We analyzed the basic characteristics and adsorption property of carbonized materials from thinning byproducts of major Korean wood species for evaluating as charcoal making raw material. Yield of charcoal was decreased with increasing the carbonization temperature for all wood species. Refining degrees was 9.0 at $400^{\circ}C$, 3.3~5.0 at $600^{\circ}C$ and 0 at $800^{\circ}C$, and was no difference among wood species. With increasing the carbonization temperature, the fixed carbon content was also increased, and charcoal from softwoods had more fixed carbon content than that from hardwoods. Specific surface area was increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, softwood charcoal had more specific surface area than that of hardwood. Pinus rigida showed the highest specific surface area. In formaldehyde removal by charcoal, some materials had highest at $600^{\circ}C$ and the others had highest at $800^{\circ}C$. Pinus koraiensis, Qurcus acutissima and MDF showed maximum formaldehyde removal ability at $600^{\circ}C$. Ethylene gas removal ability of charcoal was increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, and the charcoal from Pinus rigida and Robinia pseudoacacia had higher ethylene gas removal ability than the other species.
Hybrid hydrothermal carbonization (Hybrid HTC) technology is a proprietary thermochemical process for two or more organic wastes. The reaction time is less than two hours with temperature range 180~250℃ and pressure range 20~40bar. Thanks to accumulation of the carbon of the waste during Hybrid HTC process, the energy value of the solid fuel increases significantly with comparatively low energy consumption. It has also a great volume reduction with odor removal effect so that it is evaluated as the best solid fuel conversion technology for various organic wastes. In this study of the hybrid hydrothermal carbonization, the effect on the calorific value and yield of Cambodian mango waste were evaluated according to changes in temperature and reaction time. Through the study, parameter optimization has been sought with improving energy efficiency of the whole plant. It is decomposed in the Hydro-Carbonation Technology to Generate Gas. At this time, it is possible to develop manufacturing and production technologies such as hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4). Based on the results of the study, a pilot plant (2t/day) has been proposed for future commercialization purpose along cost analysis, mass balance and energy balance calculations.
To investigate the pyrolytic and anatomical characteristics of Korean softwood, Pinus densi-flora, Pinus rigida and Larix leptolepis, and hardwood, Acer palntatum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Quercus variabilis, chemical components analysis, TG-DTA (Thermogravimetric Analysis & Differential Thermal Analysis), MBA (Methylene Blue Adsorption) test and SEM observation were carried out. For TG-DTA, samples were carbonized up to $800^{\circ}C$ at the heating rate of $10^{\circ}C$/min under $N_2$ flows 1 l/min using thermogravimetric analyzer. Chemical component analysis of all samples resulted in typical contents of major wood component. In TG-DTA results, softwood showed higher char yield than hardwood, and lignin displayed the highest char yield among the major wood components. All samples showed typical TGA, DTG and DTA curves for wood pyrolysis except a few differences between softwood and hardwood. Content of lignin influenced its pyrolysis characteristics, while molecular structure of lignin affected not only the weight loss but also the yield of char. In MBA test results, MBA of softwoods was higher than that of hardwoods. Char of Pinus densiflora showed the highest MBA, but its degree was lower than activated carbon or fine charcoal about 23 and 4 times, respectively. SEM observation showed carbonization process preserves wood structure and retain the micro-structure of wood fibers.
Using Na2CO3 versus NaCl as chemical activator, we compared the quality of activated carbon produced from oil palm fronds as raw material. These activators were selected for comparison because both are readily available and are environmentally friendly. In the manufacturing, we used Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-3730-1995) parameters. For the quality comparison, we determined activated-carbon yield, moisture, ash, volatiles, and fixed-carbon contents; and adsorption capacity of iodine. The best characteristics, assessed by morphological surface analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral analysis, were observed in the carbon activated by Na2CO3 at an activator concentration of 10% and carbonization temperature of 400 ℃. The results were as follows: activated-carbon yield, 84%; water content, 8.80%; ash content, 2.20%; volatiles content, 14.80%; fixed-carbon content, 68.60%; and adsorption capacity of iodine, 888.51 mg/g. Identification using the FTIR spectrophotometer showed the presence of the functional groups O-H, C=O, C=C, C-C, and C-H in the Na2CO3-activated carbon.

The purpose of this study is to process a seaweed resources that is easy to find in Korea and has outstanding phlogistone and high yield seaweed vinegar solution through mass-production and facility development for utilization. The compound uses wasted seaweeds, such as brown seaweed, kelp, seaweed fusiform, and laver, and carbonizes them in high temperature by drying in poly step trap to extract them. In also involves the development of a process that separates and refines the extracts to create a high value-added anti-bacterial bio solution that can replace chemicals in agriculture and industries and even chemical food additives. so, studied separation and refining of seaweed extracts to analyze the compounds. and processed and compared to seaweed vinegar extracts to prove superiority.
When processing the biomass by Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), a slow pyrolysis process, it produces bio-gas, biooil, and biochar. Among these end products, biochar is known for isolating or storing carbon and being used as a soil amendment. In this study, the characteristics of biochar generated by HTC at $250^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, and 20 hours with synthetic food wastes and wood wastes were analyzed for potential uses in soil contaminated with heavy metals. The yield of biochar (weight %) increased when the ratio of wood wastes increased and showed a decreasing tendency as reaction time increased. Elemental analysis of biochar based on various conditions showed a maximum of 70% carbon (C) content. The carbon content showed an increasing tendency with the increase of wood wastes. Iodine adsorption test was peformed to determine the optimum reaction condition, which was 15% wood waste for mixing ratio and 2 hours for reaction time. Using biochar generated at the optimum condition, its capability of adsorbing heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni) was evaluated. It was concluded that lead (Pb) was removed efficiently while zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) were hardly adsorbed by biochar.

In this study, cellulose nanoplates (CNPs) were fabricated using cellulose nanocrystals obtained from commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Their pyrolysis behavior and the characteristics of the product carbonaceous materials were investigated. CNPs showed a relatively high char yield when compared with MCC due to sulfate functional groups introduced during the manufacturing process. In addition, pyrolyzed CNPs (CCNPs) showed more effective chemical activation behavior compared with MCC-induced carbonaceous materials. The activated CCNPs exhibited a microporous carbon structure with a high surface area of 1310.6 m2/g and numerous oxygen heteroatoms. The results of this study show the effects of morphology and the surface properties of cellulose-based nanomaterials on pyrolysis and the activation process.
In the PAN-based ACF manufacturing system stabilization step was improved with chemical treatment (preoxidation) in order to yield higher carbon content and to avoid excessive fragmentation during carbonization and activation process. The optimal condition of preoxidation was at 18$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 minutes in sodium glyceroxide in glycerine (concentration of NaOH was 0.02 meq/g). To investigate low temperature stabilization effect, preoxidized PAN fiber heated 22$0^{\circ}C$ to 26$0^{\circ}C$ as a function of treatment time and oxidative gas atmosphere, and analysed by infrared spectrum and TGA. As a results of IR and TGA, it was clear that impregnated[preoxidative] PAN had 14% higher residual than untreated PAN at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and the optimal condition of stabilization was at 26$0^{\circ}C$ for 3.5 hours within $N_2$ atmosphere.

$TiO_2$-containing pitch fibers were prepared and various stabilization variables were investigated by characterizations of the fibers and behaviors of $TiO_2$ particles in the optimum stabilization conditions. When pitch fiber was stabilized by air at the optimum condition, the fiber weight increased as an increase of the stabilization temperature and a decrease of $TiO_2$ concentration. The carbonization yield was 71~82 wt.%, showing a decrease of the yield with the $TiO_2$ increase caused by the catalytic activity of $TiO_2$ to combustion. During the stabilization, newly developed carbonyl and carboxyl groups were introduced on the fiber surface and cross-linking reactions were progressed resulting the thermosetting property, which was verified by the replacement of hydrogen with oxygen. Pore size of the activated carbon fiber was increased by an increase in $TiO_2$ concentration. In the considerations of the aggregation behaviors of the $TiO_2$ particles, the optimum stabilization conditions of 0.5 wt.% $TiO_2$ containing petroleum-based pitch fiber were suggested as $280^{\circ}C$, 3 hr.
In order to control the micro-pore structure of glassy carbon (GC), an activation agent of KOH was introduced as the glassy carbon was prepared from phenolic resin with a curing agent of phosphoric acid. The yield and properties of GC were investigated as a function of KOH content. Although the GC produced without KOH had nonporous structure except the trace of bubble formation, the GC with KOH had very porous structure. The surface area of GC with KOH increased continuously up to 870 $m^2$/g with the increase of KOH content. The carbonization yield and apparent density measured in water reduced from 40 to 15% and iron 1.5 to 0.9 g/$cm^3$, respectively, and the electrical resistivity increased from $50{\times}10^{-4}$ to $60{\times}10^{-4}$$\Omega$.cm with the increase of KOH content.
