  • The Korea District Heating Corporation operates a gas engine generator with a capacity of $4500m^3 /day$ of biogas generated from the sewage treatment plant of the Nanji Water Recycling Center and 1,500 kW. However, the actual operation experience of the biogas power plant is insufficient, and due to lack of accumulated technology and know-how, frequent breakdown and stoppage of the gas engine causes a lot of economic loss. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare technical fundamental measures for stable operation of the power plant In this study, a series of process problems of the gas engine plant using the biogas generated in the sewage treatment plant of the Nanji Water Recovery Center were identified and the optimization of the actual operation was made by minimizing the problems in each step. In order to purify the gas, which is the main cause of the failure stop, the conditions for establishing the quality standard of the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon were established through the analysis of the components and the adsorption test for the active carbon being used at present. In addition, the system was applied to actual operation by applying standards for replacement cycle of activated carbon to minimize impurities, strengthening measurement period of hydrogen sulfide, localization of activated carbon, and strengthening and improving the operation standards of the plant. As a result, the operating performance of gas engine # 1 was increased by 530% and the operation of the second engine was increased by 250%. In addition, improvement of vent line equipment has reduced work process and increased normal operation time and operation rate. In terms of economic efficiency, it also showed a sales increase of KRW 77,000 / year. By applying the strengthening and improvement measures of operating standards, it is possible to reduce the stoppage of the biogas plant, increase the utilization rate, It is judged to be an operational plan.

  • We investigated carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of the slipmouth Leiognathus nuchalis to reveal the effects of body size, feeding strategy and spatial distribution on the food resource utilization during the migration in the Seomjin estuary and Gwangyang Bay. The δ13C values of L. nuchalis caught in the Seomjin estuary where the salinity is lower than 30 psu were much lower than those in the deep-bay area of Gwangyang Bay. Such a spatial heterogeneity in δ13C values of the L. nuchalis clearly indicates active feeding within the estuarine habitat. In contrast, the δ15N values of L. nuchalis showed a consistency among sites, indicating that this species occupies identical trophic level across the whole area. The slipmouth distributed throughout the bay area, reflecting its euryhaline characteristics. However, the distribution pattern appeared to be separated according to body size into smaller individuals in the low-saline estuary and larger ones in the deep bay. Overall results support the plastic feeding strategy of the slipmouth from zooplanktonic (estuarine habitat) to epibenthic (deep-bay habitat) feeder during the migration between estuarine to deep-bay habitats.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the possibility on the agricultural utilization of lake sediment collected in the Daecheong Lake. Several parameters to estimate the degree of maturity of compost by windrow system were tested during a 50 day periods, and the results were as follows : During the composting of Daecheong Lake sediment, C/N ratio decreased gradually from 18.9 at the beginning to 13.1 at the final, while CEC increased from 33.5me/100g to 62.5me/100g. The temperature of lake sediment pile was the highest as $52^{\circ}C$ at 15th day and then decreased slowly until $30^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ after 50 days. The results may be suggested that Daecheong Lake sediment compost reaches an acceptable level of stability after about 50 days. In order to know the effect of the Lake sediment and its compost on the growth of tomato(Lycopersicum esculentum M.), pot experiments were performed. The appiication of lake sediment(AS) itself, sediment organic fertilizer(SOF), and NPK mixed with sediment organic fertilizer(NSF) was more effective for tomato plant height, fresh and dry weight, and chlorphyll content than those of control treatment. Also, the lake sediment compost improved the physico-chemical properties of soil such as pH, total carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorous and CEC.

  • Currently, bioethanol, a fuel additive for transportation, is produced mainly by using biomass (first generation) such as corn and sugar canes. First generation biomass can cause various problems in terms of increase in agricultural prices and ethical reasons. To address these problems, a nonedible lignocellulosic biomass can be utilized. Agricultural byproducts such as straw, bagasse, and forest byproducts from the wood processing industry. Therefore, production of wood based bioethanol can be an effective utilization route of second generation biomass, and its raw materials are more abundant than first generation resources. Furthermore, it is possible to secure cheap raw materials. One of the biggest advantages of using biofuels is that it contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases by minimizing the environmental impact, unlike fossil fuels. In this study, we investigated the greenhouse gas reduction effects that can be achieved through the use of Lignocellulosic bioethanol and government policies on renewable energy currently being implemented in ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines). In these four countries, policies and incentives related to biofuels have been developed. It is expected that the reduction ratio of carbon dioxide emission and the mixed biofuel will be gradually increased in the future.

  • A study on tile processing of liquefied fish protein with a long self life and good solubility has been carried out for the effective utilization of sardine. The whole sadine was chopped, homogenized with same amount of water and then hydrolyzed by the addition of commercial proteolytic enzyme. The hydrolysate was centrifuged and the supernatant was decolorized with active carbon, desodorized by azeotropic distillation with toluene, xylene and cyclohexane. The liquefied sardine protein was then concentrated by rotary vacuum evaporator with the addition of starch. The use of $0.2\%$ commercial proteolytic enzyme to the weight of the whole sardine showed the optimum hydrolysis ratio at $55^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The liquefied sardine protein could be decolorized and also desodorized by the treatment with $15\%$ active carl]on at room temperature for 30 minuted. In the view point of lipid concentration and the solubility of the product, the liquefied sardine protein prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the sardine protein concentrate was better than that prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the whole sardine and sardine protein concentrate.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of activated charcoal (AC) and oak charcoal on the ruminal fermentation characteristics, nutrient utilization in Korean native goats. Compared to reference diet, digestibility of dry matter, and crude protein in AC and charcoal diets tended to incraese. However, any tendency in ruminal degradation of crude fat was not observed. Ruminal degradation of NDF in AC diets tended to be more increased than that in non-AC diet. Although it was not significant, ADF tended to be increased in AC and charcoal diets. AC and charcoal did not affect the ruminal pH and ammonia-N. Concentration of total VFA and butyrate tended to be increased by adding AC and charcoal(p<0.05). Although it was not significant, acetate/propionate ratio tended to decreased in AC and charcoal diets. Although there appeared some beneficial effects in adding AC and charcoal to ruminant diets in this study, more works could be needed with AC before we can make clear conclusion on use of AC and charcoal in the ruminant diets.

  • Recently, needs for utilization of recycled aggregate have been increasing. However, its utilization has been limited due to its high alkalinity, which mostly came from the unremoved cement paste particles that were attached at the surface of recycled aggregate. Various efforts has been made to reduce its alkalinity by using $CO_2$, but currently available methods that uses $CO_2$ generate the problem with pH recovery. Considering the fact that supercritical $CO_2$ ($scCO_2$) can provide more rapid carbonation of cement paste than by normal $CO_2$, $scCO_2$ was utilized in this work. The reaction between $scCO_2$ and hydrated cement paste has been systematically evaluated. According to the results, it was found that powder type showed higher carbonation compared to that of cube specimens. It seems the carbonation by $scCO_2$ has occurred only at the surface of the specimen, and therefore still showed some amount of $Ca(OH)_2$ calcium aluminates after reaction with $scCO_2$. With powder type specimen, all $Ca(OH)_2$ was converted into $CaCO_3$. Moreover, additional calcium that came from both calcium aluminate hydrates and calcium silicate hydrates reacted with $scCO_2$ to form $CaCO_3$. After carbonation with $scCO_2$, the powder type specimen did not show pH recovery, but cube specimens did show due to the presence of portlandite.

  • The ability of probiotics to adhere to the intestinal epithelium likely plays an important role in their colonization of the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we performed high-throughput screening (HTS) for suitable characteristics of potential probiotic bacteria using attachment and colonization ability through a C. elegans surrogate in vivo model. A total of 100 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from infant feces were subjected to the colonization assay using C. elegans intestine. Based on colonization ability, we showed that nine isolates have a high attachment ability during whole experimental periods (up to 168 h), compared to Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG as a control. Also, through the use of an in vitro cell attachment model, nine isolates revealed highly binding activity to the mucus layer. Next, the selected 9 isolates were assayed for their survival ability when exposed to acidic and bile conditions as well as cholesterol reduction and the utilization of prebiotic substrates. As a result, the isolated nine strains were determined to be highly resistant to acid and bile conditions. In addition, they have significant activity for the reduction of cholesterol and utilization of several prebiotic substrates as a carbon source. Finally, the selected nine strains were identified by either L. rhamnosus or L. plantarum (4 strains for L. rhamnosus and 5 strains for L. plantarum, respectively). Taken together, we propose that the direct colonization of probiotics using C. elegans may be applicable to the rapid screening of valuable probiotic strains in vivo.

  • Dissolved nutrients in seawater are a key variable for understanding the role of the ocean in controlling atmospheric carbon dioxide, which is a major cause of global warming. In order to continuously monitor changes in the marine environment in the waters around the Korean Peninsula, dissolved nutrient data are being measured through regular observations by national institutions and various research projects. To increase the utilization of these data, the Jurisdictional Ocean Information Sharing System (JOISS), which integrates data from each institution, was established. In this study, for the dissolved nutrient data of JOISS, primary quality control was performed using the regional dissolved nutrient concentration range in the waters around the Korean Peninsula, and the correlation between the dissolved nutrient and other oceanographic characteristics or the correlation within dissolved nutrient components. Providing the quality control flags of regional range and primary quality control may increase the reliability of JOISS dissolved nutrient data and promote the utilization of dissolved nutrient data in JOISS. In addition, we proposed a secondary quality control method essential for improving the international comparability of JOISS dissolved nutrients.
