Carbofuran(CF) is one of the most widely used carbamate pesticides in the world applied for insect and nematode control. Due to its widespread use in agriculture and households, contamination of food, water, and air has become serious, and consequently adverse health effects are inevitable in humans, animals, wildlife and fish, it has reported that CF alone or in combination with other carbamate insecticides influences the level of reproductive and metabolic hormones such as thyroxine and corticosterone, and results in impairment of endocrine, immune behavioral functions. In an attempt to develop an effective integrated system of controlling blast disease of rice caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cav., the possibility of minimizing the disease incidence by proper application of fertilizers has been investigated. Thus the effect of silicate, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers on the development of blast disease as well as the correlation between the rice varieties an4 strains of P. oryzae were studied. The experiments were made in 1971 and 1973 by artificial inoculation and under natural development of the blast disease on rice plants. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Application of silicate fertilizer resulted in the increase of silicate as well as total sugar and potassium content but decrease of total nitrogen and phosphorus in tile leaf blades of rice plants. 2. The ratios of total C/total N. $ SiO_2/total$ N, and $K_2O/total$ N in leaf blades of rice plants increased by the application of silicate fertilizers. There was high level of negative correlation between the ratios mentioned above and the incidence of rice blast disease. 3. Application of silicate fertilizer reduced the incidence of rice blast disease. 4. The over dressing of nitrogen fertilizer resulted in the increase of total nitrogen and decrease of silicate and total sugar content in leaf blades, thus disposing the rice plants more susceptible to blast disease. 5. Over dressing of phosphorus fertilizer resulted in the increase of both total nitrogen and Phosphorus, and decrease of silicate content in the leaf blades inducing the rice plants to become more susceptible to blast disease. 6. Increased dressing of potash resulted in the increase of silicate content and $K_2O/total$ N ratio but decrease of total nitrogen content in leaf blades. When potassium content is low in the leaf blades of rice plants, the additional dressing of potash to rice plant contributed to the increase of resistance to blast disease. However, there was no significant correlation between additional potassium application and the resistance to blast disease when the potassium content is already high in the leaf blades. 7. When four rice varieties were artificially inoculated with three strains of P. oryzae, the incidence of blast disease was most severe on Pungok, least severe on Jinheung and moderate on Pungkwang and Paltal varieties. 8. Disease incidence was most severe on the second leaf from top and less sever on top and there leaf regardless of the fertilizer application when 5-6 leaf stage rice seedlings of four rice varieties were artificially inoculated with three strains of P. oryzae. 9. The pathogenicity of three strains of P. oryzae was in the order of $P_1,\;P_2,\;and\;P_3$ in their virulence when inoculated to Jinheung, Paltal, Pungkwang varieties but not with Pungok. The interaction between strains of P. oryzae and rice varieties was significant.

BACKGROUND: A lasting release of low levels of persistence chemicals including pesticides and pharmaceuticals into river has a bad influence on aquatic ecosystems and humans. The present study monitored pesticide residues in the Yeongsan and Seomjin river basins and their tributaries as a fundamental study for water quality standard of pesticides.METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine pesticides(aldicarb, carbaryl, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, 2,4-D, MCPA, methomyl, metolachlor, and molinate) were determined from water samples using SPE-Oasis HLB(pH 2) and LC/MS/MS. Validation of the method was conducted through matrix-matched internal calibration curve, method detection limit(MDL), limit of quantification(LOQ), accuracy, precision, and recovery. MDLs of all pesticides satisfied the GV/10 values. Linearity(r2) was 0.9965- 0.9999, and a percentage of accuracy, precision, and recovery was 89.4-113.6%, 3.1-14.0%, and 90.8-106.2%, respectively. All pesticides exclusive of aldicarb were determined in the river samples, and there was a connection between the positive monitoring results and agricultural use of the pesticides.CONCLUSION: Monitoring outcomes of the present study implied that pesticides were a possible non-point pollutant source in the Yeongsan and Seomjin river basins and tributaries. Therefore, it is required to produce and accumulate more monitoring results on pesticides in river waters to set water quality standards, finally to preserve aquatic ecosystems.
In this study, we tried to figure out the ecology of Masakimyia pustulae Yukawa et Sunose which attacts evergreen euonymus and results in scenic damage caused by early falling of leaves and may increase the susceptibility for anthrocnose. In addition, we tried to develope a method for the control of the insect to prevent spreading of the damage by use of insecticide. The results obtained from the study were as follows : 1. Masakimyia pustulae emerged from late April to late May at Chuncheon area. Average length of the adult insects was $1.88{\pm}0.43mm$, and the life span of them reached about 11 hours. The sex ratio of the insect was 56 : 44(female : male), and they ovipositied $90{\pm}28$ eggs. The shape of eggs was oval with average length $0.32{\pm}0.013mm$. The length of larvae averaged $1.64{\pm}0.25mm$ and started pupation from mid-March, which took about 40~50 days, although there was variance due to temperature variation in each spring. 2. The 3% powder of carbofuran treatment by burying $200g/m^3$ of the insecticide around the damaged tree during mid-March with additional burying about a week after pupation showed good result for the control of the insect, which resulted in more than 96.2% removal of the insects.
This study was made to investigate the effect of pesticides on microflora to nitrogen metabolism, nitrification and nitrogen fixing activity in the submerged soil. The results are summarized as follows; Pesticides treatment leaded to the inhibition of $NH_4{^-}$-oxdizers, $NO_3{^-}$-reducer, and denitrifying bacteria population. $NO_2{^-}$-oxdizers were inhibited by cabamate compounds, carbofuran and MIPC. Simetryne seemed to stimulate the denitrifying bacteria at 60 days after incubation. Generally, formation of $NO_2{^-}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ tended to decrease by pesticides application. Pesticides application stimulated Azotobacter and Clostridia populations, while simetryne inhibited Athiorhodaceae and Thiorhodaceae. However acephate seemed to be stimulatory to blue-geen algae. $C_2H_2$-reducing activity by acephate was clearly appeared. The change of $C_2H_2$-reducing activity did not seems to be affected by pesticides application.
Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) recently became a single worst insect which is not controlled effectively by organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides in Kangwon alpine croplands. The objective of this study was to determine if diamondback moth has developed a resistance to organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Resistance of diamondback moth, collected at Keichon, Jangpyong Taebaek, Chunchon, and Hongchon, was determined by the concentration required to kill fifty percent of population, $LC_{50}$. Their response of resistance varied to insecticides and locations: Taebaek populations were 35 and 70 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than susceptible(S) population. Hongchon populations were 94 and 254 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than S population. In addition, Chunchon populations were 37 and 19 times more resistant to profenofos and benfuracarb, respectively, than S population. However, the field populations did not differ in resistance to diazinon, phenthoate, flupyrazofos, carbofuran, and furathiocarb. This study show that field populations of diamondback moth found in Kangwon alpine vegetable croplands have developed a resistance and/or multiple resistance to some insecticides, implying that farmers are losing organophosphorus and carbamate insecticide options for selective control in vegetable crops.

In this study, the mobility of seven pesticides from soil in different slopes was investigated by simulated rainfall under field conditions. Simulated rainfall subjected to $22\;mm\;hr^{-1}$ was treated using rainfall simulator after 12 hr of pesticide treatment. Amounts of the pesticides were measured in run-off water samples. The soil samples collected before and after rainfall from upper, middle and lower parts and three different depths of sloped-plot were also analyzed. At result, the order of the amount of pesticide residues was $0{\sim}15$ > $15{\sim}30$ > $30{\sim}45\;cm$ of soil depth and no pattern was shown in upper, middle and lower, and different slopes in soil samples. all pesticides from the run-off water samples collected from soils were detected maximum 96% within 60 minutes after first collection except carbendazim and cypermethrin which have the lowest water solubilities. These results revealed that mobility of pesticides can be dependant mainly on soil textures and physicochemical properties of pesticides. Therefore, it can be suggested that selection of pesticides should be considered for properties of pesticide in the alpine and sloped-land.
The control effects of four systemic insecticides $Disyston^{(R)}$ (disulfoton) 5G, $Temik^{(R)}$ (aldicarb) 15G, $Ortran^{(R)}$ (acephate) 5G and $Curaterr^{(R)}$ (carbofuran) 3G, on small brown planthopper, Laodetphax striatellus (fallen), were studied by applying them in the furrow of spring barley field. Two different application times; April 19 and 25, and three different dosage rates were used. The results are as follows: 1. No significant difference in the mortalities among the developmental stages were observed with the treated barley on April 25, when various life stages had infested on the cutting of the treated barley in the laboratory. The residual periods were 19 days for Disyston and 31 days for Temik. 2. With field experiments, highly effective control effects were obtained with Disyston and Temik. The residual period was longer with the treatment on April 19 than with those on April 25 for Disyston, while they were reverse for Temik. 3. The effective doses were 2kg/10a for Disyston, while the effectiveness lasted more than 40days with dose of 1kg/10a for Temik. 4. From above results, Disyston and Temik could effectively reduce the population of small brown planthopper in the barley field, which is the effective reproductive sources of the population in the rice field.
This study characterized groundwater quality and the influence of agrochemicals in a part of Ilgwang-Myeon agricultural area in Gijang-Gun, Busan Metropolitan City, using factor analyses. From the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd analyses of groundwater samples, the mean concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$, $NO_3\;^-$, $Cl^-$, $SO_4\;^{2-}$, $F^-$, and $SiO_2$ were higher in the 2nd analysis than the other analyses. Pesticide carbofuran and herbicide alachlor were detected at the wells more than a half of all the wells in the 2nd analysis but not in the 4th analysis. This fact may be explained by that a higher precipitation induced higher infiltration rate of contaminants into groundwater during the 2nd survey. According to R- and Q-mode factor analyses, and chemical composition, inorganic constituents excepting $SiO_2$, $HC0_3\;^-$-, and $F^-$ may be influenced by anthropogenic sources (manures, synthetic fertilizers, and domestic wastes), seawater as well as water-mineral interaction. A typical indicator of groundwater contamination, nitrate, exceeds around 4-5 times over the Korean standard for drinking water. Additionally, the influence of seawater diminishes from the seaside to inland.

Inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase(AchE), such as organophosphates and carbamates, interfere the action of AchE in nerve and may lead to a severe impairment of nerve functions or even death. Therefore, insect AchE is the biological target of predominant insecticides used in agriculture. Biosensors are sensitive and can be used as dispoisable sensors for environmental control. In recent years, the use of AchEs in biosensor technology has gained enormous attention, in particular with respect to insecticide detection. The principle of biosensors using AchE as a biological recognition element is based on the inhibition the catalytic activity by the agents to be detected. We here present a strip-type biosensor based on AchE inhibition. In this study, acetylcholinesterase and PVA-SbQ(polyvinyl alcohol functionalized with methyl pyridinium methyl sulfate) were co-immobilized on immobilone-P membranes. Immobilization of the enzymes showed a stability in 6 months without activity loss in $4^{\circ}C$ storage. Enzymes immobilized on surfaces of membrane responded to organophosphates and carbamate more sensitivitive than enzyme in solution. Organophosphates and carbamates concentrations could be detected by entrapped and surface immobilized enzymes, in 5 min. For chlorpyrifos, carbofuran, cabaryl, and methidathion, the detection limits of AChE-strip were similar to that of HPLC/GC method.
