  • A synthetic route for 12 metal thiocarboxylate complex, $Cd(SOCCH_3)_2Lut_2$ [Lut = 3,5-dimethylpyridine (lutidine)], were investigated for their potential to act as precursors for the formation of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles. $Cd(SOCCH_3)_2Lut_2$ were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Thermal decomposition of $Cd(SOCCH_3)_2Lut_2$ is expected to undergo thiocarboxylic anhydride elimination to give stoichiometric cadmium sulfide nanoparticles and removes the organic supporting ligands cleanly. Prepared cadmium sulfide nanoparticles were characterized by fluorescence and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and displayed an emission band at 500 nm with an excitation wavelength of 360 nm.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of green tea catechin on renal dysfunction and blood presure change in chronic cadmium poisoned rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100$\pm$10g were randomly assigned to one normal group and three cadmium poisoned groups. Cadmium groups were classified to catechin free diet(Cd-0C group) 0.25% catechin diet(Cd-0.25C group) and 0.5% catechin diet(Cd-0.5C group) according to the levels of catechin supplement. Animals were raids for 20weeks. Cadmium were supplied as drinking water of 50ppm Cd2+ Morphological changes shown through a light microscope and an electro-microscope revealed the mitochondria and tubule epithelial cell edema in Cd -0C group but they were alleviated in catechin supplementation. The urinary $\beta$2-microglobulin that measured to observe the glomerular injury were higher in Cd-poisoned groups than in normal group but they was lowered by catechin supplementation. Glomerular filtration ratios(GFR) in Cd-poisoned groups were significantly lower than in normal group but that of catechin supplementation group was similar to normal group. This suggested that catechin protected the kidney from the functional damage. Angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) activity and blood pressure(BP) in Cd-poisoned groups were significantly higher than in normal group. Heart rate was tended to increase in Cd-poisoned groups. The results indicate that green tea catechin supplementation on chronic cadmium-poisoned rats normalized the renal dysfunction and blood pressure system.

  • In order to recycle waste nickel-cadmium batteries, cadmium was selectively removed by ion substitution reaction so that cadmium and nickel could be separated efficiently. The electrode powder obtained by crushing the electrode in the waste nickelcadmium battery was leached with sulfuric acid. The cadmium in the nickel-cadmium solution was precipitated with cadmium sulfide by the addition of sodium sulfide. Ion substitution experiments were carried out under various conditions. At the optimum condition with pH = -0.1 and $Na_2S/Cd=2.3$ at room temperature, the residual Cd in the solution was about 100 ppm, and most of it was precipitated with CdS.

  • Effects of cadmium on growth and nitrogen fixation activity of Melilotus suaveolens, a biennial legume plant dominating in the area of poor soil were quantitatively analyzed during the growing period. Cadmium treatments of 10, 30 and 100 ppm resulted in 12, 22 and 35% inhibition of plant height and 14, 25 nd 26% reduction of chlorophyll contents of leaves, respectively. The plant biomass reduced 51, 70 and 89% for leaves, 33, 50 and 59% for stems, and 42, 52 and 70% for roots, respectively by 10, 30 and 100 ppm Cd treatments. Cadmium contents of roots treated with 10, 30 and 100 ppm Cd were 62, 112 and 183 folds higher than that of the control, respectively. Cadmium contents of stems were about 1/2.2 of those of roots, but leaves contained only 1/27.8 of those of roots. Cadmium treatments resulted in increase of T/R ratios and decrease of F/C ratios significantly in the later growth period. Nodule formation was reduced to 8% in 42 days by the treatment of 100 ppm Cd. Specific nitrogen fixation activity of nodules attained 61.0, 24.0, 1.6 and 0.7 mol $C_2H_4{\cdot}g$ fr wt $nodule^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ on 42nd day, respectively for 0, 10. 30 and 100 ppm of Cd treatments. Total amount of nitrogen fixation per plant reduced by 73, 98 and 99% with the treatments of 10, 30 and 100 ppm Cd.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin E on the cadmium accumulation in body, cadmium excretion and detoxification functions in chronic cadmium poisoned rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100$\pm$10 g were randomly assigned to one normal group and three cadmium poisoned groups. Cadmium poisoned groups were classified to vitamin E free diet (Cd-0E group), vitamin E 40 mg/kg diet (Cd-400E group) and 400 mg/kg diet (Cd-400E group) according to the levels of vitamin E supplement. Animals were maintained on 0, 40 mg and 400 mg vitamin E/kg diets for 20 weeks and simultaneously administered 50 ppm Cd$^{2+}$ dissolved in the drinking water. Body weight, food intakes and food efficiency ratio were significantly decreased in all cadmium groups, compared with those of normal group. The accumulation of cadmium in rat liver, kidney and blood was reduced by sufficient vitamin E supplementation. The metallothionein (MT) content in liver and kidney were increased in all cadmium groups compared with that of normal group. The ratio of cadmium absorption and retention were significantly decreased in vitamin E supplementation groups. Accordingly, vitamin E supplementation resulted in an excretion of cadmium in urine and feces and a lowered accumulation of cadmium in liver and kidney. It can be suggested that increased MT synthesis lead to the significant decrease in cadmium absorption and retention ratios.s.

  • The effect of $Cd^{2+}$ on stomatal apertures of epidermal strips and intact leaves in Commelina communis L. was investigated. Cadmium stimulated stomatal opening. The stomata, treated with 100 $\mu$M $Cd^{2+}$ opened to a degree of about 8.38 fm, but the stomata, treated with no cadmium opened to 3.74 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In order to show that there was no mechanical or osmotic impediment preventing the stomata in the epidermal strips, salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were used. The treatment of 100 $\mu$M SA and 1 $\mu$M ABA inhibited 14% and 28% of stomatal opening, respectively. Other heavy metals such as $Al^{3+} and Ag^{2+}$ were also used to investigate the effect of the stomatal apertures. The treatment of $Al^{3+} and Ag^{2+}$ also stimulated 19% and 41% of stomatal opening. To understand how cadmium open stomata, the effect of cadmium on the K+ influx into the epidermal strips was investigated. $Cd^{2+}$, SA, ABA inhibited 98%, 28%, 34% of K+ uptake respectively. 3-weeks old Commelina was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution (0,5 mM $Cd^{2+}$, 10 mM $Cd^{2+}$) for 4 days and stomatal conductance were measured. The treatment of 5 mM $Cd^{2+}$ and 10 mM $Cd^{2+}$ showed about 51% and 70% inhibition of stomatal conductance, respectively Therefore, it could be concluded that stomata in epidermal strips and intact leaves behaved differently and cadmium- stimulated stomatal opening was due to the result of cadmium uptake into the epidermal strips instead of K+. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vitamin E on antioxidative defense system of liver in acute cadmium poisoned rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100$\pm$10gm were randomly assigned to one control and three cadmium injected groups. Cadmium injected groups were fed vitamin E free diet(OE-Cd group), 40mg vitamin E per kg diet(40E-Cd group) or 400 mg vitamin E per kg diet(400E-Cd group). Vitamin E level of normal group was 40mg per kg diet. Animals were injected intraperitoneally with 2.0mg Cd$^2$$\^$+//kg bw for 4 days after the rats were fed diets with three different levels of vitamin E for 2 and 4weeks. Activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSHPx) and glutathione S-transferase(GST) were decreased in cadmium injected groups but those were significantly improved by dietary vitamin I supplementations. Vitamin E contents reduced glutathione(GSH) in the live were decreased in cadmium injected groups, but we., not significantly different among three groups with different levels of vitamin E supplementations. Contents of liver thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) of 0E-Cd group were higher than those of 400E-Cd and 400E-Cd groups, but those were markedly alleviated according to vitamin E supplementations. These results indicate that cadmium poisoning in rats causes decreasing antioxidative defense system and increasing peroxidative damage in liver, however can be restored by vitamin E supplements. • Recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae BZ-pJ containing the gene coding for metallothionein, a metalbinding protein was grown in the medium with high cadmium concentrations to study the characteristics of growth and cadmium uptake. High concentrations of cadmium reduced cell growth and final cell density and increased the lag phase periods of the recombinant yeast. Addition of 10 mg $Cd^{2+}$/L to the growth medium remarkably decreased a lag period and enhanced the specific cadmium uptake to 52.6 mg $Cd^{2+}$/g dry cell. The effect of copper addition was further investigated in the medium of 680 mg Cd2+/L. An increase in copper concentration from 11.0 to 33.3 mg/L enhanced the specific cadmium uptake from 17.0 to 42.0 mg Cd2+/g dry cell.

  • The liquid cathode processing is necessary to separate cadmium from the actinide elements in the pyroprocessing since the actinide deposits are dissolved or precipitated in a liquid cathode. Distillation process was employed for the cathode processing owing to the compactness. It is very important to avoid a splattering of cadmium during evaporation due to the high vapor pressure. Several methods have been proposed to lower the splattering of cadmium during distillation. A multi-layer porous round cover was proposed to avoid a cadmium splattering in our previous study. In this study, distillation behavior of $Cd-ZrO_2$ and Cd - Bi systems were investigated to examine a multi-layer porous round cover for the development of the cadmium splatter shield of distillation crucible. It was designed that the cadmium vapor can be released through the holes of the shield, whereas liquid drops can be collected in the multiple hemisphere. The cover was made with three stainless steel round plates with a diameter of 33.50 mm. The distance between the hemispheres and the diameter of the holes are 10 and 1 mm, respectively. Bismuth or zirconium oxide powder was used as a surrogate for the actinide elements. About 40 grams of Cd was distilled at a reduced pressure for two hours at various temperatures. The mixture of the cadmium and the surrogate was distilled at 470, 570 and $620^{\circ}C$ in the crucible with the cover. Most of the bismuth or zirconia remained in the crucible after distillation at 470 and $570^{\circ}C$ for two hours. It was considered that the crucible cover hindered the splattering of the liquid cadmium from the distillation crucible. A considerable amount of the surrogate material reduced after distillation at $620^{\circ}C$ due to the splattering of the liquid cadmium. The low temperature is favorable to avoid a liquid cadmium splattering during distillation. However, the optimum temperature for the cadmium distillation should be decided further, since the evaporation rate decreases with a decreasing temperature.

  • Objectives : To estimate the normal range of blood and urine cadmium levels using data from occupationally non-exposed office workers to cadmium in selected Korean women. Methods : A total of 437 women from healthy office workers were analyzed. To analyze blood and urine cadmium levels, blood and urine samples of study subjects were collected carefully and analyzed. Using a structured questionnaire, characteristics of the study subjects were investigated by well trained interviewers. Results : Mean blood cadmium concentration (CdB) was $0.46\;{\mu}g/{\ell}$ (GM; 0.16), whereas mean urine cadmium concentration (CdU) was $0.94\;{\mu}g/g$ creatinine (GM; 0.37). A significant increase of cadmium levels in blood and urine was observed by the rise of age (p=0.007; p=0.002, respectively). In the analysis of smoking state, blood and urine cadmium levels were higher in current smokers than in nonsmokers. In the multiple regression analysis, the rise of age and currently smoking were observed as a significant factor associated with cadmium level. Conclusion : These findings suggest that mean cadmium level in blood and urine indicated a relatively low level, although the rise of age and currently smoking were observed as a significant factor related to cadmium level. It can be used for the basic data to prevent harmful effects of cadmium exposure among female workers occupationally exposed to cadmium.
