Stay cables, such as are used in cable-stayed bridges, are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. Several methods have been proposed and implemented to mitigate this problem, though each has its limitations. Recently some studies have shown that active and semiactive control system using MR (Magnetorheological) damper can potentially achieve both higher performance levels than passive control system and adaptability with few of the detractions. However, a control system including a power supply, controller, and sensors is required to maximize the performance of the MR damper and this complicated control system is not effective to most of large civil structures. This paper proposes a smart passive damping system using MR dampers by introducing electromagnetic induction (EMI) system as an external power source to MR damper and verified the performance of smart passive damping system for mitigating the vibration of stay cables. The performances of smart passive damping system are compared with those of linear viscous damper and passive-mode MR damper.
This paper is concerned with an experimental research to control of random vibration caused by external loads specially in cable-stayed bridges which tend to be structurally flexible. For the vibration control, we produced a model structure modelled on Seohae Grand Bridge, and we designed a shear type MR damper. On the center of its middle span, we placed a shear type MR damper which was to control its vibration and also acquire its structural responses such as displacement and acceleration at the same site. The experiments concerning controlling vibration were performed according to a variety of theories including un-control, passive on/off control, and clipped-optimal control. Its control performance was evaluated in terms of the absolute maximum displacements, RMS displacements, the absolute maximum accelerations, RMS accelerations, and the total power required to control the bridge which differ from each different experiment method. Among all the methods applied in this paper, clipped-optimal control method turned out to be the most effective to reduces of displacements, accelerations, and external power. Finally, It is proven that the clipped-optimal control method was effective and useful in the vibration control employing a semi-active devices such MR damper.
Long span cross-rope suspension structure is an innovative structural system evolved from typical Cross-Rope Suspension (CRS) guyed tower, a type of supporting system with short span suspension cable supporting overhead power transmission lines. In mountainous areas, the span length of suspension cable was designed to be extended to hundreds or over one thousand meters, which is applicable for crossing deep valleys. Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of overhead power transmission lines was considered to be one of the major factors of its fatigue and service life. In this paper, VIV and its controlling by Stockbridge damper for long span CRS was discussed. Firstly, energy balance method and finite element method for assessing VIV of CRS were presented. An approach of establishing FE model of long span CRS structure with dampers was introduced. The effect of Stockbridge damper for overall vibration of CRS was compared in both theoretical and numerical approaches. Results indicated that vibration characteristics of conductor in long span CRS compared with traditional tower-line system. Secondly, analysis on long span CRS including Stockbridge damper showed additional dampers installed were essential for controlling maximum dynamic bending stresses of conductors at both ends. Moreover, factors, including configuration and mass of Stockbridge damper, span length of suspension cable and conductor and number of spans of conductor, were assessed for further discussion on VIV controlling of long span CRS.
The frequency of a traditional tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) depends solely on the length of liquid column, which imposes certain restrictions on its application to long span cable-stayed bridges during construction. The configuration of a cable-stayed bridge varies from different construction stages and so do its natural frequencies. It is thus difficult to apply TLCD with a fixed configuration to the bridge during construction or it is not economical to design a series of TLCD with different liquid lengths to suit for various construction stages. Semi-active tuned liquid column damper (SATLCD) with adaptive frequency tuning capacity is studied in this paper for buffeting response control of a long span cable-stayed bridge during construction. The frequency of SATLCD can be adjusted by active control of air pressures inside the air chamber at the two ends of the container. The performance of SATLCD for suppressing combined lateral and torsional vibration of a real long span cable-stayed bridge during construction stage is numerically investigated using a finite element-based approach. The finite element model of SATLCD is also developed and incorporated into the finite element model of the bridge for predicting buffeting response of the coupled SATLCD-bridge system in the time domain. The investigations show that with a fixed container configuration, the SATLCD with adaptive frequency tuning can effectively reduce buffeting response of the bridge during various construction stages.
As a critical member of cable-stayed bridges, stay cables play an important role of supporting the entire structure. Traffic, wind or rain-wind induced vibrations of stay cables would be a major cause of degrading both safety and serviceability of the bridge. One of the effective alternatives to solve this problem is to employ the cable dampers. In order to design the cable damper optimally. it is necessary to exactly estimate the dynamic characteristics of the existing cables. Therefore, in this study, a cable exciting system (exciter) controlled digitally was developed. And to evaluate the performance of the cable exciter developed, a solution of the differential equation of cable motion considering the exciter was derived. Using the cable exciter. sine sweeping and resonance tests on a cable model were carried out to obtain the dynamic characteristics effectively.
Stay cables, such as are used in cable-stayed bridges, are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. Several methods have been proposed and implemented to mitigate this problem, though each has its limitations. Recently some studies have shown that semiactive dampers can potentially achieve performance levels nearly the same as comparable active devices with few of the detractions. This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate the performance of semiactive dampers for mitigating the vibration of stay cables. Moreover, a number of recently proposed semiactive control algorithms are formulated for use with shear mode MR damper to compare the efficiency of each algorithm through numerical simulation. Numerical simulation considers a stay cable excited by shaker and controlled by shear mode MR dampers. In simulation, the response with a semiactive damper is found to be dramatically reduced compared to the uncontrolled case. Furthermore, it is verified that the algorithm based on Lyapunov control theory is very efficient in mitigating the cable vibration.
The number of cable-stayed bridges has been increasing worldwide, causing issues in maintaining the structural safety and integrity of bridges. The stay cable, one of the most critical members in cable-stayed bridges, is vulnerable to wind-induced vibrations owing to its inherent low damping capacity. Thus, vibration mitigation of stay cables has been an important issue both in academia and practice. While a semi-active control scheme shows effective vibration reduction compared to a passive control scheme, real-world applications are quite limited because it requires complicated equipment, including for data acquisition, and power supply. This study aims to develop an Arduino-based integrated cable vibration control system implementing a semi-active control algorithm. The integrated control system is built on the low-cost, low-power Arduino platform, embedding a semi-active control algorithm. A MEMS accelerometer is installed in the platform to conduct a state feedback for the semi-active control. The Linear Quadratic Gaussian control is applied to estimate a cable state and obtain a control gain, and the clipped optimal algorithm is implemented to control the damping device. This study selects the magnetorheological damper as a semi-active damping device, controlled by the proposed control system. The developed integrated system is applied to a laboratory size cable with a series of experimental studies for identifying the effect of the system on cable vibration reduction. The semi-active control embedded in the integrated system is compared with free and passive mode cases and is shown to reduce the vibration of stay-cables effectively.
To control vertical and lateral compound vibration simultaneously using an integrated smart controller, passive tuned mass damper (TMD) and tuned liquid damper (TLD) are updated and combined to an adaptive-passive TMD-TLD (AP-TMD-TLD) system. As for the vertical AP-TMD part on top of the vertical spring, it can retune itself through varying the level of liquid in the tank to adjust its mass, while the lateral AP-TLD part at the bottom of the vertical spring can retune itself by changing the level of liquid. Further, for multimodal response control, the multiple AP-TMD-TLD (MAP-TMD-TLD) system is proposed as well. Each AP-TMD-TLD in the system can identify the structural vertical and lateral modal frequencies through the wavelet-transform (WT) based algorithm and retune its vertical and lateral natural frequencies both through adjusting the level of liquid in the AP-TMD and AP-TLD parts respectively. A cantilever cable-stayed landscape bridge which is sensitive to both human-induced and wind-induced vibrations is presented as a case study. For comparison, initial parameters of MAP-TMD-TLD are mistuned. Results show that the presented system can retune its vertical and lateral frequencies precisely, while the retuned system has a better bi-directional compound control effect than the mistuned system before the retuning operation and can improve the serviceability significantly.
