  • Currently, extreme weather events such as super typhoon, extreme snowfall, and heat wave are frequently occurring all over the world by natural and human caused factors. After industrial growth in the 1970s, earth's temperature has risen sharply. due to greenhouse effect. Global warming can be attributed to gases emitted from using fossil fuel such as average carbon dioxide, perfluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and methane. Especially, carbon dioxide has the highest composition of about 90%. in the fossile fuel usage emitted gas. Concrete has excellent durability as a building material climate change. However, due to various of physical and chemical environmental effect such as conditions during its curing process, the performance degradation may occur. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes steel corrosion and durability decreases by lowering the alkalinity of concrete. Therefore, in this study, concrete durability performance with respect to carbonation from curing conditions change due to wind speed and sunshine exposure time. Concrete carbonation experiment are performed. using wind speed (0, 2, 4, 6) m/s and sunlight exposure time (2, 4, 6, 8) hrs. Also, performance based evaluation through the satisfaction curve based on the carbonation depth and carbonation rate test results are performed.

  • This study evaluated the durability of high-performance shotcrete mixed in the proper proportions using alkali-free and cement mineral accelerators as a permanent support that maintains its strength for the long term. Durability tests were performed the chloride permeability, repeated freezing and thawing, accelerated carbonation, and the effects of salt environments. Test results showed that all the shotcrete mixes included silica fume had low permeability. In addition, after 300 freeze/thaw cycles, the shotcrete mix had excellent freeze/thaw resistance more than the 85% relative dynamic modulus of elasticity. The accelerated carbonation test results were no effect of accelerator type but, the depth of carbonation was greater in the shotcrete mix containing silica fume. No damage was seen in a salt environments. Therefore, the high performance shotcrete mix proportions used in this study showed excellent durability.

  • Due to the increasing significance of durability, much researches on carbonation, one of the major deterioration phenomena are carried out. However, conventional researches based on fully hardened concrete are focused on prediction of carbonation depth and they sometimes cause errors. In contrast with steel members, behaviors in early-aged concrete such as porosity and hydrates (calcium hydroxide) are very important and may be changed under carbonation process. Because transportation of deteriorating factors is mainly dependent on porosity and saturation, it is desirable to consider these changes in behaviors in early-aged concrete under carbonation for reasonable analysis of durability in long term exposure or combined deterioration. As for porosity, unless the decrease in $CO_2$ diffusion due to change in porosity is considered, the results from the prediction is overestimated. The carbonation depth and characteristics of pore water are mainly determined by amount of calcium hydroxide, and bound chloride content in carbonated concrete is also affected. So Analysis based on test for hydration and porosity is recently carried out for evaluation of carbonation characteristics. In this study, changes in porosity and hydrate $(Ca(OH)_2)$ under carbonation process are performed through the tests. Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) for changed porosity, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) for amount of $(Ca(OH)_2)$ are carried out respectively and analysis technique for porosity and hydrates under carbonation is developed utilizing modeling for behavior in early-aged concrete such as multi component hydration heat model (MCHHM) and micro pore structure formation model (MPSFM). The results from developed technique is in reasonable agreement with experimental data, respectively and they are evaluated to be used for analysis of chloride behavior in carbonated concrete.

  • Metakaolin is a cementitious material for producing high-strength concrete. This material is now used as substitute for silica-fume. In this paper, we did the mechanical and durability test such as compressive/tensile/flexural strength test, chloride ion diffusion, chemical attack and repeated freezing and thawing, carbonation test. In the mechanical tests, 10~15% for binder is optimum substitute rate. And, in the chloride ion diffusion test, according to the increase of substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder, the diffusion coefficient was more reduced. In the chemical attack test, by the filler effect of fine powder such metakaolin and silica-fume, the resistance is more excellent than normal concrete. In the other durability test, the concrete using metakaolin also compared with those of silica-fume substitute concrete. Through these tests, we recognized that metakaolin can be used as a substitute for silica-fume.

  • Recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) made from waste concrete is not a suitable structural material as it has high absorption of cement mortar, which adheres on the aggregate surface and on the tiny cracks thereon. Therefore, when using RCA made from waste concrete, much water must be added with the concrete, and slump loss occurs when transporting. Hence, its workability is significantly worse than that of other materials. In this study, surface of RCA was coated with water-soluble polycarboxylate (PC) dispersant so that its characteristics improved. Each possibility was evaluated: whether its slump loss can be controlled, by measuring its workability based on the elapsed time; and whether it can be used as a structural material, by measuring its strength. Moreover, the carbonation due to cement mortar adhesion was measured through a carbonation test. As a result, RCA coated with PC dispersant was found to be better than crushed coarse aggregate and RCA when the physical properties of the fresh concrete and the mechanical, durability of the hardened concrete were tested.

  • The concrete structures in marine environment has been used type V cement(sulfate-resisting Portland cement), but according to the study results reported recently, the question has been raised for effect of the resistance to salt attack of the concrete using type V cement. It is increased the demands on the use of mineral admixtures such as fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag instead of type V cement in order to improve the durability of concrete structures. Therefore, this study focused on the durability evaluation of concrete containing fly ash under marine environment, and the tests such as salt attack, carbonation, sulfate attack, and freezing-thawing were performed. Test results showed t]hat the resistance to salt attack, sulfate attack and freezing-thawing was improved, and the carbonation was in some disadvantage compared with normal concrete. Nevertheless, the durability of fly ash concrete would be maintained during the service life of structures.
