Modification of Carbohydrate Metabolism in Transgenic Potato

  • Carbohydrates serve three different principal functions in the metabolism of plants. They are the primary products of energy fixation, they are important transport metabolites, and they are deposited as structural or storage compounds. Modification of carbohydrate metabolism therefore covers approaches to modify yield, to change sink/source relationships and thereby alter the ratio of harvestable material, and to improve the quality of crop plants. The scope of this article is to summarize research done at the Max-Planck-Institute related to the first two fields and to present in some detail what we learned, when we established a new carbohydrate storage form in potato.

Phytochemical survey of herb drugs V (한약의 식물화학적조사(V))

  • As the projects of this institute, 205 species of plants which are used currently as herb drugs in Korea were screened on the presence of alkaloids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, chalcones, lactones, glycosides, carbohydrates, terpenoids, steroids, proteins, polypeptides, saponins, and organic acids$^{1-4)}$, and the most reliable presence of alkaloids was detected by paper chromatography$^{5-8)}$. In this paper, presence of alkaloids detected by thin layer chromatography is added after screening of 40 species.

  • Meat itself contains all the essential nutrients for the organisms, because it is high in moisture, rich in nitrogenous, Plentifully supplied with minerals and accessory growth factors, usually has come fermantable carbohydrates and is at a faverable PH for most microorganisms. So, microorganisn can grow and multiply rapidly well in it and caused spoilage of meat and their Product. Therefore, storage and handling of meat must be Strictly controlled on contamination and growth of organism by a low temperature, among the low temperature control, chilling control of meat is one of the best method as good retention for meat quality.

  • Nutritional requirements for the growth of Cellulomonas flavigena were studied. C. flavigena grew well on cellulose when 0.005% or more of yeast extract was present in the growth medium. The growth factor in yeast extrct was, in part, thiamine and biotin. Amino acids had little effect on the growth on the organism. The extent of growth on yeast extract was much higher than that obtained on those vitamins, which indicates the presence of growth factors in yeast extract besides the vitamins, among the carbohydrates tested, the organism grew best on glucose and galactose, and the optimum N/P ratio was within the range of 0.75~3.17.

In this paper, presence of alkaloids is also tabulated after screening other 50 species.
