Poor Custodial Grandparents' Life Story and Care-giving Experiences of Their Grandchildren (저소득층 조손가족 조부모의 인생이야기와 손자녀 양육경험)

  • This study examined poor custodial grandparents' life story and care-giving experiences of their grandchildren. 8 grandparents were selected and in-depth interview and participant observation method were used. They showed a miserable life from the birth and discriminative experience of the deprivation of educational opportunities as childhood nadir experiences. They showed the regret for their inability as youth/midlife low point and financial difficulty as old life nadir experiences. In terms of care-giving experiences of their grandchildren, they showed non-voluntary care-giving, anxiety for the generational continuation of hardship, and lack of familial assistance. Poor custodial grandparents also used family-centered value, community-based social assistance, and self-assurance through their sacrifice as their adjustment strategy. Several research themes such as the importance of basic trust in childhood, the experience of financial difficulties, the importance of community-based social assistance, and self-assurance through their sacrifice were suggested for further research.

Korean Immigrant Elderly's Generativity and Care-giving Experiences of Their Grandchildren (재미한인노인의 생성감과 손자녀 양육경험)

  • This study examined Korean immigrant elderly's generativity and care-giving experiences of their grandchildren according to their level of generativity. In-depth interview and participant observation method were used. First, this study used Loyola Generativity Scale in order to find Korean immigrant elderly's generativity level. 4 grandparents were selected as a group of low generativity level and 4 grandparents as high level. Grandparents with low generativity level showed non-voluntary care-giving, severe care-giving stress, guilty feeling for their adult children and shame for their ancestors, anxiety for the unstable future, lack of self-care, and lack of social assistance. Grandparents with high generativity level showed voluntary care-giving, positive reaction for the reversed parental care, feeling of usefulness for care-giving, hope for the future, existence of self-care, and existence of social assistance. Further discussion and suggestions were made from the study results.

The care giving experience of middle-aged child care providers (중년기 아이돌보미 여성의 돌봄활동 경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore middle-aged child care providers' experience in caring for children in the community. Methods: The participants were 10 middle-aged child care providers. In-depth interviews were conducted between August and September, 2014 until data. Colaizzi's method of data analysis was applied to inductively determine themes and formulated meanings. Data saturation was achieved and methodological rigor was established Results: Four themes were extracted from 12 meanings. The four themes of the child care providers' experience in caring for children were: 1) weariness from care-giving, 2) the search for one's own solutions, 3) a cheerful attitude to life, 4) the opportunity to start a new life. Conclusion: The results of this study provide useful information for understanding child care providers' experiences in caring for children and establishing effective strategies to support these child care providers.

Experiences of Nurses Who Provide Childbirth Care for Women with Multi-cultural Background (간호사의 다문화 여성 출산간호 경험)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the experiences of nurses in health care of women with multi-cultural background. The structure of these experiences was identified in a social-cultural context. Methods: Data were collected by means of in-depth interviews using tape-recordings from 16 participants who were providing childbirth care for culturally different women. A phenomenological method proposed by Colaizzi was used to guide the process of data analysis. Results: A total of 138 significant statements were extracted from the data resulting in nine themes and five theme clusters. Theme clusters that emerged from the data were: more in-depth cultural difference, difficulty in providing care in multi-cultured, sticking to care in our own way, not being ready to nurse, and accepting culturally different woman, such as a Korean woman. Conclusion: The findings suggest that systematic educational programs for enhancement of cultural competency and its support systems should be developed for Korean nurses. Useful materials on Korean childbirth care should also be provided to women giving birth.

Meaning of Student Teaching Experiences in Daycare Centers for Toddler (영아반 보육실습 체험에 대한 의미)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a better understanding of prospective teachers' experiences during their toddler educaring practicum and what the meanings of their experiences are. A narrative study on practicum experiences was conducted with four junior students who major in early childhood education in A university in Seoul. The experiences of prospective teachers in daycare centers for toddler were diverse. Such diverse experiences allowed teachers to find the meaning of the relationship between teacher and toddler and to learn what being a teacher was like. And they showed positive changes in their attitude toward practicum and becoming toddler care and education teachers following improved understanding about the lives and development of toddlers and care-giving and teaching skills. The meaning of toddler educaring practicum was explained as building justification for existence and essential identity through continuous self-reflection, and experiencing happiness of caring and teaching toddlers. During the practice, they also learned that teachers in charge of toddlers should understand their lives, provide child friendly and stable environments, and be receptive and sensitively respond to them according to their needs and developmental levels. Student teachers realized that their role was to give loving care and to have sincere concern about the lives of toddlers.

The Experience of Transition in Pregnancy and Childbirth among the Married Immigrant Women in Korea (결혼이주 여성의 임신.출산을 통한 삶의 전환 체험)

  • Purpose: This study was to provide understanding of the meaning of the transition experiences in pregnancy and childbirth among the married immigrant women. Methods: Data was collected through a face-to-face interview from 11 married immigrant women. Their conjugal lives were followed using the hermeneutics phenomenological method developed by van Manen: focusing on the meaning of lived experience. Results: The essential themes that were associated with the transition experiences of the participants' lives during pregnancy and childbirth were as follows: "entering a strange world filled with chaos and tension where they feel like outsiders", "being pregnant and giving birth in increasingly difficult times", "giving birth to a child, which strengthens them to persevere through painful life experiences", "receiving greater support from their families". Conclusion: It contributes a deeper understanding of the essence of the transition experiences of married immigrant women who undergo pregnancy and childbirth after immigration. On the basis of this understanding, this study would be likely to highlight the importance of establishing an appropriate health and medicare systems and the expert network of nursing care for immigrant wom.

The Meaning of Death for Korean in View of Novel and End Stage Cancer Patient

  • Every one experiences death one day, however no one can hows exactly what it is because people can not experience death until it comes, it is therefore impossible to judge correctly on the phenomenon of the death. On the whole, man experiences indirect death through the mass communications such as TV drama, fiction, magazine etc because those methods can easily access by every one. In addition to this, people usually acquire the negative awareness of death through the dramatic change of story like dying of cancer for dramatic effect by giving scare and fear to the cancers. The purpose of this study is to provide basic information on the spiritual care that enables the facing death patients to accept death as a part of life and divert hope from scare about after death by comparing and analyzing of two aspects of death meaning i.e, Korean fiction and the end stage cancer patients. Additionally, for medical staff to understand the facing death cancer patients by making to aware patients correctly and provide the better quality of care. The study was performed from September 28, 2002 to February, 28, 2003. The materials of this study were collected by direct data obtained from observation, interviews, note and diary of end stage of cancer patients and written materials acquired from Korean contemporary fiction. Participants of this study were 4 end stage cancer patients including 2 lung cancer patients, 1 liver cancer patient and 1 esophagus cancer patient. The methodology used in this study was divided into two types; Huberman & Miles methodology was used for fiction to find and categorize subject, and Colaizzi, one of phenomenological methodology was used for end stage cancer patients to find the major meaning, subject and categorization. A Qualitative Study on the Experiences of Mothers Who Have Abandoned Their Additional Birth Plans (후속 출산을 포기한 한 자녀 어머니들의 임신·출산 및 양육경험에 대한 질적 분석)

  • Objective: The present study aimed to explore the experiences of mothers who have abandoned their additional birth plans since their first child was born. Methods: During in-depth interviews, mothers were asked to recall their own experiences of motherhood. The interview data were analyzed using the grounded theory. Results: The central phenomenon was 'The burden of raising a child is too heavy for mothers to carry alone.' The causal conditions were 'First experience: Unpredictable life', 'Physical and psychological difficulty', and 'Spouse's absence.' The contextual conditions were 'Expectations and reality of parenting' and 'Workplace conditions.' The mothers used interaction strategies of 'Defusing conflict only on a surface level: Giving up', 'Reliance on grandmothers', and 'Downgrading career aspirations.' These strategies were mediated by intervening conditions, 'Stereotypes and experiences of non-family nanny', 'Child's development', and 'Family conflict.' The results were 'Endless guilt', 'Ambivalence between independence versus interdependence' and 'Unfairness: Why only me?' Finally, the process of psychological conflict was identified to account for the steps leading mothers to give up on their birth plans. Conclusion/Implications: During the first experience of motherhood, mothers' conflict gets escalated despite their struggles. These experiences might discourage their additional birth plans. These results provide implications for policies to increase fertility rates.

아동간호학 임상실습 교육의 방향

  • This research was an attempt to restructure the curriculum of pediatric clinical education on the base of the analysis of the pediatric clnical experience of nursing students acquired according to the traditional hospital-based pediatric clinical education and the evaluation of its results. As the focus of health care changes, pediatric clinical education the future necessitates changes in the traditional clinical experince at all levels. The traditional concentration of clinical experience within an acute care setting must be restructured to include the expanding future roles of the nurse and the changes in the health care structure. In order to meet the need for restructuring, it is inevitably necessary to adopt an organizational design for pediatric clinical experience that is not all traditional. The additional experiences and variety of settings will enhance the quality of pediatric clinical experience. And as a matter of course this organizational change will enhance the student learning experience by giving them the opportunity to observe normal growth and development, preventive health care measures, and the role of the nurse outside the acute care setting. As the nursing's focus changes to meet the challenges of the future the faculty must apply themselves to these changes to prepare students for the future. Students must be ready to fill the many roles that nurses will hold in the future.

Analysis of Nurturing Experiences Mothers whose Children have Borderline Intellectual Functioning Disorder (경계선 지적기능 아동을 둔 어머니의 양육 경험에 관한 연구)

  • The major purpose of this study was to explore care giving experiences of mothers, who have their children with borderline intellectual functioning disorder. The core analytical strategy was to find out the essential meaning of caring their children. For this purpose, eight mothers were participated in depth interview, which conducted during October, 2011 through July 2012. The face-to-face interview repeated two or three times based on phenomenological perspective. The interview suggested two major findings: changing mother's view from raising retarded children to caregiving a child with growing-up substantially slow speed; the essence of nurturing experiences for mothers, whose children have borderline intellectual functioning, was to watching with attention rather than advocating ownership. This result can be also found in Barshow's concept of 'watching' rather than 'possession', which is suggested by Tennyson. However, the essential meaning of this concept was associated with 'watching with care', which was originated form Goethe's notion of 'existence'. Mother's of children with borderline intellectual functioning have reached a point of view: when creating a parent-child relationship, it was essential that the child was not 'my child', but was 'a child' per se. This type of parent-child relationship was a result of giving up a desire that the child raised within mother's boundary. It was also a result of psychological warfare and conflict in mother's mind. To internalized this view, it is recommended that the mothers implement the following three perspectives: first, the mothers put down overly-pushed motive toward their children; second, they enhance their level of understanding toward their child; third, it is necessary that the mothers build a new sense of existence through matching their level of concern with their children.
