The growth rate of international aviation is expected to be higher than that of most industries and the proportion of carbon emissions from the aviation industry will become very significant as the year 2050 approaches. Constraining the growth of this industry is not desirable because it is essential for human welfare as well as the development of related industries. However, reduction of carbon due to aviation is not easy because it is difficult to improve fuel efficiency in a significant way. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), which is the main organization responsible for handling this problem, developed a program named CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation). The present study analyzes various strategies for countries and airlines to comply with CORSIA using a fuel-efficient system. We conclude that countries should improve their airspace utilization systems, airport facilities, and air navigation systems. Additionally, based on the results of a flight data analysis, airlines should improve their operational efficiency in terms of operations control, flight operation, and maintenance management.
Now, the world is increasingly anxious about fine dust due to abnormal temperatures caused by global warming and increased yellow dust caused by desertification, and the World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that more than 99% of the world's population is exposed to fine dust. In this situation, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide of the matrix was tested by using expanded graphite, an eco-friendly and porous material, to improve air quality. As a result of the test, since expanded graphite is a material that expands between layers compared to conventional graphite, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide decreases as the replacement rate of expanded graphite increases.
Carbon-supported Pt catalyst systems containing defect adsorption sites on the anode of direct methanol fuel cells were investigated, to elucidate the mechanisms of H2 dissociation and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to determine the effect of defect sites located neighboring to or distant from the Pt catalyst on H2 and CO adsorption properties, based on electronic properties such as adsorption energy and electronic band gap. Interestingly, the presence of neighboring defect sites led to a reduction of H2 dissociation and CO poisoning due to atomic Pt filling the defect sites. At distant sites, H2 dissociation was active on Pt, but CO filled the defect sites to form carbon π-π bonds, thus enhancing the oxidation of the carbon surface. It should be noted that defect sites can cause CO poisoning, thereby deactivating the anode gradually.
To address mounting concerns over global warming, the Paris Agreement was reached in December 2015, which aims to limit the increase in global average temperature. South Korea has set a highly ambitious target to reduce emissions and submitted an Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC). Based on the INDC, we investigated the impact of limiting carbon emissions on the power system and the electricity market in Korea. Through detailed simulations on assumed plausible scenarios, this work highlights a) the effects of different carbon emission targets on the annual carbon emission volumes, generation costs, and carbon price; b) the generation mix changes induced by carbon emission limits; and c) the difference in system marginal price and payments for generator owners that carbon emission constraint creates in electricity markets under three different pricing rules.

This research examined consumption-based carbon emission reduction by nuclear energy consumption and environmental tax while considering the context of trade globalization in the highest five emitter nations from 1990 to 2020. This study used various empirical methodologies, including preliminary analysis to check the stationarity and cointegration, the CS-ARDL for long-run analysis, CCEMG, AMG for robustness, and the D-H causality test for short-term pairwise causation. The results indicated that nuclear energy consumption, environmental tax, and trade globalization help to mitigate consumption-based carbon emissions while economic growth and population density boost carbon emissions. Furthermore, the results also found two-way casual connection exists between nuclear energy consumption, population density, and consumption-based carbon emissions. Thus, the results emphasize the need for government policies that encourage nuclear energy and environmental tax as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and achieve and maintain environmental development.
This study focuses on the fabrication of a WC/Co composite powder from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere for the recycling of WC/Co hardmetal. Mixed powders are manufactured by mechanically milling the oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap and carbon black with varying powder/ball weight ratios. The oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap consists of $WO_3$ and $CoWO_4$. The mixed powder mechanically milled at a lower powder/ball weight ratio (high mechanical milling energy) has a more rapid carbothermal reduction reaction in the formation of WC and Co phases compared with that mechanically milled at a higher powder/ball weight ratio (lower mechanical milling energy). The WC/Co composite powder is fabricated at $900^{\circ}C$ for 6 h from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. The fabricated WC/Co composite powder has a particle size of approximately $0.25-0.5{\mu}m$.
In this study, AlN powder of fine particle size and of high purity was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of monodisperse, spherical Al(OH)3 which had been prepared by sol-gel method using Al(O-sec-C4H9)3 as the starting material. Depending on the mixing order and kinds of reducing agents, the optimum condition for the preparation of AlN was determined as follows. AlN single-phase was produced by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of (1) Benzene-washed Al(OH)3 and the reducing agent, carbon, which was mixed in a ball mill: for 5 hours at 140$0^{\circ}C$ under NH3 atmosphere; (2) The mixture prepared by hydrolysis of alkoxide solution into which carbon had been dispersed beforehand: for 5 hours at 135$0^{\circ}C$ ; (3) Al(OH)3 Poly(furfuryl alcohol) composite powder: for 2.5 hours at 135$0^{\circ}C$; (4) The mixture of Al(OH)3 and polyacrylonitrile: for 5 hours at 140$0^{\circ}C$. Addition of CaF2 increased the nitridation rate when carbon or polyacrylonitrile was used as the reducing agent; but it had no effect on the nitridation rate when furfuryl alcohol was used as the reducing agent.

We report nanostructure electrodes with $TiO_2$ as a core and carbon as a shell ($TiO_2$@C) for oxygen reduction in alkaline solution. The structure of core-shell electrodes is characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction method, and X-ray photoelectron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the $TiO_2$@C electrodes are characterized using a potentiostat and compared with those of carbon supported Pt catalyst. In particular, the core-shell electrode with dominant pyridinic-N component exhibits an imporved electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solution.
As a research for developing fine-grained high strength low carbon steels, the effects of austenitization temperature and hot deformation on microstructure was investigated in 0.15 wt.% carbon steels with microalloying elements such as Nb and Ti. When the steels were reheated at $1250^{\circ}C$, Nb containing steel showed very coarse austenite grain size of $200{\mu}m$ whereas Nb-Ti steel did fine one of $70{\mu}m$ because Ti carbonitrides could suppress the austenite grain growth. In case of 50% reduction at $850^{\circ}C$, the austenite grains in the Nb steel partially recrystallized while those in the Nb-Ti steel fully recrystallized probably due to finer prior austenite grains. For the Nb-Ti steel, ferrite grain size was not sensitively changed with austenitization temperature and compression strain and, severe deformation of 80% reduction was not essentially necessary to refine ferrite grains to about $3{\mu}m$ which could be obtained through lighter deformation of 40% reduction.
The catalytic activity of poly[(2,2'-bipyridine)copper(II)-μ4-oxalato] coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for O2 electroreduction is examined using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. The cyclic voltammograms show that O2 is electroreduced on pBpCuOx-coated GCE surfaces at a peak potential of ? 0.25 V in pH 4.7 acetate buffer media. The electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE occurs at 450 mV more positive potential than that found at a bare GCE. The catalytic activity originates from Cu(II) coordinated by bipyridine in the complexes and the polymer type Cu-complex films exhibit an enhanced stability compared to monomeric Cu-complexes during the O2 electroreduction. The rotating disk electrode measurements reveal that the electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE is a four-electron process. Kinetic parameters for O2 reduction on pBpCuOx-coated GCE are obtained from rotating disk experiments and compared with those on bare glassy carbon electrode surfaces.
