Zeolite Y catalyst ($SnO_2-K_2O$/ZY) exhibited significantly higher ethanol reforming reactivity that that achieved with $SnO_2$ 100 and $SnO_2$ 30 wt %/ZY catalysts. The main products from ethanol steam reforming (ESR) over the $SnO_2$-$K_2O$/ZY catalyst were $H_2$, $CO_2$, and $CH_4$, with no evidence of any CO molecule formation. The $H_2$ production and ethanol conversion were maximized at 89% and 100%, respectively, over $SnO_2$ 30 wt %-$K_2O$ 3.0 wt %/ZY at 600 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 h at a $CH_3CH_2OH:H_2O$ ratio of 1:1 and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 12,700 $h^{-1}$. No catalytic deactivation occurred for up to 73 h. This result is attributable to the easier and weaker of reduction of Sn components and acidities over $SnO_2-K_2O$/ZY catalyst, respectively, than those of Ni/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ catalysts.

In this study, the Ni-based catalysts for the production of synthetic natural gas were prepared by various preparation methods such as the co-precipitation, precipitation, impregnation and physical mixing methods. The ranges of the reaction conditions were the temperatures of 250~$350^{\circ}C$, $H_2$/CO mole ratio of 3.0, the pressures of 1 atm and the space velocity of 20000 $ml/g_{-cat{\cdot}}{\cdot}h$. It was found that the catalyst prepared by precipitation method had higher CO conversion than the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation method. While the catalyst prepared by precipitation method had the formation of NiO structure, the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation method had the formation of $NiAl_2O_4$ structure. It was confirmed that Ni-based catalyst prepared by the physical mixing method had the lowest CO conversion because it was deactivated by the production of $Ni_3C$ during the methanation. As a result, it was shown clearly that Ni-based catalysts prepared by impregnation method expressed the highest catalytic activity in CO methanation.

The promotion effects of noble metals upon the activity and reducibility in steam methane reforming over $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalysts were investigated. While $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalysts require the pre-reduction by $H_2$, the noble metal-added catalysts show high catalytic activities without pre-treatment. According to $CH_4$-TPR, the addition of noble metal makes the $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalyst easily reducible. The reduction degree of NiO in the noble metal-added catalysts after using at $650^{\circ}C$ without pre-reduction was $15{\sim}20%$, and was lower than that in the $H_2$-reduced $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalyst(reduction degree=27%). The enhancement of the catalytic activity over noble metal-added catalysts results from easier reducibility by addition of noble metal and the synergy effect between noble metal and Ni.

In addition to the catalysts' activity and selectivity, the deactivation of catalysts during use is of practical importance. It is crucial to understand the phenomena of the deactivation to predict the loss of activity during catalyst usage so that the high operational costs associated with catalyst replacement can be reduced. In this study, the activity of Ru catalysts, such as nanoparticles (3~6 nm) and polycrystalline thin film (50 nm), have been investigated under CO oxidation and oxidative/reductive reaction conditions at various temperatures with the ambient pressure X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS). With APXPS, the surface oxides on the catalyst are measured and monitored in-situ. It was found that the Ru film exhibited faster oxidation-and-reduction compared to that of nanoparticles showing mild oxidative-and-reductive characteristics. Additionally, the larger Ru nanoparticles showed a higher degree of oxide formation at all temperatures, suggesting a higher stability of the oxide. These observations are in agreement with the catalytic activity of Ru catalysts. The loss of activity of Ru films is correlated with bulk oxide formation, which is inactive in CO oxidation. The Ru nanoparticle, however, does not exhibit deactivation under similar conditions, suggesting that its surface is covered with a highly active ultrathin surface oxide. Since the active oxide is more stable as nanoparticles than as a film, the nanoparticles showed mild oxidative/reductive behavior, as confirmed by APXPS results. We believe these simultaneous observations of both the surface oxide of Ru catalysts and the reactivity in real time enable us to pinpoint the deactivation phenomena more precisely and help in designing more efficient and stable catalytic systems.

Activated charcoal supported nickel molybdenum carbide (carburized Ni-Mo/AC) catalysts were prepared by wet-impregnation followed by temperature-programmed carburization using 20% $CH_4/H_2$ gas. The effects of pH and initial Ni/Mo mole ratio during wet-impregnation step on the characteristics of the carburized Ni-Mo/AC catalysts were investigated using ICP, XRD, XPS, BET and $CO_2$-TPD techniques, and correlated with the catalytic activity of the carburized Ni-Mo/AC in methane dry reforming reaction. Comparison of the results of methane dry reforming reaction kinetics with the results of characterization of the carburized Ni-Mo/AC catalyst showed that the catalytic activity in methane dry reforming reaction was higher at higher initial Ni/Mo mole ratio or at lower pH(3~natural value). This phenomenon was related to the crystal size of metallic Ni in the carburized Ni-Mo/AC catalyst.

The preparation of glycerol carbonate (GC) from urea through carbonylation with renewable glycerol was investigated by using ionic liquid catalysts. It was found that quaternary ammonium salt and imidazolium salt ionic liquids with a shorter alkyl chain length and higher nucleophilic anion showed better catalytic performance. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and degree of vacuum on the reactivity of TBAC catalyst ware discussed. Zinc chloride ($ZnCl_2$) was used as co-catalyst with the ionic liquid catalyst. The mixed catalyst showed a synergy effect on the glycerol conversion and GC yield probably due to the acid-base properties of the catalysts.

Magnesium hydride has a high hydrogen storage capacity (7.6 wt.%), and is cheap and lightweight, thus advantageous as a hydrogen storage alloy. However, Mg-based hydrides undergo hydrogenation/dehydrogenation at high temperature and pressure due to their thermodynamic stability and high oxidation reactivity. MWCNTs exhibit prominent catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage properties of $MgH_2$, weakening the interaction between Mg and H atoms and reducing the activation energy for nucleation of the metal phase by co-milling Mg with carbon nanotubes. Therefore, it is suggested that combining transition metals with carbon nanotubes as mixed dopants has a significant catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage properties of $MgH_2$. In this study, Material life cycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of Mg-CaO-10 wt.% MWCNTs composites manufacturing process. The software of material life cycle assessment (MLCA) was Gabi 6. Through this, environmental impact assessment was performed for each process.

We study on the oxygen behavior of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts in the $NH_3$-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) prepared by the ball milling processing. There are not any changes in crystal structure and surface area of the $TiO_2$ catalyst by ball milling, but the maximal reduction temperature decreased in $H_2$-temperature programmed reduction (TPR) analysis. Experimental observations with various concentrations of oxygen indicate that all catalysts showed a very low NOx conversion rate in the absence of oxygen and the reactivity of ball milled catalyst higher depending on the oxygen. It is occurred because the degree of participation of atmospheric oxygen and lattice oxygen is great than that of the not-milled catalyst.
