  • A typical unsteady internal ballistic analysis model was proposed to take account of the erosive burning with the variance of local velocity and pressure along the grain surface of a solid rocket combustor. To validate the model of concern in the study, both cases of non-erosive and erosive burning were compared with the previous researches with marginal accuracy. It was quantitatively investigated that the combustion pressure, grain length, initial temperature, and vaporization temperature of propellant affect the erosive burning characteristics.

  • To measure burning rate of solid propellants using ultrasonic technique, a special closed bomb and an ultrasonic and pressure measurement system are fabricated. During pressurization tests and burning tests on propellants, ultrasonic and pressure signal are acquired in realtime fashion by this system. Based on acquired signals, analysis programs using two different algorithm which can measure burning rates corresponding to pressures are compared. One algorithm is to correct sound velocity variation of propellants and solid couplant, another one is only to correct sound velocity variation of propellants. And accuracies of homing rates measured through these algorithms are calculated through comparison with homing rates measured using strand burner method.

  • In order to clarify turbulent combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon mixtures by hydrogen addition, turbulent burning velocities in a constant volume vessel were measured for both lean and rich hydrocarbon mixtures. Moreover, the configuration characteristics of turbulent flame was investigated in the wrinkled laminar flame region. A laser tomography technique was used to obtain the images of turbulent flame, and quantitative analyses were performed. As a result, the characteristics of turbulent burning velocity was shown a distinct difference with the addition rate of hydrogen between lean and rich mixtures. On the other hand, the obtained tomograms showed that the surface area of turbulent flame depends almost only on the turbulence intensity.

  • The present experiment was conducted to measure the unstretched laminar burning velocity and cellular instability of DME-air and syngas (in steps of 25 %) added DME-air premixed flames using propagating spherical flame. The experimental results were discussed in two focuses which are effects of syngas fraction and initial pressure on Markstein length, unstretched laminar burning velocities, and cellular instability. The flame instability was evaluated by the Markstein length and cellularity which is caused by diffusional-thermal instability and hydrodynamic instability.

  • A typical unsteady internal ballistic analysis model was proposed to take account of the erosive burning for a solid rocket motor. The variance of local velocity and pressure along grain surface are analyzed by using the continuity and momentum equation. The model introduced in this study showed good agreements with the results of previous internal ballistics program. It was investigated that the change of combustion pressure, gas velocity and regrestion rate along the grain axis.

  • Characteristics of lifted flames for highly diluted propane and methane with nitrogen in coflowing air is experimentally investigated. In case of propane, for various fuel mole fractions and jet velocities, three distinctive types of flames are observed; nozzle attached flames, stationary lifted flames, and oscillating lifted flames. When fuel jet velocity is much smaller than coflow velocity, the base of nozzle attached flame has a tribrachial structure unlike usual coflow difusion flames. Based on the balance mechanism of the propagation speed of tribrachial flame with flow velocity, jet velocity is scaled with stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. Results show that there exists two distinctive lifted flame stabilization; stabilization in the developing region and in the developed region of jets depending on initial fuel mole fraction. It has been found that lifted flame can be stabilized for fuel velocity even smaller than stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. This can be attributed to the buoyancy effect and flow visualization supports it. Lifted flames are also observed for methane diluted with nitrogen. The lifted flames only exist in the developing region of jet.

  • On the refutation demanded for a control of various toxic substances. PCBs(poly chlorinated biphenyl) has a fatal poisonous matter in the ecosystem and the environmental pollution as it Is a kind of stable chemical substance. Especially, the gross Product of PCBs is estimated at about one million tonnage all over the world. However it is kept on storing in untreated state, then has a deterioration by the Prolonged storage and a risk of overflowing. Therefore, this research examined the fundamental characteristics of combustion and emission for the target of using the IPA (iso-propyl alcohol) solution as a part of PCBs control. IPA was filled to three kinds of Vessel, i.e. Vessel I, II, and III, and then was investigated as follows combustion shape, flame temperature. mass burning velocity, and PM(Particulate matter). A radial thermometer and a C-A thermocouple measured the flame temperature, and the optical extinction method by using He-Ne laser and the filter weight method used in the PM measurement. As a result, with an increasing of L/S ratio, the flame length become shorter and the burning velocity is more rapid, but the particulate matters is higher. It is supposed that the air flow rate is high on Vessel. and then the combustion is Promoted in the surface area of the upstream zone. The future works plan to investigate the characteristics with an using of the mixing of IPA and PCBs

  • A two phase model for the simulation of flame propagation has been developed and applied to a mixture of coal air. The effects associated with changes in the initial coal partial equivalence ratio and the initial diameter of particles on the structure of laminar flame propagation have been studied qualitatively and quantitatively. Especially the flame structure, the burning velocity, and the thermal behavior were evaluated. It was found that the radiative heat transfer absolutely dominates over the conduction mode. The increase in particle size was seen to contribute to an obvious increase in burning velocity for fuel lean and stoichiometric mixture. But for fuel rich mixture, the burning velocity was found to exhibit a weaker dependence on particle size.

  • Laminar burning velocities of propane- and iso-octane-air mixtures have been numerically modelled over a wide range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature. These correlations are applicable to the modelling of stratified charged combustion like that of lean bum and GDI engine combustion. The numerical models are based on the results calculated by PREMIX code with Sloane's detailed chemical reaction mechanism for propane and FlameMaster code with Peters' for iso-octane. Laminar burning velocity for two fuels showed a pressure and temperature dependence in the following form, in the range of $0.1{\sim}4MPa$, and $300{\sim}1000K$, respectively. $S_L={\alpha}\;{\exp}[-\xi({\phi}-{\phi}_m)^2-{\exp}\{-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)\}-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)]$ where ${\phi}_m=1.07$, and both of ${\alpha}$ and ${\xi}$ are functions of pressure and temperature. Compared with the results of the existing models, those of the present one showed the good agreement of the recent experiment data, especially in the range of lean and rich sides. Judging from the calculated results of the stratified charged combustion by using STAR-CD, the above modelling prove to be more suitable than the other ones.
