Epitaxial Growth of $\beta$-SiC Thin Films on Si(100) Substrate without a Carburized Buffer Layer

  • Most of heteroepitaxial $\beta$-SiC thin films have been successfully grown on Si(100) adapting a carburizing process, by which a few atomic layers of substrate surface is chemically converted to very thin SiC layer using hydrocarbon gas sources. Using an organo-silicon precursor, bis-trimethylsilymethane (BTMSM, [$C_7H_{20}Si_2$]), heteropitaxial $\beta$-SiC thin films were successfully grown directy on Si substrate without a carburized buffer layer. The defect density of the $\beta$-SiC thin films deposited without a carburized layer was as low as that of $\beta$-SiC films deposited on carburized buffer layer. In addition, void density was also reduced by the formation of self-buffer layer using BTMSM instead of carburized buffer layer. It seems to be mainly due to the characteristic bonding structure of BTMSM, in which Si-C was bonded alternately and tetrahedrally (SiC$_4$).

첨탄기어의 피로강도에 미치는 표면이상층의 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effect of Non-martensitic Layer on the Fatigue Strength in Carburized Gears)

  • This study deals with the effect on non-martensitic layer on the fatigue strength in carburized gear. The test gears are carburized, then treated by the combination of chemical polishing and electro-polishing. Carburization treatment is used widely on parts of power transmission system like surface hardened layer to improve fatigue strength. Carburized gears are observed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) to determine the characteristics of crack initiation mechanism in the surface layer. The constant street amplitude fatigue test is performed by using and electro-hydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester. The S-N curves are obtained and illustrated. The effect of non-martensitic layer on the fatigue strength is clarified.

침탄처리한 SCM420H의 미끄럼 마모 특성에 미치는 침탄 조건의 영향 (Effects of Carburizing Process on Sliding wear Behavior of Carburized SCM420H Steel)

  • The effects of the carburizing process on the sliding wear behavior of SCM420H steel have been investigated. In particular, the effects of grain boundary corrosion observed in the surface layer after gas carburizing and the effects of hardness of the carburized cases after heat-treatment on the sliding wear properties were examined. Pin specimens carburized by two methods (gas carburizing and vacuum carburizing) were tempered at two temperatures of 180℃ and 400℃ after oil-quenching, respectively. Sliding wear tests were carried out against heattreated SKH51 steel at several sliding speeds using a pin-on-disc type test machine. As results, it can be found that there is no difference in the wear behavior between the pins carburized using two methods. This implies that the grain boundary corrosion that formed in the surface layer after gas carburizing has no effect on the sliding wear behavior of carburized SCM420H steels. Additionally, there is no significant difference in the wear behavior between carburized pins tempered at 400℃ and at 180℃ after oil-quenching, regardless of the carburizing method. This is because carburized pins tempered at 400℃ have a troostite structure, which exhibits higher tribochemical reactivity even though its hardness is lower than that of martensite structure. In this respect, it can be considered that good wear resistance of carburized cases is maintained at least until the effective case depth.

플라즈마 침탄한 저탄소 Cr-Mo강의 피로특성에 관한 연구 (A study on fatigue properties of plasma carburized low carbon Cr-Mo steel)

  • 플라즈마 침탄한 저 탄소 Cr-Mo 강(0.176C-1.014Cr-0.387Mo)의 침탄 특성과 피로성질을 고찰하였다. 플라즈만 침탄한 시편의 유효경화깊이는 가스 침탄한 시편에 대해 상대적으로 침타나시간이 짧고 침탄온도가 낮음에도 불구하고 50%정도까지 증가되었다. 플라즈만 침탄시 유효경화깊이의 증가는 표면탄소농도의 증가와 같은 경향을 보였으며, 표면탄소농도의 증가와 같은 경향을 보였으며, 표면탄소농도의 증가율이 침탄시간의 증가에 따라 감소하였다. 플라즈만 침탄간의 피로한도는 가스 침탄강의 경우보다 높았다. 이를 표면근처의 미세구조, 경화깊이 잔류, 오스테나이트와 압축잔류응력으로 조사한 결과 경화깊이와 압축잔류응력의 차이가 거의 없었다. 따라서 플라즈만 침탄의 피로강도 향상은 가스침탄에 비해 표면이 상승층이 저감되어 표면에서의 미소균열의 발생 및 초기 균열 전파과정이 지연 되어진 것으로 판단된다. 파단면 관찰결과 표면에서 균열이 시작되고 플라즈마 침탄의 경우 입내파괴가 현저하였다.

침탄처리한 Ni-Cr-Mo강의 마찰-마모특성 (Friction-Wear Properties of Carburized SNCM)

  • In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.

  • Hardened layer and compressive residual stress created by carburized treatment effect on bending fatigue strength of gear massively. Also, shot peening treatment improves the strength of carburized gear as it does the hardness and residual stress of surface layer. In these days shot peening techniques are welcomed as one of physical improvement ways around the surface of materials. It is used widely because qualitative analysis of shot peening has become possible and surface treatment can be done with very little costs compared to other surface improvement methods. Therefore this study investigates the effect of shot peening in surface shape and bending fatigue strength after doing many kinds of shot peening treatments, then doing fatigue test and also explained characteristics of shot peening gear.

  • The influence of acetylene flow rates on the carburizing behavior of an AISI 4115 steel in 1 ton-class mass production-type vacuum carburizing furnace has been studied through microstructure, carbon concentration, hardness analyses. The AISI 4115 steels were carburized with various flow rates (20, 32.7, 60 l/min) and locations in the furnace (top, center, bottom) at 950℃. The acetylene flow rate played an important role in controlling the carburizing properties of carburized samples, such as effective case depth and uniformity carburizing according to location in the furnace. At an acetylene flow rate of 20 l/min, the carburized samples had a shallow average hardened layer (0.645 mm) compared to the target hardening depth (1 mm) due to low carbon flux and spatial uniformity of carburization (17.8%) in the furnace. At a flow rate of 60 l/min, the carburized samples showed an average hardened layer (1.449 mm) deeper than the target hardening depth and had the spatial uniformity of carburization (98.8%). In particular, at a flow rate of 32.7 l/min, the carburized samples had an average hardened layer (1.13 mm) close to the target hardening depth and had the highest carburizing uniformity (99.1%). As a result, an appropriate flow rate of 32.7 l/min was derived to satisfy the target hardening depth and to have spatial uniform hardened layer in the furnace.

소실모형구조법에 의한 탄소강주강 제조시의 Carbon Pick-up 현상 (Carbon Pick-up Phenomena in Plain Carbon Steel by Evaporative Pattern Casting Process)

  • It has been a major concern in the foundry that steel castings manufactured by the evaporative pattern casting process encounter the carbon pick-up problem. A carbon rich layer at the evaporative pattern cast surface is a result of interactions between the gaseous products from foamed polystyrene and the molten metal. The carburized layer with a high hardness makes it difficult to machine the casting. In this study, the influence of the density of EPS pattern and coatings on carbon pick-up phenomena of S25C and S45C commercial carbon cast steel were investigated. As the density of EPS pattern is increased, the carbon concentration of decomposed pattern is increased and the thickness of carburized layer at the surface of steel castings is increased. Also as the density of coatings is increased, the permeability of coatings is decreased and the thickness of carburized layer at the surface of steel castings is increased. S25C steel which has lower original carbon content compared to S45C steel exhibited severe carburization.

The Effects of Gas Compositions During Post Nitriding on the AISI 316L Stainless Steel after Plasma Carburizing

  • In this experiment, post-nitriding treatment was performed at $400^{\circ}C$ on AISI 316 stainless steel which was plasma carburized previously at $430^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours. Plasma nitriding was implemented on AISI 316 stainless steel at various gas compositions (25% $N_2$, 50% $N_2$ and 75% $N_2$) for 4 hours. Additionally, during post nitriding Ar gas was used with $H_2$ and $N_2$ to observe the improvement of surface properties. After treatment, the behavior of the hybrid layer was investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-hardness testing. Potentiodynamic polarization test was also used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. Meanwhile, it was found that the surface hardness increased with increasing the nitrogen gas content. Also small percentage of Ar gas was introduced in the post nitriding process which improved the hardness of the hardened layer but reduced the corrosion resistance compared with the carburized sample. The experiment revealed that AISI 316L stainless steel showed better hardness and excellent corrosion resistance compared with the carburized sample, when 75% $N_2$ gas was used during the post nitriding treatment. Also addition of Ar gas during post nitriding treatment degraded the corrosion resistance of the sample compared with the carburized sample.
