The weathering characteristics of periodically submerged sedimentary rocks in the Sayeon dam, Ulsan was examined by field work, electron probe micro-analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Analysis of fracture zone and exfoliation showed the submerged sedimentary rocks have undergone severe mechanical weathering. Mechanical weathering in the water-rock interface accelerated chemical weathering, such as dissolution and alteration of the most of minerals except for quartz in the weathering zone. The dissolution of carbonates specially calcite, is remarkable creating the cavities, whereas formation of minerals including clay minerals is not active. The sedimentary rocks have been periodically submerged for a certain period of time, and have repeated freezing and thawing. This mechanical weathering favored infiltration, which accelerated mineral dissolution. The high content of easily soluble carbonate of the sedimentary rocks is likely the major cause of intense chemical weathering. The dissolved elements within the infiltrated water interrupted the occurrence of clay and weathering minerals, and expend fractures by infiltrated water accelerated weathering process.
Our study focuses on upgrading real biogas obtained under Indian scenario using carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology to remove carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and utilize it by forming metal carbonate. Amines such as monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were used to rapidly convert gaseous $CO_2$ to aqueous $CO_2$, and $BaCl_2$ was used as an additive to react with the aqueous $CO_2$ and rapidly precipitating the aqueous $CO_2$. All experiments were conducted at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. We analyzed the characteristics of the $BaCO_3$ precipitates using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy - Energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. The precipitates exhibited witherite morphology confirmed by the XRD results, and FT-IR confirmed that the metal salt formed was $BaCO_3$, and EDS showed that there were no traces of impurities present in it. The quantity of the $BaCO_3$ was larger when formed with DEA. Also, a comparison was done with a previous study of ours conducted in Korean conditions. Finally, we observed that the carbonate obtained using real biogas showed similar properties to carbonates available in the market. An economic analysis was done to show the cost effectiveness of the method employed by us.
In this study, Kaolin was carbonized at 1300~175$0^{\circ}C$ and its constituent mineral change was investigated. Carbonized kaolin at 1$650^{\circ}C$ was mixed with metallic silicon, formed and nitrified at 135$0^{\circ}C$ in N2-NH3 atmosphere. Properties of this product such as porosity, bulk density, MOR, nitrization rate and oxidation resistence were measured, and its mineralogical changes were investigated by XRD. The results were as follows; 1) $\beta$-SiC was initially synthesized at 150$0^{\circ}C$, and its amount was continuously increased with reaction temperature to 1$700^{\circ}C$. 2) At 1$600^{\circ}C$, mullite was rapidly decomposed and the amounts of $\beta$-SiC and $\alpha$-Al2O3 were increased simultaneously. 3) By adding alkali to kaolin, the decomposition temperature of mullite was dropped approximately 10$0^{\circ}C$, but the amount of $\alpha$-SiC was increased. 4) The highest values of their nitrization rate and MOR were obtained at the specimen of 35 wt% metallic silicon in nitrization reaction. 5) It seems that increment of $\alpha$-Si3N4 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 phase during nitrization was due to the decomposition of Al4SiC4 existed in carbonized kaolin. 6) Si3N4 bonded SiC-Al2O3 composite were fabricated from kaolin at relatively low temperature (135$0^{\circ}C$).
Particle crushing is an important and essential factor in interpreting the strength and deformation properties of granular materials in the case of geotechnical problems related to soil crushability. As a recent field problem, the exploitation of offshore oil reserves in tropical and sub-tropical coastal shelf areas has shown that the behaviour of soils containing carbonates is markedly different from predominantly silica sands. In this study, as a first step in making a mechanical framework of granular materials incorporating the soil crushability, single particle fragmentation tests were carried out on four different types of sands in order to clarify the characteristics of the single particle fragmentation strength as related to soil crushability. The single particle strength was considered with the influence of the particle shapes, the amount of mineral components and the particle sizes. The soil particle strength corresponding $D_{50}$ of soil distribution curve has shown the lower value, the more the carbonate component and the more angular the particle shape.
The Cheolam silver deposits are emplaced along the fractures in breccia dike and the Hongjesa granite. Breccia dike contains fragments of late Cretaceous acidic volcanic rocks and other fragments of various rocks distributed in the mine area. Therefore it is presumed that the mineralization was taken place in later than late Cretaceous time. Mineral paragenesis is complicated by multiple episodes of fracturing. Six distinct depositional stages can be recognized: stage I, deposition of base metal sulfides; stage II, deposition of base metal sulfides and silver minerals; stage III, deposition of carbonates; stage IV, deposition of silver minerals and base metal sulfides; stage V, deposition of silver minerals; stage VI, deposition of barren quartz. Silver minerals from the deposits are native silver, acanthite, pyrargyrite, argentian tetrahedrite, stephanite, polybasite, pearceite, allargentum, antimonial silver and electrum. Fluid inclusion studies ware carried out for stage I, II, IV and VI quartz and stage III calcite. Homogenization temperatures for each stage are as follows: stage I, from $225^{\circ}$ to $360^{\circ}C$; stage II, from $145^{\circ}$ to $220^{\circ}C$; stage III, from $175^{\circ}$ to $240^{\circ}C$; stage IV, from $130^{\circ}$ to $185^{\circ}C$; stage VI, from $120^{\circ}$ to $145^{\circ}C$. Salinities of ore fluids were in the range of 4 and 10 wt.% equivalent NaCl over stage I and stage VI. Ore mineralogical data of each stage indicate that temperatures are within the range of homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions and sulfur fugacities declined steadily from $10^{-9.7}atm$. to $10^{-18.7}atm$. through stage I into stage V.
The manganese nodule from the Blake Plateau consists mainly of microcrystalline to cryptocrystalline todorokite, with minor quartz, clays, carbonates and phillipsite. The nodule in cross section shows concentric layers, core structure, unconformity and fissure-filling structure megascopically, and colloform, fragmental and diagenetic textures microscopically. A new classification of colloform textures which are applicable to any nodule of any source shows that the colloform textures consist of three basic textural units: banded, cuspate and globular. They occur independently or in combination with each other to form various types of textures. The presence of three predominant textural types suggests that there are three different major modes of nodule growth which are controlled by physical and chemical environments.

The chemical fixation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates is considered to be one of the most promising way to alleviate global warming and produce fine chemicals. In this work, the catalytic applicability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as porous crystalline materials for the synthesis of five-membered cyclic carbonate from CO2 and epoxides was reviewed. In addition, we have briefly classified the materials based on their different structural features and compositions. The studies revealed that MOFs exhibited good catalytic performance towards cyclic carbonate synthesis because of the synergistic effect between the acid sites of MOFs and nucleophile. Moreover, the effect of structure of designed MOFs and mechanism for the cycloaddition of CO2 were suggested.

It was firstly found in 1st group element. Recently, it has been reported on the improvement of efficiency of the OLEDs by introducing thin layer of some carbonate materials of alkali metal. In order to improve the efficiency of OLEDs which is one of the next generation displays, we have studied the electrical characteristics of the device depending on the thickness ratio of the hole-injection layer to the electron-injection layer. Teflon-AF was used as the hole-injection material, and alkali-metal carbonates of $Li_2CO_3$ were used as the electron-injection materials. To obtain a proper thickness ratio, we manufactured. Four types of devices with the thickness ratio of HIL to EIL were made to be 1 : 4, 2 : 3, 3 : 2, and 4 : 1. The results of electrical and optical properties showed that the device with the thickness ratio of 4 : 1 is the most excellent result. In addition, to prepare a four-layer device by inserting the ${\alpha}$-NPD is a hole transporting material was compared with three-layer element. As a result, the maximum luminance, the maximum luminous efficiency, maximum external quantum efficiency of about 124 [%], 164 [%], 106 [%] improve was confirmed.

Relatively pure YBCO was first synthesized by heating a mixture of metal carbonates at temperatures between 1,000 and 1,300 K, resulting in the reaction: 4BaCO3+Y2(CO3)3+6CuCO3+(1/2-x)O2 → 2YBa2Cu3O7-x+1/3CO2. Modern syntheses of YBCO use the corresponding oxides and nitrates. The superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-x are sensitive to the value of x, i.e., its oxygen content. Only those materials with 0≤x≤0.65 are superconducting below Tc, and when x ~ 0.07, the material superconducts at the highest temperature, i.e., 95 K, or in the highest magnetic fields, i.e., 120 T and 250 T when B is perpendicular and parallel to the CuO2 planes, respectively. In addition to being sensitive to the stoichiometry of oxygen, the properties of YBCO are influenced by the crystallization methods applied. YBCO is a crystalline material, and the best superconductive properties are obtained when crystal grain boundaries are aligned by careful control of annealing and quenching temperature rates. However, these alternative methods still require careful sintering to produce a quality product. New possibilities have arisen since the discovery of trifluoroacetic acid, a source of fluorine that prevents the formation of undesired barium carbonate (BaCO3). This route lowers the temperature necessary to obtain the correct phase at around 700℃. This, together with the lack of dependence on vacuum, makes this method a very promising way to achieve a scalable YBCO bulk.
Researches were carried out to investigate the characteristics and concentration of heavy metal elements of stream water through Dongmyoung abandoned metal mine and soil adjacent to the mine. The pH range of water was 5.9∼7.1 that implies the water environment was acidic to neutral. The contents and distribution aspects of heavy metals in water samples varied with geochemical characteristics of element, but the concentration of heavy metals has the tendency of increase closer to the mine in general. The results of soil analysis show that total heavy metal concentration of agricultural soil near mine was far lower than those of ore tailing and dumping site. Therefore, the effects of the abandoned mine on stream water and agricultural products were supposed to be insignificant, particularly because the portion of absorbed carbonates and reducible fractions among total heavy metal concentration was relatively lower than the other. Since, however total heavy metal concentrations of mining site were relatively higher than those of adjacent region, there is a possibility of heavy metal difussion when the chemical environment of the site changes due to migration of surface and underground water. It is suggested that the preventive measures for water and soil pollution by the heavy metals would be considered around the region.
