  • In this study, the characteristics of the structure of buried type capacitor for RF multi- chip-module are investigated. We developed many kinds of structures to minimize the space of capacitor in module and the value of parastic series inductance without any loss in capacitance, and in this procedure the effect of vias especially position, size, number length are analyzed and optimized. This characteristics of structures are checked through HFSS(high frequency structure simulator) of HP, and the value of parastic series inductance is calculated by equivalent circuit analysis. And ensuing the result of simulation, we made buried type capacitors using LTCC (low temperature cofired ceramic) material. In measurement of this sample, we found out the effective and precise method can be applied to buried type and characteristics of vias and striplines added for measuring are quantified.

  • Geotechnical buried structures with relatively light weight have been suffering from uplift damage due to liquefaction in the past earthquakes. The factor of safety approach by Koseki et al. (1997a), which is widely used in seismic design, predicts the triggering of uplift. However, a method for "quantitative" estimates of the uplift displacement has yet to be established. Estimation of the uplift displacement may be an important factor to be considered for designing underground structures under the framework of performance-based design (ISO23469, 2005). Therefore, evaluation of the uplift displacement of buried structure in liquefied ground during earthquakes is needed for a performance-based design as a practical application. In order to predict the uplift displacement quantitatively, a simplified method is derived based on the equilibrium of vertical forces acting on buried structures in backfill during earthquakes (Tobita et al., 2012). The method is verified through comparisons with results of centrifuge model tests and damaged sewerage systems after the 2004 Niigata-ken Chuetsu, Japan, earthquake. The proposed flow diagram for performance-based design includes estimation of the uplift displacement as well as liquefaction limit of backfill.

  • In this paper, the response of an underground fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) composite pipe system subjected to realistic loading scenarios that may be experienced by an actual buried pipeline is investigated. The model replicates an arbitrary site with a length of buried pipeline, passing through a $90^{\circ}$ bend and into a valve pit. Various loading conditions, which include effects of pipe pressurization, differences in response between stainless steel and fibreglass composite pipes and severe loss of bed-soil support are studied. In addition to pipe response, the resulting soil stresses and ground settlement are also analysed. Furthermore, the locations of potential leakage and burst have also been identified by evaluating the contact pressures at the joints and by comparing stresses to the pipe hoop and axial failure strengths.

  • Earthquakes are one of the most important disasters affecting underground structures. Urban gas underground pipes may cause safety problems of structures in the event of an earthquake. Since Korea began digital observation, the number of earthquakes has been steadily increasing. The seismic design standard for urban gas pipes was established in 2008, but it is difficult to estimate the impact of pipes in the event of an earthquake based on the installation of pipes. In this study, structural analysis was performed on PE (polyethylene pipe) pipes and PLP (polyethylene coated steel pipe) pipes, which are mainly used as buried pipes in Korea, according to environmental and pipe variables in the event of an earthquake. This study sought to find the variables of the most vulnerable buried pipe by modeling pipes through Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and generating displacement on the ground. Through this study, it was confirmed that the larger the elastic modulus of the soil, the deeper the buried depth, the smaller the tube diameter, and the higher the pressure, the more PLP pipes are affected by earthquakes than PE. Based on these results, the vulnerable points of buried urban gas pipes are inferred and used for special inspections of buried pipes in the event of an earthquake.

  • Cathodic protection(CP) is widely used as a means of protecting corrosion for not only marine structures like ship hulls and offshore drilling facilities, but also underground structures like buried pipelines and oil storage tanks. The principle of CP is that the anodic dissolution of metal can be protected by supplying electrons to the cathode metal. When unprotected structures are nearby to CP systems, interference problems between unprotected and protected structures may be happened. The stray current interference can accelerate the corrosion of nearby structures. So far many efforts have been made to reduce the interference in the electric railway systems adjacent to the underground metal structures like buried pipelines and gas/oil tanks. During recent few decades the protection technologies against stray current induced corrosion have been significantly improved and a number of techniques have been developed. However, there is very limited information an marine environments. Some complex harbor structures are protected by two cathodic protection systems, i.e. sacrificial anode cathodic protection(SACP) and impressed current cathodic protection(ICCP). In this case, when the protection current from sacrificial anodes returns to the cathode through electrolyte, it passes through nearby other low resistance metal structures. In many cases the stray current of ICCP systems influences the function of SACP. In this study, the risk of stray current from the SACP system to adjacent reinforced concrete structures has been verified through laboratory experiments. Concrete and steel pile structures modeled a part of bridge have been investigated in terms of CP potential and current between the two. The variation of stray current according to the magnitude of ICCP/SACP has been studied to mitigate it and to suggest the proper protection criteria.

  • The response displacement method is the most frequently used method for seismic design of buried structures. This method is pseudo-static method, and the evaluations of velocity response spectrum of seismic base and response displacement of surrounding soil are the most important steps. In this study, the evaluation of velocity response spectrum of seismic base according to the Korean seismic design guide and the simple method of calculating the response displacement were studied. It was found that velocity response spectrum of seismic base can be estimated by direct integrating the ground-surface acceleration response spectrum of soil type $S_{A}$, and the evaluation of the response displacement using double cosine method assuming two layers of soil profile shows the advantages in the seismic design.n.

  • To analyze the seismic reliability of concrete rectangular liquid storage structures (CRLSSs), assuming that the wall thickness and internal liquid depth of CRLSSs are random variables, calculation models of CRLSSs are established by using the Monte Carlo finite element method (FEM). The principal stresses of the over-ground and buried CRLSSs are calculated under three rare fortification intensities, and the failure probabilities of CRLSSs are obtained. The results show that the seismic reliability increases with the increase of wall thickness, whereas it decreases with the increase of liquid depth. Between the two random factors, the seismic reliability of CRLSSs is more sensitive to the change in wall thickness. Compared with the over-ground CRLSS, the buried CRLSS has better reliability.

  • A study was carried out to investigate the fluid-structure interaction phenomena of buried hydrophone system that exposed complex loads due to handling, transportation and installation. The buried hydrophone system has necessarily neighborhood structures for installation. Because of the neighborhood structure, acoustic field is deformed. We analyze the piezoelectric-structural-acoustic coupled problem and the results to use a finite element analysis software, ANSYS, which has an coupled field analysis capability. The effect of the component of hydrophone system is revealed altogether in pressure distribution. So, we classify and analyze the problem by four different compositions for decomposition.
