  • Forest biomass estimation is essential for greenhouse gas inventories and terrestrial carbon accounting. Remote sensing allows for estimating forest biomass over a large area. This study was conducted to estimate forest biomass and to produce a forest biomass map for Muju county using forest biomass conversion table developed by field plot data from the 5th National Forest Inventory and Landsat TM-5. Correlation analysis was carried out to select suitable independent variables for developing regression models. It was resulted that the height class, crown closure density, and age class were highly correlated with forest biomass. Six regression models were used with the combination of these three stand variables and verified by validation statistics such as root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias. It was found that a regression model with crown closure density and height class (Model V) was better than others for estimating forest biomass. A biomass conversion table by model V was produced and then used for estimating forest biomass in the study site. The total forest biomass of the Muju county was estimated about 8.8 million ton, or 128.3 ton/ha by the conversion table.

  • As a college dormitory has the features of high dwelling density and a floating population that becomes crowded during particular times, when a disaster such as a fire occurs, it has the risk of causing much loss of life. In this study, the fire simulation program Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), is used to predict the risk when a fire occurs, to analyze the problem, and to suggest an improvement plan for a new cadet dormitory at an university in Korea. The research results are as follows. When a fire occurred in the ironing room inside the cadet dormitory, a smoke detector operated after 65 seconds. Thirteen seconds later, a sprinkler started to operate. The temperature and carbon monoxide density reached the limit value at 241 and 248 seconds, respectively. Because the limit visibility value was reached within 66 seconds after the occurrence of a fire, it is predicted that preparation must be finished and evacuation should begin within 1 minute after the fire occurs, in order to have no casualties. Synthesizing this dormitory fire risk prediction result, the visibility value is considered to be the most dangerous factor for personal safety. Because of this, installing a smoke extraction system is suggested to secure visibility. After the installation of a smoke extraction system, the problem of smoke diffusion in the corridors improved.

  • In order to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide($CO_2$), this research use blast furnace slag in concrete manufacture, as 100% replacement of cement. The aim of this study is to investigate the density and strength properties of alkali-activated lightweight composites with alkali activators of different types and different amounts. The bubble for achieving the lightweight of alkali-activated lightweight composites was generated in the reaction between the paper ash and the alkali activators instead of using a foaming agent. Lightweight formed concrete was conducted basic experimental for determining replacement ratio of paper ash. Then, the density and strength were measured according to the types and the contents of the alkali accelerator that can react with the paper ash. As results, the optimum replacement ratio of the paper ash was 5%. The alkali activator containing NaOH 12.5% obtained the lowest weight of $1.13g/cm^3$. Also, compressive strength were relatively high. Therefore, this study demonstrated that alkali accelerator with a certain amount of NaOH can achieve relatively high strength and lightweight alkali-activated lightweight composites.

  • In this work, torrefaction of the sewage sludge was investigated the characteristics of torrefied products and the value of as energy resource to improve energy density and to maintain consistent quality of SRF. Torrefaction was performed two important torrefaction operational parameter, temperature($150-230^{\circ}C$) and reaction time(10-60min). As raising the torrefaction temperature at long reaction times, the moisture content of torrefied products was decreased, while the heating value was increased. Moreover, increasing of the torrefaction temperature led to a increase of the content of the carbon up to 60% compare to the initial the sample, and a decrease of the content hydrogen and oxygen. Especially, Average heating value was 4,818 kcal/kg regardless of the reaction time when torrefaction was performed over $210^{\circ}C$. In addition, the fuel ration and coal band were improved after torrefaction because the O/C and the H/C ratio were decreased.

  • Natural disasters of large scale such as typhoon, heat waves and snow storm have recently been increased because of climate change according to global warming which is most likely caused by greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Increase of greenhouse gases concentration has caused the augmentation of earth's surface temperature, which raised the frequency of incidences of extreme weather in northern hemisphere. In this paper, we present spatial analysis of future typhoon genesis based on IPCC AR5 RCP 8.5 scenario, which applied latest carbon dioxide concentration trend. For this analysis, we firstly calculated GPI using RCP 8.5 monthly data during 1982~2100. By spatially comparing the monthly averaged GPIs and typhoon genesis locations of 1982~2010, a probability density distribution(PDF) of the typhoon genesis was estimated. Then, we defined 0.05GPI, 0.1GPI and 0.15GPI based on the GPI ranges which are corresponding to probability densities of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15, respectively. Based on the PDF-related GPIs, spatial distributions of probability on the typhoon genesis were estimated for the periods of 1982~2010, 2011~2040, 2041~2070 and 2071~2100. Also, we analyzed area density using historical genesis points and spatial distributions. As the results, Philippines' east area corresponding to region of latitude $10^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$ shows high typhoon genesis probability in future. Using this result, we expect to estimate the potential region of typhoon genesis in the future and to develop the genesis model.

  • Lightweight geopolymers were fabricated by using fused slag from integrated gasification combined cycle as a law material and Si sludge from silicon wafer process as a bloating material for the purpose of replacing autoclaved lightweight concrete (ALC). Density and compressive strength of geopolymers were measured and compared with the properties of ALC according to the variation of mol concentration of alkaline activator, W/S ratio, addition of fibers, and addition of polystyrene and the possibility of replacing ALC panel was estimated through the comparisons. Although the geopolymer satisfying the standard of ALC panel was not made by controlling mol concentration and W/S ratio, addition of inserts such as fibers and polystyrene insert was tried to overcome the obstacle of enhancing properties. Geopolymers cannot satisfying the standard of ALC panel by adding carbon or glass fibers; however, adding fibers can be suggested as one of the methods enhancing compressive strength because the compressive strength of the specimen containing 0.3 wt.% glass fibers was increased by 3 times. The maximum addition of polystyrene insert was turned out to be 50 vol.% and the properties of geopolymers varied by the method of insertion. When using single polystyrene insert, compressive strength was 17.8 MPa and density was 0.996 g/㎤ which were similar values to the standard of ALC panel. If the difficulties of reproductivity of production and insertion method of inserts were overcome through the future research, the geopolymers containing polystyrene inserts could possibly replace ALC panel.

  • Recycling of waste materials in the construction Industry is a useful method that can cope with an environment restriction of every country. In this study, synthetic lightweight aggregates are manufactured with recycled plastic and fly ash with 12 percent carbon. Nominal maximum-size aggregates of 9.5 mm were produced with fly ash contents of 0, 35, and $80\%$ by the total mass of the aggregate. An expanded clay lightweight aggregate and a normal-weight aggregate were used as comparison. Gradation, density, and absorption capacity are reported for the aggregates. Five batches of concrete were made with the different coarse aggregate types. Mechanical properties of the concrete were determined including density, compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, fracture toughness, and fracture energy. Salt-scaling resistance, a concrete durability property, was also examined. Compressive and tensile strengths were lower for the synthetic aggregates; however, comparable fracture properties were obtained. Relatively low compressive modulus of elasticity was found for concretes with the synthetic lightweight aggregate, although high ductility was also obtained. As nv ash content of the synthetic lightweight aggregate increased, all properties of the concrete were improved. Excellent salt-scaling resistance was obtained with the synthetic lightweight aggregate containing 80 percent fly ash.

  • Sediment works as a resource for electric cells. This paper was designed in order to verify how sediment cells work with anodic material such as metal and carbon fiber. As known quite well, sediment under sea, rivers or streams provides a furbished environment for generating electrons via some electron transfer mechanism within specific microbial population or corrosive oxidation on the metal surfaces in the presence of oxygen or water molecules. We experimented with one type of sediment cell using different anodic material so as to attain prolonged, maximum electric power. Iron, Zinc, aluminum, copper, zinc/copper, and graphite felt were tested for anodes. Also, combined type of anodes-metal embedded in the graphite fiber matrix-was experimented for better performances. The results show that the combined type of anodes exhibited sustainable electricity production for ca. 600 h with max. $0.57\;W/m^2$ Al/Graphite. Meanwhile, graphite-only electrodes produced max. $0.11\;W/m^2$ along with quite stationary electric output, and for a zinc electrode, in which the electricity generated was not stable with time, therefore resulting in relatively sharp drop in that after 100 h or so, the maximum power density was $0.64\;W/m^2$. It was observed that the corrosive reaction rates in the metal electrodes might be varied, so that strength and stability in the electric performances(voltage and current density) could be affected by them. In addition to that, COD(chemical oxygen demand) of the sediment of the cell system was reduced by 17.5~36.7% in 600 h, which implied that the organic matter in the sediment would be partially converted into non-COD substances, that is, would suggest a way for decontamination of the aged, anaerobic sediment as well. The pH reduction for all electrodes could be a sign of organic acid production due to complicated chemical changes in the sediment.

  • This experiment was conducted at Sinheung series (fine loamy, mixed, nonacid, mesic family of Fluvaquentic Endoaquepts) in 2007 to 2008 at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA, Suwon, Gyeonggi province, Korea. Three kinds of green manure crops (hairy vetch, barley, rye) incorporated in soil for rice cultivation. 6.3 kg N $10a^{-1}$, and3.2 kg $P_2O_5$ $10a^{-1}$ were applied to rye and barley plot before rice transplanting. Chemical fertilizers had not been applied to hairy vetch plot. Glomalin concentration, soil bulk density, and porosity were measured in soil from different green manure crops incorporation after rice harvesting in paddy. Soil bulk density and porosity after rice harvesting improved at surface soil of hairy vetch incorporation plot. Degree of water stable aggregates increased all green manure incorporation plots. Glomalin concentrations significantly increased at hairy vetch incorporation treatment. In barley plot, the concentration of glomalin increased at 10-20 soil depth. There were no differences relationship between soil carbon, and glomalin concentration, but relationship between soil aggregate stability, and glomalin concentration significantly positive under green manure crop-rice cropping system. Rice yield decreased at hairy vetch incorporation plot because of field lodging. We suggested that hairy vetch incorporation should be considered about application amount, and water management using rice cultivation because of soil properties changes.

  • This study investigated removal characteristics of organic matters in pretreatment and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane processes for seawater desalination. Also, the influence of the changes in characteristics of organic matters on the membrane fouling was assessed. The pretreatment processes included dual media filtration (DMF), pressurized membrane filtration (MF), and submerged membrane filtration (SMF). Turbidity, UV absorption at 254 nm, dissolved organic carbon, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in raw and processed waters were analyzed. Ions and minerals were not removed by any pretreatment process tested, but were removed over 99% through the RO membrane process. Hydrophobic organics, which can play major role in organic membrane fouling, were relatively readily removed compared with hydrophilic ones. Membrane based pretreatment such as MF and SMF exhibited better removals of organics than conventional DMF. As the levels of organics in pretreated water decreased, the silt density index (SDI) decreased. MF treated water exhibited the lowest SDI value; this is possibly due to the lowest TEP ($0.1-0.4{\mu}m$) concentrations.
