  • Stay cable is easily exposed to vibration induced rainy wind effects. There are some problems for not only unexpected vibration but also well-known vibration. An outbreak of displacement by the said effects brings damages such as over-tension of cables and barriers, fatigue of anchorages and dampers, and additional shear force variation of stiffening girders. This study suggests analytic methodology for dynamic tension variation of cables and shear force variation of stiffening girders. Additionally this study announces with dynamic problems for cable stayed bridge briefly. To realize this subject, we divide restoring force into chord component and normal component and then make up the differential equations which can satisfy physical phenomenon for each component. Finally we apply adequate functions such as sinusoidal and parabola in order to reduce these differential equations. Therefore we can meet with good results through a series of above process. As a remarkable result, CIP recommendations (2002) give inadequate solution with over 10% error. However it gives very good solution if parts of our study are reflected at the said recommendations. The fact means that CIP recommendations (2002) well-known as international standard of stay cables are not even concern about this subject yet. For verification of this study, F.E. analysis using E.C.C. with external forces was fulfilled, and the accuracy and conciseness of this study were shown.

  • The wake galloping phenomenon is evaluated for two cylinders via two-dimensional wind tunnel tests. The two cylinders are deployed parallel to the inclination of the vertical plane, which simulates the inclined stay cables of a cable-stayed bridge. The upstream and downstream displacements of the cylinder are observed with varying center distances between the two cylinders. The effect of structural damping on the mitigation of wake galloping is also investigated. The amplitude of the vibration is very sensitive to center distance between the two cylinders. The maximum amplitudes exceededthe allowable limit of the design guidelines for small center distances of less than or equal to six times the diameter of the cylinder. The overall results conformedto the conventional design practice for the wake galloping of parallel cables. It was found, however, that the increase in the damping was not effective in reducing the amplitude of the vibration in the wake galloping phenomenon.

  • In this study nonlinear FEM analysis for steel pylon base of a cable supported bridge is performed in order to compare the results of Akashi-Kaikyo bridge's design specification established in 1970. Due to convenience of its application, the Akashi grand bridge's design specification has been applied to the base design of cable stayed bridges. It has been using linear spring in order to model prestressed high tensioned bars between steel pylon bottom plates and the base concrete. However, the results of nonlinear FEM analysis revealed that the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge's design specification has various problems in the analysis of the steel pylon base. And the steel pylon base has various complex members connecting with each other, and it is main member to resist against the wind load or the earthquake load. Therefore, the nonlinear FEM analysis has to be conducted in order to predict the behavior of steel pylon base exactly. Also, the nonlinear FEM analysis is more reasonable for the load and resistant factor design.

  • Dynamic displacement of structures is an important index for in-service structural condition and behavior assessment, but accurate measurement of structural displacement for large-scale civil structures such as long-span bridges still remains as a challenging task. In this paper, a vision-based dynamic displacement measurement system with the use of digital image processing technology is developed, which is featured by its distinctive characteristics in non-contact, long-distance, and high-precision structural displacement measurement. The hardware of this system is mainly composed of a high-resolution industrial CCD (charge-coupled-device) digital camera and an extended-range zoom lens. Through continuously tracing and identifying a target on the structure, the structural displacement is derived through cross-correlation analysis between the predefined pattern and the captured digital images with the aid of a pattern matching algorithm. To validate the developed system, MTS tests of sinusoidal motions under different vibration frequencies and amplitudes and shaking table tests with different excitations (the El-Centro earthquake wave and a sinusoidal motion) are carried out. Additionally, in-situ verification experiments are performed to measure the mid-span vertical displacement of the suspension Tsing Ma Bridge in the operational condition and the cable-stayed Stonecutters Bridge during loading tests. The obtained results show that the developed system exhibits an excellent capability in real-time measurement of structural displacement and can serve as a good complement to the traditional sensors.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of critical infrastructure comprises a major pillar of maintenance management, shielding public safety and economic sustainability. Although SHM is usually associated with data-driven metrics and thresholds, expert judgement is essential, especially in cases where erroneous predictions can bear casualties or substantial economic loss. Considering that visual inspections are time consuming and potentially subjective, artificial-intelligence tools may be leveraged in order to minimize the inspection effort and provide objective outcomes. In this context, timely detection of sensor malfunctioning is crucial in preventing inaccurate assessment and false alarms. The present work introduces a sensor-fault detection and interpretation framework, based on the well-established support-vector machine scheme for anomaly detection, combined with a coalitional game-theory approach. The proposed framework is implemented in two datasets, provided along the 1st International Project Competition for Structural Health Monitoring (IPC-SHM 2020), comprising acceleration and cable-load measurements from two real cable-stayed bridges. The results demonstrate good predictive performance and highlight the potential for seamless adaption of the algorithm to intrinsically different data domains. For the first time, the term "decision trajectories", originating from the field of cognitive sciences, is introduced and applied in the context of SHM. This provides an intuitive and comprehensive illustration of the impact of individual features, along with an elaboration on feature dependencies that drive individual model predictions. Overall, the proposed framework provides an easy-to-train, application-agnostic and interpretable anomaly detector, which can be integrated into the preprocessing part of various SHM and condition-monitoring applications, offering a first screening of the sensor health prior to further analysis.

  • This study was conducted to develop a thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials which is considered as a durable pavement materials. The mechanical performance characteristics of the polymer epoxy resin materials were also evaluated to confirm the validity as a pavement materials. To estimate the performance properties of the materials, bending tests and bonding tests were performed using freeze-thaw and ultra-violet rays to accelerate the aging of materials. In addition, HYUNStay, a commercial structural analysis program for cable-stayed bridges, was used to compare the effect of paving materials between the polymer epoxy resin materials and the conventional ones on the reduction of cable tension and on the stability of the main tower. According to the test results, it is noted that the thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials can improve the performance and durability of pavement compared to the conventional one.
