In steel industries, cold-rolled sheet manufacturing is one of the links between the front and rear important industries for national competitiveness and high value-added production. In particular, in small and medium-sized enterprises, one of the major problems is the carbonization phenomenon of the steel sheet during the annealing process. Carbonization occurring on the surface of the coil help reduce steel production. After conducting various experiments to identify the cause of carbonization on the surface of a cold-rolled steel, the following results were obtained: (1) An analysis of the rolling oil, which is used in the field, revealed it to contain approximately 40 ppm carbonized material. (2) A comparison of the thermal denaturation characteristics of the fresh rolling oil and using rolling oil by FT-IR analysis showed that thermal denaturation had occurred, as shown by the significant decrease in the relative intensity of the 2900 and $1750cm^{-1}$ peaks. (3) The thermal decomposition of the rolling oil took place for the rolling oil at approximately $220^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, annealing experiments at $200^{\circ}C$ showed that the carbonization phenomenon of the sample was not observed. On the other hand, carbonization was observed at temperatures higher than $240^{\circ}C$.

Although there has been an upcoming recognition in the repairing reinforcement and remodeling of currently existing buildings with a regard to economic and resource saving effects of buildings roughly exposed to the open air for a long-term period, followed by a number of problems with the construction business operations that support economy-oriented projects within the limits of their short-term period durability, it is true that reasonable decisions of concrete performance are insufficient owing to the lack of proper history management for those existing buildings. This research attempted to comparatively analyze the compression strength together with investigation of carbonization depth and alkali concentration according to the passage of years on the subjects of aged buildings, and to provide basic data for remodeling and/or reconstruction of future construction structures by indirectly estimating durability lifetime expectancy according to carbonization phenomenon.

The International Energy Agency(IEA) recommends that intergovernmental agreements reduce CO2 emissions by 2050 to about 50% in 2005 in its report. To realize these demands, it is suggested to actively utilize energy efficiency improvement technology, renewable energy, nuclear power, carbon dioxide capture & storage technology (CCS). In the field of building materials and cement, mineral carbonization technology is widely used. Inorganic by-products applicable to greenhouse gas storage include waste concrete, slag, coal ash, and gypsum. If the Mineral Carbonation Act is used, it is expected that about 12 million tons of greenhouse gases can be immobilized every year. Greenhouse gas immobilization using cement hydrate can be immobilized by injecting carbon dioxide into the hydrated products C-S-H, and Ca(OH)2. In the case of immobilization through concrete carbonization, a carbon dioxide promotion test is used, which is often different from the actual carbon dioxide carbonization reaction. If the external carbon dioxide concentration is abnormally higher than the reality, it is thought that it will be different from the actual reaction. In this study, the carbonation phenomenon according to the concentration and identification of the carbon dioxide reaction mechanism of cement hydrate was to be considered.

Properties and chemical bonding of wood charcoal were investigated to understand the chemistry occurring in wood carbonization. From the pH changes of wood charcoal, it is revealed that it becomes acidic to weakly basic for charcoal carbonized at about $300^{\circ}C$, whereas it turns to basic at higher carbonization temperature higher than $600^{\circ}C$. Also, the ratio of carbon atoms in the charcoal was increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, while those of oxygen and hydrogen atoms. This tendency was significant when the carbonization temperature was increased up to $600^{\circ}C$ and the ratio changes of the atoms became stable at above $600^{\circ}C$. In the changes of chemical bonding, the ratio of C-C bonding was increased and those of C-O-H and C-O-R bonding was decreased significantly. It is considered that bondings connected to oxygen atoms tends to be broken, and the ratio of C-C bonding increased. Consequently, it is expected that this change may causes occurrence of new functional groups. In addition to that, it seems to be that the chemical bondings undergo the partial decomposition, formation, and recombination steps, Because ratio of C=O bonding tended to be increased or decreased by increasing the carbonization temperature. This understanding of chemical bond changes in charcoal can be a compensative consideration on the knowledges made only by physical parameters in the properties of micro-pore which has limited to explain the phenomenon. Also, it is considered that this can be treated as a basic knowledge for upgrading and development of use of wood charcoal.

Glass-like carbon precursors shrink significantly during curing and carbonization, which leads to crack formation and bending. Cured furan resin powder and ethanol were added to furan resin to diminish the weight loss, to suppress the shrinkage and bending, and to readily release the gases evolved during polymerization and curing. Curing and carbonization were controlled by pressure and slow heating to avoid damage to the samples. The effect of the filler and ethanol on the fabrication process was examined by measuring the properties of the glass-like carbon, such as the specific gravity, bending strength, electrical resistivity, and microstructural change. The specific gravities of the filler-added glass-like carbons were higher than those of the ethanol-added samples because of the formation of macropores from the vaporization of ethanol during the curing and polymerization processes. Although the ethanol-added glass-like carbons exhibited lower bending strengths after carbonization than did the filler-added samples, the opposite result was observed after aging at 2,600$^{\circ}C$. We found that the macropores created from ethanol were contracted and removed upon heat treatment. The electrical resistivity of the glass-like carbon aged at 2,600$^{\circ}C$ was lower than those of the samples carbonized at 1,000$^{\circ}C$. We attribute this phenomenon to the fact that aging at high temperature led to well-developed microstructures, the removal of macropores, and the reduction of the surface area.
Tracking, which is one of the main causes of electrical fires, is perceived as a physical phenomenon of electrical discharge. Hence tracking should be explained based on electric field analysis, conduction path by electron generation, and gas discharge physics. However, few papers have considered these details. This paper proposes a tracking mechanism including their effects on tracking progress. In order to prove this mechanism, a tracking experiment, an electric field analysis for the carbonization evolution model, and an explanation of the tracking process by gas discharge physics were conducted. From the tracking experiment, the current waveforms were measured at each stage of the tracking progress from corona discharge to tracking breakdown. The electric field analysis was carried out in order to determine the electric field on the surface of a dry-band and the high electric field region for electron generation during the generation and progress of carbonization. In this paper, the proposed tracking mechanism consisted of six stages including electron avalanche by corona discharge, accumulation of positive ions, expansion of electron avalanche, secondary electron emission avalanche, streamer, and tracking by conductive path. The pulse current waveforms measured in the tracking experiment can be explained by the proposed tracking mechanism. The results of this study will be used as the technical data to detect tracking phenomenon, which is the cause of electric fire, and to improve the proof tracking index.
Stabilization is a key stage in the production of advanced carbon/carbon composites (ACC) from mesophase pitch, to render the mesophase infusible and the prevention of puffing during the subsequent carbonization. It is generally known that stabilization process as well as properties of mesophase pitch has a great deal of influence on the properties of the resultant ACC. Hence, it is possible to infer the properties of ACC by examing the stabilized mesophase pitch. In this study, extractions by solvents or acidified solvents extraction were carried out from the A-240 petroleum pitch. The extracted pitches were made into mesophase by heat treatments. Oxidative stabilization by air and non-oxidative stabilization by a chemical free radical initiator were performed. When a soluble polymer is fully stabilized, it should become insoluble in solvents. This phenomenon was used to estimated the degree of stabilization. The non-oxygen stabilized mesophase pitch powder was compared with the air stabilized mesophase pitch powder. FTIR provided additional information on the functional groups.
The activated carbon "C" was obtained by carbonization followed by activation with steam at 40% of burn-off. Oxidized carbons C-N, C-P and C-H were obtained by oxidizing the activated carbon C with concentrated nitric acid, ammonium peroxysulfate and hydrogen peroxide, respectively. The textural properties of the carbons were determined from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. The acidic surface functional groups were determined by pH titration, base neutralization capacity and electrophoretic mobility measurements. The cation exchange capacities of un-oxidized and oxidized carbons were determined by the removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from their aqueous solutions. The surface area and the total pore volume decreased but the pore radius increased by the treatment of activated carbon with oxidizing agents. These changes were more pronounced in case of oxidation with $HNO_3$. The surface pH of un-oxidized carbon was basic whereas those of the oxidized derivative were acidic. The removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) was pH dependent and the maximum removal of the both ions was obtained at pH of 5-6. Cu(II) was more adsorbed, a phenomenon which was ascribed to its particular electronic configuration.
In this study, temperature characteristics and fire damage form were analyzed to investigate flame spreading form and fire probability from ignition sources subject to drivit component materials which is finishing material in architecture. Ignition sources were limited to a gas torch and exterior panel board fire, and the size of the sample was manufacture in 30 cm length ${\times}$ 50 cm height ${\times}$ 5cm thickness size. Marble (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall), marble (inner wall) + 4 mm plaster stone (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit + insulation (outer wall), and gypsum board (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall) were prepared for the sample. As result of the research for temperature characteristics, large temperature difference by each material was shown in $218^{\circ}C{\sim}995^{\circ}C$ at 30 seconds and $501^{\circ}C{\sim}1078^{\circ}C$ at 300 seconds. Especially when the inner wall was a plaster board, lowest temperature of $501^{\circ}C$ was shown at 300 seconds and marble inner wall showed the following lowest temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. Temperature rising over $1000^{\circ}C$ was shown in other materials. Regarding fire damage form, drivit or gypsum board outer wall parts exposed to fire showed combustion and carbonization to show calcination(breaking phenomenon) and influence of heat exposure was higher as calcination became more severe.
This study performed the quantitative distribution analysis of created voids to an insulator when applying general flame and DC short-circuit current to 2.5 $mm^2$ HIV (600 V Grade Heat-Resistant Polyvinyl Chloride Insulated Wires). The diameter of cross-section of HIV normal product and the radius of conductor were measured to be 3.3 mm and 1.8 mm. The exterior of HIV exposed to general flame showed severe carbonization and its interior exhibited voids created by dechlorination reaction. This study observed the characteristics that, when the shortcircuit current applied for 2 seconds from a DC 12 V lead battery, the conductor and neighboring insulator were melted, causing the insulator adhering to the conductor. On average, 87 voids were created on 10 mm of the HIV. The average diameter of voids was 0.25 mm. In addition, it was found that, when the short-circuit current applied for 4 seconds, the interior of insulator in contact with conductor severely carbonized and showed exfoliation phenomenon. On average, 47 voids were created, with more voids at the bottom. The average diameter of voids was 0.20 mm. When the short-circuit current for 6 seconds, most parts of upper part of conductor was carbonized, 20 voids were created. The average diameter of voids was measured to be 0.24 mm. It could be seen that the created voids received little influence by the type of energy source and the number of created voids was reduced as the energy supply time increased.
