  • Differences in hardness and microstructure between surface and area at 0.3 mm below the surface after quenching and tempering of ductile cast iron for rear planet carrier of automotive transmission have been investigated. Microstructure of ductile cast iron consisted of ferrite, pearlite, and nodular graphite. The amount of pearlite increased with going down to the half-thickness area. It was found that Cr and Mo segregated to the pearlite and the pearlite transformed to the harder martensite during quenching. The martensite was more resistant to the decomposition to ferrite and cementite during tempering because of segregation of Cr and Mo, resulting in the harder tempered martensite. Consequently, the hardness of the surface with less amount of pearlite, corresponding to the harder martensite in the quenched and tempered microstructure, was lower than that of the area at 0.3 mm below the surface.

  • Abrasive wear characteristics of high Cr white cast iron-based hardfacing were investigated using the rubber wheel abrasion wear test method according with the ASTM G65-85. Mild steel was also tested for comparison with high Cr cast iron hardfacing. Wear experiments, where the applied force, wheel revolution rate and abrasive powder feed rate were selected as test valuables, were planned and analyzed by response surface method to evaluate wear statistically and quantitatively. Weight loss of high Cr cast iron hardfacing was mostly affected by the applied force and wheel revolution rate, and little by the powder feed rate. Weight loss of mild steel was greatly affected by the wheel revolution rate and powder feed rate, and slowly and steadily increased with the applied force. Abrasive wear mechanism of high Cr cast iron and mild steel was discussed in the light of the wear test results.

  • This study was carried out two point view that reuse of sludge and adsorption of benzene, toluene and o-xylene of VOCs in cast, carbonized cast and activated carbon. The cation exchange capacity of cast and carbonized cast were 59.2, 112 meq/100g, respectively. The specific surface were 560, $800m^2/g$, respectively. The average removal rates of benzene by 50g cast of 50% hydrous cast, anhydrous cast, carbonized cast, activated carbon were 15.0, 41.2, 88.2, 99.4% in 60min of retention time. The average removal efficiency of toluene by 50 g cast of 50% hydrous cast, anhydrous cast, carbonized cast, activated carbon were 12.5, 34.2, 88.2, 99.5% in 60 min of retention time. The average removal rates of o-xylene 50 g cast of 50% hydrous cast, anhydrous cast, carbonized cast, activated carbon were 8.8, 28.5, 84.8, 98.1% in 60min of retention time. The adsorption efficiency of test absorbent was in order of Activated Carbon > Carbonized Cast > Cast.

  • The surface rolling, one of the plastic working processes, provides good surface roughness with the reduction of diameter and the increase of surface hardness. In this study three Nachi 6000ZZ bearing were used for surface rolling on ductile cast iron. The results obtained are as follows; (1) The good surface roughness can be obtained with roller surface radius of curvature of 24mm after the 2nd rolling. (2) The surface roughness of ductile cast iron was 0.48.mu.mRmax by the contact pressure of 140kgf/mm$^{2}$ and surface hardness was Hv 395 with roller surface radius of curvature of 24mm after the 2nd rolling. (3) The reduction of specimen diameter of ductile cast iron were -12.8.mu.m due to rolling. (4) Within the diameter variation of -11.mu.m, surface roughness and surface hardness were increased, but at the range of exceeding -14.mu.m of the diameter variation the surface roughness became worse and the surface roughness became worse and the surface hardness was increased. (5) Dynamic contact area was about 25% to 30% of static contact area. The calculated contact pressure showed a good agreement with the experimental contact pressure.

  • High speed machining one of the most effectiv to improve machining accuracy and product in dies and mould. But a study on this is limited to Alumium, light metal etc. This paper presents machining characteristic of gray cast iron in high speed machining with tungsten carbide endmill. It is suggested to measure sutting force, tool wear, surface roughness, surface shape and select of cptimal cutting condition in the high speed machining of gray cast iron. Performance of high speed machine tool was estimated and the relationship between cutting phenomenon and machinabillity was described.

  • In mountainous area with high relief, topography may cause cast shadows due to the blocking of direct solar radiation. Remote sensing images of these landscapes display reduced values of reflectance for shadowed areas compared to non-shadowed areas with similar surface cover characteristics. A variety of approaches are possible, though a common step in various active approaches is first to delineate the shadows using automated algorithm and digital surface model (or digital elevation model). This articles demonstrates a common confusion caused by cast shadows

  • The cast iron cylinder liner of the marine engine must be scrapped after its inner surface was definitely worn out due to the friction between the surface and piston ring during the operating. In this research, the restoring method of the worn out cast iron cylinder liner are discussed based on the results of experimental work of the thermal plastic deformation technique.

  • During casting of A390 billet by Hot Top process, bosses were formed on the surface of cast bar. The formation of boss is assumed due to a large amount of latent heat released during the formation of primary Si in A390 alloy. The low melting point elements around primary Si are locally remelted to liquid and interdendrite offers a path by which the liquid can pass through to the surface. Addition of Sr decreases the amount of latent heat by preventing the formation of primary Si near the surface and thus suppresses the formation of boss on the surface of cast bar. Therefore, the formation of boss could be reduced remarkably when the casting condition was selected to extract the latent heat outward easily.

  • The surface treatments. Chrome/Manganese and Modified Chrome Pickle, that are treated to improve the anti-corrosion property which is needed to increased the probability of prototype product enabled the sand cast Magnesium test specimens to have better corrosion resistance than non-treated one. Sand cast Magnesium specimens which was treated only with chemical conversion coating had same corrosion resistance with the Steel specimens plated by Zinc, and the another one that had the finishing treatment(painting) worked on the chemical surface treatment had the corrosion resistance property to meet to FPO-3 requirement. We also investigated the multiple finishing system(chemical surface treatment + 3 coating) to test the severe condition that magnesium should to endure.

  • This paper presents the analyzing method for surface temperature distribution of a cast-resin transformer. For the study, the surface temperature of the transformer winding was measured and analyzed by a infrared thermography system. Alternating voltages were applied to simulate deterioration of the specimen transformer, and the hot-spot on the transformer surface was measured to analyze the condition for the winding. The hot line condition measured to the changes in surface temperature using infrared thermography camera and was set up the based of diagnostic method of the electric power apparatus. The results ould show the possibility of remote diagnosis using internet.
