  • This article investigates the energy harvesting characteristics of a magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cantilever beam reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT) under transverse vibration. To this end, the well-known lumped parameter model is used to represent the coupled multiphysics problem mathematically. The proposed system consists of the MEE-CNT layer on top and an inactive substrate layer at the bottom. The substrate is considered to be made of either an isotropic or composite material. Basic laws such as Gauss's Law, Newton's Law and Faraday's Law are used to arrive at the governing equations. Surface electrodes across the beam are used to harvest the electric potential produced, together with a wound coil, for the generated magnetic potential. The influence of various distributions of the CNT and its volume fraction, substrate material, length-to-thickness ratio, and thickness ratio of substrate to MEE layer on the energy harvesting behaviour is thoroughly discussed. Further, the effect of external resistances and changes in substrate material on the response is analysed and reported. The article aims to explore smart material-based energy harvesting systems, focusing on their behaviour when reinforced with carbon nanotubes. The results of this study may lead to an improved understanding of the design and analysis of CNT-based smart structures.

  • Carbon nanotube characterized by additional inductive effect as compared with the traditional conductors like copper wires of the same size. Consequently, carbon nanotubes have high characteristic impedance and slow wave propagation in comparison with traditional conductors. Due to these characteristics, carbon nanotubes can be used as antenna. In view of this, we describe and review the present research progress on carbon nanotube antennas. We present different analysis models and results which are developed to investigate the characteristics of CNT antennas. Then we conclude by summarizing the characteristics of CNT antennas and specifying the operating frequency limit.

  • Grinding characteristics for aluminium and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) powder during traditional and planetary ball milling investigated from the viewpoint of particle behaviour with the aimat developing CNT-dispersed samples ground based on powder metallurgy routes. In this work, a comparison between the pure aluminium and CNT input aluminium grinding was carried out to determine grinding time effect on size reduction. We observed that the use of the curly small-diameter multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) attributed to the beneficial role of the MWCNTs as grinding aids. It is suggested that careful choices of the sizes of CNTs and Al powders would allow fine-grinding of composite particles with uniformly distributed CNT reinforcements thereby ensuring improved properties of the final composites produced by low-temperature compacting.

  • From recent research, it has revealed that Electroacitve polymer(EAP) has a physical limitation. Carbon nanotube(CNT) is known as the promising material which has excellent electro-mechanical characteristics and is mostly defect-free. It is expected that a successful synthesis of CNT and Nafion known as a primary material for IPMC would make a great improvement on its electro-mechanic feature. In this paper, we suggest the method of synthesis of CNT with Nafion which improves electro-mechanical characteristic. Using mechanical dispersion with Nafion and Isopropyl Alcohol(IPA), we disperse Single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT). For a uniformly layer of CNT, we used a spray gun on a hot plate by a simplified method. In the result, we fabricated a disperse SWCNT/Nafion composite uniformly.

  • The microstructure and field emission properties of carbon nanotubes(CNT) grown by Ni-catalytic chemical vapor deposition(CVD) were investigated. CVD-grown CNT had a high density of curved shape with randomly oriented. It was found that an increase in electric field caused an increase in field emission current and field emission sites of CNT. The maximum field emission current density was measured to be 3.6 ㎃/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 2.5 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$, while the brightness of 56 cd/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was observed for the CNT-grown area of 0.8 $\textrm{cm}^2$ from a phosphor screen. Field emission current at constant electric field gradually decreased initially and then stabilized with time.

  • Carbon nanotube field emission display devices were fabricated using screen printing techniques. The CNT pastes are composed of organic binder, CNT, and additive materials such as glass frit, silver or ITO powders. The change in mixing ratio of various organic binders in CNT paste varied the electron emission characteristics. With increasing the contents of additive materials in CNT paste, turn-on field were increased, leading to decrease in electron emission current. The post-treatment process in this study induced the vertical alignment of carbon nanotubes on glass, resulting in the improvement of electron emission uniformity.

  • A linear carbon chain with pure sp hybridization has been intensively studied for the application of its intrinsic electrical properties to electronic devices. Owing to the high chemical reactivity derived from its unsaturated bond, encapsulation by carbon nanotubes (CNT) is provided as a promising method to stabilize the geometry of the linear carbon chain. Although the influence of CNT on the carbon chain has extensively been studied in terms of both electronic structure and geometries, the electron transport properties has not been discussed yet. In this regard, we provide the systematic atomic-scale analyses of the properties of the linear carbon chain within CNT based on a computational approach combining density-functional theory (DFT) and matrix green function (MGF) method. Based on the DFT calculations, the influence of CNT on electronic structures of the linear carbon chain is provided as well as its electrical origin. Via MGF calculations, we also identify the electron transport properties of the carbon chain - CNT complex.

  • Recently, the utilization of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in cement paste has been widely investigated in terms of improving the dispersion quality and enhancing the cement paste mechanical performance. While methods of functionalizing the CNT using surfactants to disperse the nanoparticles have been studied to some extent, the literature on the effects of chemical covalent functionalization is still scarce. This work focuses on chemical functionalization of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) using acid treatment, and a consequent addition of the modified MWCNT to the cement paste. The microstructural observation and degree of the MWCNT functionalization are examined using FE-SEM. The compressive strength is measured at an age of 28 days. The results of the study suggest that the acid-functionalized MWCNT are dispersed better compared to the pristine MWCNT due to presence of functional groups. The better dispersion of the nanotubes and the attached functional groups may contribute to the refinement of the microstructure of the cement paste and hence, increase its mechanical strength.

  • Carbon nanotubes have exceptional mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, and are considered for high performance structural and multifunctional composites. In the present study, the natural frequencies of aligned single walled carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced composite beams are obtained using shear deformable composite beam theories. The Ritz method with algebraic polynomial displacement functions is used to solve the free vibration problem of composite beams. The Mori-Tanaka method is applied to find the composite beam mechanical properties. The continuity conditions are satisfied among the layers by modifying the displacement field. Results are found for different CNT diameters, length to thickness ratio of the composite beam and different boundary conditions. It is found that the use of smaller CNT diameter in the reinforcement element gives higher fundamental frequency for the composite beam.

  • We studied the growth characteristics of carbon nanotubes which was grown from uniformly dispersed iron nanoparticles prepared from iron-acetate [Fe(II)$(CH_3COO)_2$]. The density of CNT was controlled from precursor concentrations. We also investigated the field emission properties of CNTs. We found that the optimization of CNT density is an important factor for field_emission properties.
