  • This study tries to analyze the problems of rules for cataloging currently used n Korea such as KCR 3rd ed., KORMARC Description Rules, and KORMARC format, and to propose the methods solving the non-standardization of Korean cataloging records as follows: 1) No-main heading principles should be established so as to be applied to MARC format. 2) Description rules of cataloging currently used in Korea should be coordinated in accordance with MARC system and principles of bibliographical description. 3) Description rules of cataloging currently used in Korea should be coordinated in accordance with MARC system and principles of bibliographical description. 4) Unifying the format for CRT screen to display online catalog records are needed. 5) Conventional cataloging rules and MARC format should be coordinated.

  • This study has been done to review the historical development of the cataloging system of books with emphasis on those in England and the U. S. The findings can be summarized as follows: (1) In 1844, Sir Panizzi invented what seems to be the first of its kind in history to list the inventory systematically at the British Museum. It is believed to be a complete system consisting of 91 articles. (2) A comparatively systematic system was developed in America by Jewett. in 1852. Composed of only 39 articles, the system is considered a renovative one worked out with due regard to the infrastructure of a library. (3) In 1876, a classic system based on a lexicographical order was set up by Cutter. Rated as the best one that was designed by an individual, the theory has since exercised widespreading effects on cataloging. (4) American and British library scientists collaborated in printing several editions of numerous volumes on the principles of classification, but they are not believed fully successful in establishing a consistent and compressive system. Their efforts found significance rather in their being the first international collaboration and setting a foundation upon which the international system of today has been developed. (5) The ALA Rule, published concurrently in ALA and LC in 1949, had two parts in its classification, the list of authors and that of titles. Its scientific classification has completed the cataloging of books in its developmental stage. (6) The 1967 American-British Rules integrated the cataloging systems published under separate covers by authors and titles. The system as well as the 1961 Paris System has greatly contributed to the standardization of bibliographical description throughout the English-speaking countries. The International Standard Book Description standardized Bibliographic system has enabled the librarians in different countries to exchange their bibliographical sources easily, helped to overcome the language barrier in listing and contributed to the efficient reading of bibliographical records through machines. (7) The second edition of the Angelo-American cataloging Rules, promulgated in 1978 under the influence of the international standard bibliographical description, was the one in which all the previous Rules were revised to have their strong points. The adoption of punctuation system to employ the computerized data processing and the standardization of description are expected to improve the cataloging system not only in the English speaking countries but in the Universal Bibliographic Control as well.

  • The school library work support system was newly developed as 2024 Doksero DLS, but the DLS-compliant cataloging rules have not changed significantly since it was initially developed, and the current developed cataloging guidelines in 2020 also need to be updated. This study is to propose the considerations for developing guidelines for applying the DLS cataloging rules based on KCR4 by comparing the existing DLS (Ver. 2.0) cataloging rules, the 2024 DLS cataloging rules, and the 2020 bibliographic registration guidelines (Ver. 2.2). On this basis, considerations were suggested in terms of changing and expanding data elements, revising content rules for cataloging, method for recording access point, and developing controlled vocabularies. This study will allow to implement revision of DLS cataloging rules, development of guidelines, and system improvements.

  • The goal of this study was to examine the relationships between usability and the searching experience, and to uncover where an integrated cataloging and metadata system lay the usability problems of its primary users, catalogers. This study showed that the most important aspect of usability in Connexion lay in the experience of information retrieval system. Also, it showed there are seventeen usability problems to be improved in Connexion. Needless to say, it is most important to note that usability is not an exclusive goal of such an integrated cataloging and metadata system. Other goals such as quality of catalogs, and the reliability of its cataloging and metadata system are equally its concern. This study also suggested more testing on diverse cataloging systems and specific user groups, especially catalogers.

  • The purposes of this study are to explore FRBR utilities such as work clustering and expression clustering and problems of application of the FRBR by developing work and expression clustering algorithm and implementing it into cataloging system, and to suggest new cataloging rules for FRBR and guideline of MARC description to improve FRBR work clustering. FRBR was suggested by necessitation of collocation function of bibliographic records according to increase of searching materials and multi-version materials, but FRBRization has some problems such as imperfect conversion of bibliographic records to FRBR records and inappropriateness of current cataloging rules for FRBR. Bibliographic records must be processed by FRBR algorithm to construct FRBRized system, but bibliographic records and current cataloging rules couldn't perfectly support FRBRization. Therefore cataloging rules and guidelines of MARC description for FRBR are needed. For constructing FRBRized cataloging system in Korea, it is needed to find problems and solution through FRBR practical application such as developing FRBR algorithm and applying it to cataloging records.

  • The bibliographic records have been built up following the Digital Library System (DLS) cataloging rules in the school libraries. But it is hard to use DLS cataloging rule as the standardization guidelines in building up the bibliographic records in school libraries because it is not the detailed cataloging rules, has inconsistency in its own rules, and disagrees with KCR4 rules. Therefore, this study is to suggest the new amendment for DLS cataloging rule to improve the bibliographic records quality and to produce the standardized bibliographic records. To grasp the problems of the DLS cataloging rules, DLS cataloging rule was analyzed with KCR4 rule and the interviews were conducted to the 9 school librarian that have experienced over 3 years. The result showed that it was needed to correct the terms to accord with KCR4, and to amend the DLS rule in each area.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify and present the solution to the problems of KORMARC on Disc, which was produced by the National Library of Korea and is being distributed nationwide. Currently, KORMARC on Disc has reached the serious level of duplicates of input record, error on input data and noise of retrieval. Futhermore, input data is not in accordance with KORMARC Rules for Descriptive Cataloging, thus generating many problems. Of all thing, since current MARC system itself is based on manual system, it does not correspond effectively to the online environment. Accordingly, in order to elevate the quality of KORMARC database, current problems must be resolved, at the same time, korea Machine Readable Cataloging must be modified into a format, more suitable to Machine Readable environment. Consequently, the current study analyzes and identifies problems of data in KORMARC on Disc, at the same time, it examines currently used KORMARC Format and Korea machine Readable Cataloging Rules for descriptive Cataloging as to provide easier usage and guidelines for accurate data inputs.
