The engine of a large ship operates under wet conditions using a fuel such as bunker C oil, which includes sulfur and many impurities. A cylinder liner made of cast iron is very susceptible to damage such as scuffing on the surface. This scuffing can reliably be attributed to the destruction of the oil film and the corrosion wear caused by water and sulfur included in the fuel, along with abrasion impurities and poor lubricants. In this study, a reciprocating friction and wear test was carried out with a cast iron specimen, which was used to simulate an engine cylinder in a corrosive environment. Base-oil and stirred oil containing distilled water, NaCl solution, and dilute sulfuric acid were used as lubricants. The friction surface was analyzed using a microscope and EDAX, and the friction coefficient was measured using a load-cell under each experimental condition. We then attempted to investigate the damage to the cylinder liner using the results.
Hot dip aluminizing (HDA) is widely used in industry for improving corrosion resistance of material. The formation of intermetallic compound layers during the contact between dissimilar materials at high temperature is common phenomenon. Generally, intermetallic compound layers of $Fe_2Al_5$ and $FeAl_3$ are formed at the Al alloy and Fe substrate interface. In case of cast iron, high contact angle of graphite existed in the matrix inhibits the formation of intermetallic compound layer, which carry with it the disadvantage of a reduced reaction area and mechanical properties. In present work, the process for the removal of graphite existed on the surface of specimen has been investigated. And also HDA was proceeded at $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes in aluminum alloy melt. The efficiency of graphite removal was increased with the reduction of particle size in sanding process. Graphite appears to be present both in the region of melting followed by re-solidification and in the intermetallic compound layer, which could be attributed to the fact that the surface of cast iron is melted down by the formation of low melting point phase with the diffusion of Al and Si to the cast iron. Intermetallic compound layer consisted of $Fe(Al,Si)_3$ and $Fe_2Al_5Si$, the layer formed at cast iron side contained lower amount of Si.
The suitability of the pattern manufactured with the development figure was considered by reviewing the development conditions that can be directly connected to the basic pattern in the human body surface development figure with the cast bandage method. The method to prepare the sleeve basic pattern was based on the cylindrical surface development method, and the sleeve basic pattern covering the 45 and 90 degrees momentum of the arm-movement was made by using the cast-type body surface development figure prepared with the horizontal line of the sleeve hem placed horizontally in the plan and by combining the cast-type body surface development figure in the standing position with the figure in the moving position. The test clothing was prepared with the sleeve pattern adding the bodice pattern in the standing position and the momentum and was worn on the FRP replica. The relationship theory of the body surface development figure with the pattern was derived by reviewing the suitability from the wearing state. The sleeve-cap height of the sleeve basic pattern resulted in about 80% in the standing position when the needs for a physical activity are 45 degrees and the about 50% when the needs for a physical activity are 90 degrees. The additional size of the diagonal length of the sleeve-cap could be set as "0" if the sleeve-cap height is low by 50% and as 50% of the additional size in the standing position if the sleeve-cap height is 80%.
Statement of problem: Titanium is well known as a proper metal for the dental restorations, because it has an excellent biocompatibility, resistance to corrosion, and mechanical property. However, adhesion between titanium and dental porcelains is related to the diffusion of oxygen to the reaction layers formed on cast-titanium surfaces during porcelain firing and those oxidized layers make the adhesion difficult to be formed. Many studies using mechanical, chemical and physical methods to enhance the titanium-ceramic adhesion have been actively performed. Purpose: This study meant to comparatively analyse the adhesion characteristics depending on different titanium surface coatings after coating the casts and wrought titanium surfaces with Au and TiN. Material and method: In this study, the titanium specimens (CP-Ti, Grade 2, Kobe still Co. Japan) were categorized into cast and wrought titanium. The wrought titanium was cast by using the MgO-based investment(Selevest CB, Selec). The cast and wrought titanium were treated with Au coating($ParaOne^{(R)}$., Gold Ion Sputter, Model PS-1200) and TiN coating(ATEC system, Korea) and the ultra low fusing dental porcelain was fused and fired onto the samples. Biaxial flection test was done on the fired samples and the porcelain was separated. The adhesion characteristics of porcelain and titanium after firing and the specimen surfaces before and after the porcelain fracture test were observed with SEM. The atomic percent of Si on all sample surfaces was comparatively analysed by EDS. In addition, the constituents of specimen surface layers after the porcelain fracture and the formed compound were evaluated by X-ray diffraction diagnosis. Result: The results of this study were obtained as follows : 1. The surface characteristics of cast and wrought titanium after surface treatment(Au, TiN, $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting) were similar and each cast and wrought titanium showed similar bonding characteristics. 2. Before and after the biaxial flection test, the highest atomic weight change of Si component was found in $Al_2O_3$ sandblasted wrought titanium(28.6at.% $\rightarrow$ 8.3at.%). On the other hand, the least change was seen in Au-Pd-In alloy(24.5at.% $\rightarrow$ 9.1at.%). 3. Much amount of Si components was uniformly distributed in Au and TiN coated titanium, but less amount of Si's was unevenly dispersed on Al2O3 sandblasting surfaces. 4. In X-ray diffraction diagnosis after porcelain debonding, we could see $Au_2Ti$ compound and TiN coating layers on Au and TiN coated surfaces and $TiO_2$, typical oxide of titanium, on all titanium surfaces. 5. Debonding of porcelain on cast and wrought titanium surface after the biaxial flection is considered as a result of adhesion deterioration between coating layers and titanium surfaces. We found that there are both adhesive failure and cohesive failure at the same time. Conclusion: These results showed that the titanium-ceramic adhesion could be improved by coating cast and wrought titanium surfaces with Au and TiN when making porcelain fused to metal crowns. In order to use porcelain fused to titanium clinically, it is considered that coating technique to enhance the bonding strength between coating kKlayers and titanium surfaces should be developed first.
The surface rolling for cylindrical surface of a grey cast iron was carried out using a lathe with a simple newly-designed tool system. A surface rolling tool used was steel ball whose diameter was 3/8 inch (9.525mm) The effects of rolling feeds and number of rolling on surface rolling were investigated. The contact pressure between ball and workpiece which was considered as Hertz's contact problem was examined and the track of motion of a ball on the cylindrical surface of a work- piece was measured according to the rolling feed. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The roughness of the machined surface which was originally 5.3 .approx. 28 umRz decreased to 1.2 .approx. 5 umRz according to rolling feeds and numbers of rolling. 2. The hardness increased from Hv 260 to Hv 290 .approx. 310 through 2 .approx. 4 rollings according to the roughness of machined surfaces. 3. The reduction of diameter was found to be proportional to the variations of roughness of previous machined surfaces. About 60% to 90% of reduction in diameter was made during the first rolling process. 4. An equation relating the reduction of diameter and the variation of surface roughness after surface rolling was presented using a geometric surface model. 5. An equation for the calculation of dynamic contact area between pressure ball and workpiece according to the rolling feed was presented.

Disinfection of dental impressions are necessary due to contamination with patient’s saliva and blood, which is a potential for cross-infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of disinfection of four hydrophilic rubber impression materials with three disinfecting solutions, on the dimensional stability and surface hardness of improved stone casts. Three hydrophilic vinyl polysiloxane impression materials(Express, Reprosil, Exafine) and one polyether impression material(Impregum-F) were mixed according to the manufacturer’s directions and impressions were made on a ADA specification No. 19 stainless-steeldie. On removal of the impressions, each impression was immersed in one of the disinfectants(Banicide, Potadine, Clorox) for 10 minutes. After disinfection, type IV improved stone. casts were poured. On this cast, the linear dimension and surface hardness were measuredusing a Measurescope(Nikon, Japan) and a Barcol hardness tester(Barber, Colman Co U. S. A). The results were as follows : 1. The improved stone casts from disinfected Reprosil and Impregum-F impression material did not show dimensional changes(P>0.01). Those from disinfected Express and Exafine impression material showed dimensional changes(P<0.01). The amount of shrinkage was not clinically significant. 2. The improved stone casts from disinfected Express impression material did not exhibit changes in surface hardness(P>0.01), but those from disinfected Reprosil, Exafine, Imp regnum-F impression material showed changes in surface hardness(P<0.01). 3. The dimensinal stability and surface hardness of the improved stone casts were satisfactory using Banicide on Express, all disinfectants used in this study on Reprosil, Potadin and Clorox on Exafine, Banicide and Clorox on Impregum-F. According to these results, immersion disinfection of hydrophilic rubber impression mate rials did not adversely affect the resultant casts. Nevertheless compatibility tests of impression materials and disinfectants should be done when disinfecting impressions.
We investigated the changes in microstructure and surface roughness of the compound layer of GC250D gray cast iron, commonly used in brake discs, during gas nitriding. The gas atmosphere of the nitriding process was controlled with a hydrogen partial pressure of 49.5%, and the process was conducted at a nitriding temperature of 520℃ with various process times. As the nitriding process time of the GC250D material increased, both the depth of hardening and the thickness of the compound layer increased, with a maximum surface hardness of approximately 1265 HV0.1 was measured. Additionally, the surface roughness increased with the process time. Phase analysis of the compound layer revealed an increase in the proportion of the γ' phase as the nitriding process time increased. Changes in the formation of the compound layer were observed depending on the orientation of graphite within the material, leading to the formation of wedges. Therefore, the increase in surface roughness appears to be attributed to the uneven compounds, the expansion of the compound layer and wedges formed on the surface during the nitriding process.
We fabricated test samples containing various shape elements and surface roughness checking points for the jewelry cast master patterns by employing the 3D computer aided design (CAD), selective laser sintering (SLS) rapid prototype (RP) with the DuraForm powders. We varied the alignment angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ at a given layer thickness of 0.08 and 0.1mm, respectively, in RP operation. Dimensions of the shape elements as well as values of surface roughness are characterized by an optical microscope and a contact-scanning profilometer. Surface roughness values of the top and vertical face increased as the alignment angle increased, while the other roughness values and shape elements variation were not depending on the alignment angle. The resolution of the shape realization was enhanced as the layer thickness became smaller. The minimum diameter of the hole, common in jewelry design, was 1.2 mm, and the shrinkage became 12% at the 1.6 mm-diameter hole, Our results implied that we face down the proposed design elements with $0^{\circ}$ alignment angle, and consider the shrinkage effect of each shape element in DuraForm RP jewelry modeling.
Effect of Cu content on microstructural and magnetic properties of a $(Nd_{26.06},Dy_{6.51})Fe_{bal.}$$Cu_xB_{0.97}$(wt.%), (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) strip-cast was studied. The average inter-lamellar spacing in the free surface and wheel side of the strip cast increased as the Cu content increases. The grain uniformity, the grain alignment, and (00L) texture of the strip cast increased with Cu contents up to 0.4 wt.%. These microstructural changes were attributed to the decrease of the effective cooling rate of the melted alloy caused by the decrease of the melting temperature of resulting from Cu addition. Coercivity and remanence were increased because of the grain alignment and (00L) texture improvement with Cu contents up to 0.4 wt.%.
