Oxidation Resistance and Electrical Conductivity of $Ti_3SiC_2$ with Thin Oxide Layer

  • [ $Ti_3SiC_2$ ] was coated with $Al_2O_3$, MgO and $SiO_2$ respectively by sol-gel method and cured at 900 and $1200^{\circ}C$. The coated oxides did not react with $Ti_3SiC_2$ at $900^{\circ}C$ but reacted with it to form $TiC_x$ at $1200^{\circ}C$. The specimen coated with $SiO_2$ at $900^{\circ}C$ formed a dense protecting layer and showed the best oxidation resistance at $800^{\circ}C$ in air. However, the dense protecting layers did not form in $Al_2O_3$ and MgO coated specimens cured even at $900^{\circ}C$. MgO coated specimen showed the worst improvement in the oxidation resistance because the reactivity of MgO with $Ti_3SiC_2$ was highest. On the other hand, the electrical conductivities were measured in MgO and $Al_2O_3$ coated specimens to have TiCx but could not be measured in the $SiO_2$ coated ones because of the nonconductive dense protected layers.

  • The mechanical properties of mechanically alloyed Al-4wt%Mg alloys dispersed with $MgAl_2O_4$ dispersoilds at room and elevated temperatures were investigated. The powders in steady state during mechanical alloying consisted of Mg-supersatu rated Al solid solution and $Al_4C_3$ which resulted from the reaction of Al with C in process control agent (methanol). The hot-extruded materials consisted of uniformly dispersed fine $MgAl_2O_4$, ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$ and matrix with extremly fine substructure. Tensile specimens prepared from the extruded bars were tested at room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$ under different strain rates. The tensile strength of alloys at room temperature ranged from 500 to 594MPa. At elevated temperatures, the tensile strengths and elongations decreased with increasing temperature. Adding 3% $MgAl_2O_4$ to Al-4wt%Mg increased the tensile strength of 50MPa at rowan temperature and 20MPa at $400^{\circ}C$.

  • The objective of this study is to prepare lead-free thick film resistor (TFR) paste compatible with AlN substrate for hybrid microelectronics. For this purpose, CaO-ZnO-$B_2O_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass system was chosen as a sintering aid of $RuO_2$. The effects of the weight ratio of CaO to ZnO in glass composition, the glass content and the sintering temperature on the electrical properties of TFR were investigated. $RuO_2$ as a conductive and glass powder were dispersed in an organic binder to obtain printable paste and then thick-film was formed by screen printing, followed by sintering at the range between $750^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ for 10 min with a heating rate of $50^{\circ}C$/min in an ambient atmosphere. The addition of ZnO to glass composition and sintering at higher temperature resulted in increasing sheet resistance and decreasing temperature coefficient of resistance. Using $RuO_2$-based resistor paste containing 40 wt%glass of CaO-20.5%ZnO-25%$B_2O_3$-7%$Al_2O_3$-15%$SiO_2$ composition, it is possible to produce thick film resistor on AlN substrate with sheet resistance of $10.6\Omega/\spuare$ and the temperature coefficient of resistance of 702ppm/$^{\circ}C$ after sintering at $850^{\circ}C$.

  • Al2O3 층의 유무에 따른 Ge 나노입자가 형성된 MOS 구조의 캐패시터의 전압에 대한 캐패시턴스 (C-V)의 특성을 측정하였다. Al20O층이 형성된 MOS 캐패시터의 C-V 곡선은 전압의 변화에 대해 나타나는 반시계 방항의 히스테리시스 특성은 Si 기판과 Ge 나노입자 사이를 전자가 터널링하여 Ge 나노입자에 저장되었기 때문이다. Al2O3 층이 없는 MOS 캐패시터의 경우, 시계 방향의 히스테리시스 특성과 좌측으로 이동한 플랫-밴드 전압 값을 볼 수 있다. 이것은 SiO2 층에 존재하는 산소 결원 (oxygen vacancy) 으로 인한 전하 트랩이 이러한 특성을 나타냈다 할 수 있다. 또, 백색광이 C-V 특성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 논하였다.

  • Al2O3/SiC composite-material was synthesized by the birth-spread mechanism through the carbothermal reduction reaction of SiO2 in Ha-Dong Kaolin with carbon powder under H2 gas atmosphere at 1300~140$0^{\circ}C$. Average diameter of synthesized SiC whiskers were 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and aspect ratio (c/a) was 10~100. Al2O3 particles and SiC whiskers were mixed homogeneously in the reacted pellet.

프로판 탈수소 반응에 미치는 금속산화물과 혼합된 Pt-Sn/Al2O3 촉매의 영향 (Effect of Pt-Sn/Al2O3 catalysts mixed with metal oxides for propane dehydrogenation)

  • 금속 산화물과 혼합한 $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ 촉매의 프로판 탈수소 반응 성능의 향상 가능성에 대해서 연구하였다. 금속 산화물로서 $Cu-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $Ni-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $Cu/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$를 제조하여 $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ 촉매와 혼합하고, 프로판 탈수소 반응 성능을 측정하였다. 이 결과들을 불활성 물질인 glass bead를 혼합한 $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ 촉매를 기준샘플로 삼아 비교하였다. 촉매와 금속산화물을 환원처리하지 않고 반응 실험한 경우, $576.5^{\circ}C$에서 기준샘플의 전환율 8% 대비, $Cu-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$를 혼합한 $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ 촉매가 14.9%의 높은 전환율과 96.8%의 선택도를 보였다. 촉매와 금속산화물을 환원 처리하여 반응활성을 측정한 경우, $Cu/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$$Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$의 혼합촉매가 기준샘플대비 초기에 높은 수율을 보였다. 그러나, 촉매를 환원 처리한 경우 전반적으로 전환율 상승이 크지 않았고, 이것으로 $Cu-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$의 격자산소가 탈수소반응의 전환율 증가 영향을 주었음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Mechanical alloying of $Ni_3Al$ and $Y_2O_3$ added ODS $Ni_3Al$ from elemental powders was investigated by the X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The steady states of $Ni_3Al$ and ODS $Ni_3Al$ powders were reached after mechanical alloying with the condition of the ball-to-powder input ratio of 20:1 for 20 hours and 10 hours, respectively. The addition of nano-sized $Y_2O_3$ particles enhanced cold working and fracture, and subsequently accelerated MA of $Ni_3Al$ powders. DSC results of MAed $Ni_3Al$ powders showed four exothermic peaks at 14$0^{\circ}C$, 234$^{\circ}C$, 337$^{\circ}C$ and 385$^{\circ}C$. From the high temperature X-ray diffraction analysis, it was concluded that the peaks were resulted from the recovery solution of unalloyed Al in Ni, the formation of intermediate phase NiAl, and $LI_2$ ordering of MAed $Ni_3Al$ powders.

P123-Templated Co3O4/Al2O3 Mesoporous Mixed Oxides for Epoxidation of Styrene

  • $Co_3O_4$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ mesoporous powders were prepared by a sol-gel method with starting matierals of aluminum isopropoxide and cobalt (II) nitrate. A P123 template is employed as an active organic additive for improving the specific surface area of the mixed oxide by forming surfactant micelles. A transition metal cobalt oxide supported on alumina with and without P123 was tested to find the most active and selective conditions as a heterogeneous catalyst in the reaction of styrene epoxidation. A bBlock copolymer-P123 template was added to the staring materials to control physical and chemical properties. The properties of $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ powder with and without P123 were characterized using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), a Bruner-Emmertt-Teller (BET) surface analyzer, and $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectroscopy. Powders with and without P123 were compared in catalytic tests. The catalytic activity and selectivity were monitored by GC/MS, $^1H$, and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy. The performance for the reaction of epoxidation of styrene was observed to be in the following order: [$Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ with P123-1173 K > $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ with P123-973 K > $Co_3O_4$-973 K>$Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$-973 K > $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ with P123-1473 K > $Al_2O_3$-973 K]. The existence of ${\gamma}$-alumina and the nature of the surface morphology are related to catalytic activity.

ZrO2의 고분자화 분산법을 이용한 Al2O3/ZrO2요업체의 제조 (Fabrication of Al2O3/ZrO2Ceramics by the Polymerization Dispersion Process)

  • Al$_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$복합체의 기계적 성질 향상을 위하여 분산되는 ZrO$_2$상을 Zr-Y-polyester의 고분자화(polyesterization) 공정(Pechin법)을 이용하여 알루미나 기지 중에 초미립으로 균질하게 분산시키기 위한 방안을 고찰하여 보았다. 일반적으로 공침법에 의해 제조되는 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ 복합체의 경우 초기 ZrO$_2$입자의 크기가 매우 작아도 알루미나 내에 분산되는 ZrO$_2$입자가 소결시에 비교적 빠르게 성장 및 입자간의 응집이 발생하게 되며 이로 인해 분산의 불균일을 유발하여 미세하고 균질한 복합체를 얻기가 힘들다. 따라서 상용 이소결성 $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$분말(Sumitomo.AES-11(0.5$mu extrm{m}$))에 ZrO(NO$_3$)$_2$와 Y(NO$_3$)$_3$를 citric acid/ethylene glycol과 혼합한 polyesterization시켜 $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$입자 표면에 미세하고 균질하게 코팅 형태로 부착되도록 하였다. 이를 90$0^{\circ}C$에서 하소한 후 1450∼1$600^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 소결하여 미세한 ZrO$_2$입자가 매우 균질하게 분산된 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ 복합체를 제조하였으며 이의 기계적 성질을 관찰하였다.

Annealing에 따른 $\beta$-SiC-$TiB_2$ 복합체의 특성 (Properties of $\beta$-SiC-$TiB_2$ Composites by Annealing)

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta$-SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ and the annealing method. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_{5}Y_{3}O_{12}$). In pressureless annealing method, the relative density and the mechanical properties of composites were increased with increasing $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ contents because YAG of reaction between $Al_{2}O_3$ and $Y_{2}O_3$ was increased. But In pressured annealing method, reaction between $Al_{2}O_3$ and $Y_{2}O_3$ formed YAG but the relative density decreased with increasing $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ contents. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature range of 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$.
