Precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC), particularly calcite crystal, is extensively used as a pigment, filler or extender in various industries such as paper, paint, textile, detergents, adhesives, rubber and plastics, food, cosmetics, and biomaterials. PCC is conventionally produced through the gas-liquid carbonation process, which consists on bubbling gaseous $CO_2$ through a concentrated calcium hydroxide slurry. This study is aimed to find some factors for controlling the morphology of engineered PCC in lab-scaled mixing batch. The experimental designs were based on temperature variables, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration, $CO_2$ flow rate, and electrical conductivity. The model of engineered PCC morphology was finally controlled by adjustment of electrical conductivity(6.0~7.0 mS/cm) and $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration(10 g/L). Orthorhombic calcite crystals were mostly created at high concentration and electrical conductivity conditions because the increased ratio of $Ca^{2+}$ and $CO{_3}^{2-}$ ions affects the growth rate of orthorhombic faces. Excess calcium spices were contributed to the growth of faces in calcium carbonate crystal, and the non-stoichiometric reaction was occurred between $Ca^{2+}$ and $CO{_3}^{2-}$ ions during carbonation process.
Bacteria that are resistant to high temperatures and alkaline environments are essential for the biological repair of damaged concrete. Alkaliphilic and halotolerant Bacillus sp. AK13 was isolated from the rhizosphere of Miscanthus sacchariflorus. Unlike other tested Bacillus species, the AK13 strain grows at pH 13 and withstands 11% (w/v) NaCl. Growth of the AK13 strain at elevated pH without urea promoted calcium carbonate (CaCO3) formation. Irregular vaterite-like CaCO3 minerals that were tightly attached to cells were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the presence of CaCO3 around the cell. Isotope ration mass spectrometry analysis confirmed that the majority of CO32- ions in the CaCO3 were produced by cellular respiration rather than being derived from atmospheric carbon dioxide. The minerals produced from calcium acetate-added growth medium formed smaller crystals than those formed in calcium lactate-added medium. Strain AK13 appears to heal cracks on mortar specimens when applied as a pelletized spore powder. Alkaliphilic Bacillus sp. AK13 is a promising candidate for self-healing agents in concrete.
In order to prepare ferroxplana ZnY $(Ba_2Zn_2Fe_{12}O_{22})$, which would be useful for GHz-band communication, the optimum coprecipitation condition of 1 $BaCl_{2-1} Zn(NO_3)_2-6FeCl_3$ in $NaOH-Na_2CO_3$ solution was investigated by use of a new apparatus invented in our laboratory. By freeze-drying and calcining the coprecitated hydroxide-carbonate, the very reactive powder was obtained, from which the synthesis process of ZnY and the other related crystals were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction. In results, it was found that the reactive powder containing ZnY as the major component can be prepared by this method, which may be used in manufacturing the various magnetic cores for the microwave communication.
The tribological properties of ceramics are very important in the application to engineering ceramic parts such as seal rings, pump parts, thread guides, and so on. In this study, the effects of graphite addition on the mechanical and tribological properties of alumina/graphite composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by the adding of graphite powder to the mixture of Al2O3, talc and calcium carbonate. Bending strength, water absorption, friction coefficient, the amount of worn out material at a certain time, and maximum surface roughness(Rmax) of the prepared composites were measured. Crystalline phases and microstructure were examined with XRD and SEM. The melt of Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 system was shown over 10 vol% graphite composition. As the amount of the graphite is increased, needle like crystals of mullite were formed and grown. We obtained the good properties of friction coefficients and wear resistance at the powder composition containing 15 vol% of graphite.
