Preparation of Bucky Paper using Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes Purified through Surface Functionalization and Investigation of Their Field Emission Characteristics (기능화에 의한 단일벽 탄소나노튜브 정제 및 페이퍼 제조와 전계방출 특성 연구)

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were currently produced together with some contaminants such as a metallic catalyst, amorphous carbon, and graphitic nanoparticles, which should be sometimes purified for their applications. This study aimed to develop efficient, scalable purification processes but less harmful to SWCNTs. We designed three-step purification processes: acidic treatment, surface functionalization and soxhlet extraction, and heat treatment. During the soxhlet extraction using tetrahydrofuran, specifically, carbon impurities could be easily expelled through a glass thimble filter without any significant loss of CNTs. Finally, SWCNTs were left as a bulky paper on the filter through membrane filtration. Vertically aligned SWCNTs on one side of bulky paper were well developed in a speparation from the filter paper, which were formed by being sucked through the filter pores during the pressurized filtration. The bucky paper showed a very high peak current density of field emission up to $200\;mA/cm^2$ and uniform field emission images on phosphor, which seems very promising to be applied to vacuum microelectronics such as microwave power amplifiers and x-ray sources.

Preparation of Honeycomb Adsorbent for Carbon Dioxide Adsorption and Its Characteristics (이산화탄소 흡착제거를 위한 허니컴 흡착소자의 제조 및 이의 특성)

  • The honeycomb adsorbents and adsorption process for carbon dioxide removal from fuel gas were investigated. Zeolite paper was made with Na-X zeolite powder and ceramic fiber as raw materials. $Li^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ or $K^+$ ion exchanges for Na-X zeolite and additional Na-X coating were performed on zeolite paper for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity, after that the adsorption characteristics of the samples were analyzed. Among the ion exchanged samples, $Li^+$ ion exchanged zeolite paper was most promising but its carbon dioxide adsorption capacity was less than expected for process application. However, additional Na-X coating was found to be an effective method for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of the zeolite paper for process application. The carbon dioxide breakthrough test of the honeycomb adsorbent prepared with the zeolite paper was studied, and fuel gas treatment capacity was calculated when the honeycomb adsorbent was used in the rotary adsorption process.

The Influence of Industrial Structure Upgrading on Carbon Emission Efficiency in China

  • Purpose - The industrial structure upgrading can play an important role in promoting the carbon emission efficiency. Thus, this paper attempts to study the impact of industrial structure upgrading on carbon emission efficiency in order to reduce carbon emissions. Research design, data, and methodology - This paper selects panel data of 30 provinces and municipalities (autonomous regions) in China from 2001 to 2016, and divides them into three regions. The Moore index is used to measure the industrial structure upgrading, the non-radial SBM model based on undesired output is used to measure the slack variable to calculate the total factor carbon emission efficiency. Finally the impact of industrial structure upgrading on the carbon emission efficiency are analyzed. Results - It is found that the Moore index and the carbon emission efficiency in the eastern region is the highest in the three regions. Conclusions - The influence of various influencing factors on carbon emission efficiency is different between regions. The Moore index has a positive effect on the carbon emission efficiency in the eastern region, and has a negative influence coefficient on the central region. The effect on the western region is not obvious.

  • Efficiency of a fuel cell is determined by the generated water. If water is not removed sufficiently, water will be accumulated at GDL, which causes flooding. Therefore, water control is regarded as a crucial factor to sustain fuel ell performance. In this study, PTFE coating on the surface of carbon paper was carried out to establish optimum process for hydrophobic treatment of GDL. Carbon paper was immersed at different concentrations of nano-sized PTFE coating solution. Their characteristics were analyzed systematically by FE-SEM, water contact angle, cyclic voltamogam, XRD and FT-IR. The quantitative correlation between the amount of coated-PTFE on a carbon paper and concentration of coating solution was carefully investigated. It is suggested that the amount of PTFE-coating on a carbon paper can be managed by means of controling concentration of coating solution.

An Analysis of Dynamic Conditional Correlation among International Carbon Emission Trading Prices (국제 탄소배출권 가격의 동태적 조건부 상관관계 분석)

  • This paper analyzed the dynamic conditional correlation between the carbon emission trading prices of Korea, China, EU, New Zealand. This paper was analyzed using the daily data of carbon emission trading prices of each country from January 12, 2015 to January 13, 2021 using the DCC-GARCH model. Summarizing the research results, first, the dynamic conditional correlation between carbon emission trading prices in the EU, Korea, and China, excluding New Zealand, was strong, indicating that there was a co-movement phenomenon. Second, it was found that carbon emission trading prices in major countries have a stronger tendency to co-movement due to global shocks. Third, it appears that the dynamic conditional correlation between the carbon emission trading prices of Korea and China is gradually strengthening. This study confirmed that the co-movement between carbon emission trading prices in Korea and other countries gradually intensified as time passed. In particular, it is meaningful in suggesting the implication that the phenomenon of co-movement between carbon emission trading prices in Korea and China is gradually intensifying.

Mechanical Properties and Oxidation Behaviors of Boron Oxide Implanted Carbon Fibers

  • This paper describes the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of carbon fibers with and without additions of boron oxide additives, and describes the changes in the properties resulting from increased heat treatment temperature (HTT) of the fibers. Carbon fibers in this experiment were heat treated up to $2800^{\circ}C$ each with and without boron oxide treated on the surface of fibers. In the case of boron oxide added carbon fibers, they do not show the improvement of tensile strength and modulus compared to those of no treated carbon fibers below $2200^{\circ}C$ since they are doped substitutionally with boron above $2600^{\circ}C$, which accelerate the graphitization of carbon fibers. Boron oxide implanted carbon fibers showed high resistance to oxidation, however, when carbon fibers were heat treated below $2200^{\circ}C$, they showed almost the same trend of air oxidation.

  • In this paper, we have studied internal quality including chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonmetalic inclusion of test materials. We have analyzed dynamic characteristics of cutting force of milling including tensile strength value hardness etcs. Test materials are used the tempered carbon steel and the non-tempered carbon steel. The obtained results are as follows: 1.In analyzing internal quality, the tempered carbon steel have typical martensite structure and the non-tempered carbon steel have ferrite+pearlite structure. 2.Yield strength, tensile strength and hardness value are in the non-tempered carbon steel but elongation is maximum value in the tempered carbon steel. 3.Cutting force is smaller non-tempered carbon steel than tempered carbon steel when feed speed and depth of cut is constant. 4.Cutting force is smaller to the tempered carbon steel and smaller non-tempered carbon steel than tempered carbon steel when cutting conditions

SUPERLUBRICITY IN CARBON FILMS

  • This paper describes a new carbon film that afford superlubricity (i.e, friction coefficients of 0.001- 0.005) and superlow wear rates (i.e., $10^{-11}-10^{-10}mm^3/N.m$) to sliding metallic and ceramic surfaces, when tested in inert test environments. The wear life of these films are more than 1000 km even under very high contact pressures (i.e., 1-3 GPa) and at a wide range of sliding velocities (i.e., 0.1 to 2 m/s). They are produced in a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system at room temperature using highly hydrogenated gas discharge plasmas. Extensive research has shown that films grown in highly hydrogenated gas discharge plasmas (i.e., hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of 6 and above) provide superlow friction and wear coefficients. In full paper, specific conditions under which superlubricity can be achieved in carbon films will be discussed.and a mechanistic model will be proposed to explain the superlubricity of new carbon films.

Improved Performance of a Microbial Fuel Cell with Polypyrrole/Carbon Black Composite Coated Carbon Paper Anodes

  • A microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been regarded as noble clean energy technology that can directly convert biomass to electricity. However, its low power density is a main limitation to be used as a new energy source. To overcome this limitation, we focused on the anode improvement in a mediator-type MFC using P. vulgaris as a biocatalyst. Fuel cell performance increased when the anode was coated with carbon black or polypyrrole. The best performance was observed when polypyrrole/carbon black (Ppy/CB) composite material was coated on a carbon paper electrode. Our obtained value of 452 mW $m^{-2}$ is the highest value among the reported ones for the similar system. The effects of amount of Ppy/CB, mediator concentration, and amount of P. vulgaris have also been examined.
