  • Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were produced using the arc-discharge graphite evaporation technique. Composite films were developed using MWNT dispersed in polystirol polymer. In the present work, various properties of the polymeric thin film containing carbon nanotubes were investigated by optical absorption, electrical resistivity and the same have been discussed.

  • Chemically modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes with acids were incorporated into a epoxy matrix by in situ polymerization process, to improve the transfer of mechanical load through chemical bonds, which were demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy. And the mechanical properties of epoxy/carbon nanotube composites were measured to investigate the role of carbon nanotubes. The epoxy/carbon nanotube composites shows higher tensile strength and wear resistance than existing epoxy, with 1 or 2 wt. % addition of functionalized carbon nanotubes. The tensile strength with 7 wt. % carbon nanotibes is increased by a 28% and the wear resistance in exceptionally increased by an outstanding 100 times.

  • Aligned carbon nanotubes(CNTs) array were synthesized using DC plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Silicon substrate Ni-coated of 5nm thickness were pretreated by $NH_3$ gas with a flow rate of 180sccm, for 10min. CNTs were grown on the pretreated substrates at $30%\;C_2H_2:NH_3$ flow ratios for 10min. Carbon nanotubes with diameters from 60 to 80 nanometers and lengths about 2.7 micrometers were obtained. Vertical alignment of carbon nanotubes were observed by FESEM.

  • In this paper, vibration and flow-induced flutter instability analysis of cantilever multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam is investigated. Non-classical effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia and van der Waals forces between two walls are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extend Galerkin method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin method. Cantilevered carbon nanotubes are damped with decaying amplitude for flow velocity below a certain critical value, however, beyond this critical flow velocity, flutter instability may occur. Variations of critical flow velocity with both radius ratio and length of carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

  • We investigated structural phases of potassium intercalated into carbon nanotubes using a structural optimization process applied to atomistic simulation methods. As the radius of carbon nanotubes increased, structures were found in various phases from an atomistic strand to multishell packs composed of coaxial cylindrical shells and in helical, layed, and crystalline structures. Numbers of helical atom rows composed of coaxial tubes and orthogonal vectors of a circular rolling of a triangular network could explain multishell phases of potassium in carbon nanotubes.

  • This research deals with the study of vibrational behavior of armchair and zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes invoking extended Love shell theory. The effects of different physical and material parameters on the fundamental frequencies are investigated. By using volume fraction for power law index, the fundamental natural frequency spectra for two forms of single-walled carbon nanotubes are calculated. The influence of frequencies against length-to-diameter ratios with varying power law index are investigated in detail for these tubes. To discretize the governing equation in eigen-value form, wave propagation approach is developed. Complex exponential functions have been used and the axial model depends on boundary condition that has been described at the edges of carbon nanotubes to calculate the axial modal dependence. Computer software MATLAB is utilized for the frequencies of single-walled carbon nanotubes and current results shows a good stability with comparison of other studies.

  • Dispersion of carbon nanotubes in biocompatible media are of particular interest for diverse biomedical and nanomedicine applications. Various biomolecules and biopolymers such as DNA, proteins, poly L-lysine, starch, gelatin, steroid biosurfactants, and chitosan have shown capability for the effective dispersion of carbon nanotubes in water. Chitosan has demonstrated capacity for effective dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in acidic medium and it also showed tendency to preferentially disperse smaller diameter nanotubes. Chemical functionalizations of chitosan enable its solubility in neutral pH water by reducing the intra and inter molecular hydrogen bonding. Herein, we present a neutral pH water soluble chitosan derivative, chitosan-hydroxyphenyl acetamide (CHPA), obtained by functionalizing the amino groups of chitosan with 4-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, as an efficient biocompatible dispersant for debundling and solubilization of SWNTs in neutral aqueous solutions. Various process conditions for individual dispersion of SWCNTs are analyzed based on optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy.

  • Carbon nanotubes have been intensively investigated for its fundamental and technical importances. Structural diversities and the related diverse physical properties with large aspect ratios are fascinating, For instance carbon nanotubes are metal and semiconductors depending on its chirality and furthermore the band gap can be tailored by the diamters. Several issues on its fundamental properties have been discussed. We will review some fundamental problems for band structures, molecular quantum wires, homojunctions, single electron tunneling, and quantum conductance. Several issues related to syntheis of carbon nanotubes including arc discharge, chemical vapor deposition, laser ablation will be extentively discussed. We will further review the applicability of carbon nanotubes on resonator, nanobalance, FET-type transistor, field emission displays electrode for secondary battery and hydrogen storage.

  • This paper studies the influence of internal moving fluid and flow-induced structural instability of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid. Detailed results are demonstrated for the variation of natural frequencies with flow velocity, and the flow-induced divergence and flutter instability characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam are investigated. Effects of various boundary conditions, Van der Waals forces, and non-classical transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and three different boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extended Galerkin's method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin's method. This paper also presents the comparison between the characteristics of single-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes considering the effect of van der Waals forces. Variations of critical flow velocity for different boundary conditions of two-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.
