  • Analyses of wind wave characteristics near the Korean marginal seas were performed in 2008 and 2009 by comparisons of an operational wind wave forecast model and ocean buoy data. In order to evaluate the model performance, its results were compared with the observed data from an ocean buoy. The model used in this study was very good at predicting the characteristics of wind waves near the Korean Peninsula, with correlation coefficients between the model and observations of over 0.8. The averaged Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for 48 hrs of forecasting between the modeled and observed waves and storm surges/tide were 0.540 m and 0.609 m in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In the spatial and seasonal analysis of wind waves, long waves were found in July and September at the southern coast of Korea in 2008, while in 2009 long waves were found in the winter season at the eastern coast of Korea. Simulated significant wave heights showed evident variations caused by Typhoons in the summer season. When Typhoons Kalmaegi and Morakot in 2008 and 2009 approached to Korean Peninsula, the accuracy of the model predictions was good compared to the annual mean value.

  • This study is part of a project to develop and improve mooring systems for oceanographic use that include an electro-optical sensor, 1MHz Nortek Aquadopp Doppler Profiler and AIRMAR multipurpose Sensor. The adaption of Doppler current profilers to measure directional wave spectra has provided a new instrumentation approach to coastal and nearshore oceanographic studies. The HEIOB is developed are light weight and of a compact design, and can be easily installed in marine environment. Since there are no base station and gateways in marine environments, we selected CDMA and Orbcomm to send the data information. Therefore, the data can be sent by either e-mail service or Short Message Service (SMS). This paper will present some of scientific sensor results regarding real-time oceanographic and meteorological parameters such as wind spend, wind direction, wave direction, and etc. The modeling and test results highlight the engineering challenges associated with designing these systems for long lifetimes. It can also be used in future application to build wave observation buoy network in real-time using multiple ubiquitous buoys that share wave data and allow analysis of multipoint, multi-layer wave profiler.

  • The buoy of the wave energy converter moves by direct contact with the fluid. In order to design a buoy by using the numerical method, it is necessary to analyze not only the contact with the fluid but also the exact behavior of the fluid. In this paper, differences between weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) and incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) are compared and analyzed for two-dimensional dam breaking simulation. ABAQUS, which is a commercial analysis program, is used for WCSPH analysis. A laboratory code is developed for ISPH analysis. The surface shape, the velocity, and the pressure pattern of the fluid are compared. The results of the laboratory code show the similar tendencies with those of ABAQUS, and there is a little difference in the pressure result.

  • Generally wave buoy and visual observation are used to measure sea waves. But the wave buoy cannot be applicable for the ship moving in deep sea. So the visual observation has been used for it. But it has several defects and limitation related to environmental condition and observer. To overcome this problem, various wave measurement systems have been suggested. Recently, the wave measurement systems using nautical X-band radar have been developed and extended its application area. In this report, we introduce the wave measurement system, WaveFinder, developed by authors. The system was calibrated and verified with the measurement results of wave buoy. The system was adopted to measure wave condition during sea trials. The system will be a device to support safe navigation in ship's voyage.

  • In recent years, many countries have been endeavoring to exploit the offshore wind energy in terms of overcoming the limitations of on-land wind energy. Considering that mountains cover 70 percent of the Korean Peninsula and arable plains for wind energy are negligibly small, Korean government aggressively drives the offshore wind development of the Korean Peninsula. As part of preliminary investigation of offshore wind resources, KEPCO-RI (Korea Electric Power Corporation-Research Institute) has been analyzing marine buoy datasets measured at 5 positions over the period of 12 years, including estimation of extreme wind speed. It can be observed that variation of yearly wind speed, monthly wind speed as well as frequency distribution of wind direction. Wind classes of buoy sites are estimated by extrapolated average wind speed using log law. In addition, wind turbine class based on IEC code is assessed for evaluation of suitable wind turbine.

  • Longline type aquaculture facilities in the open sea are based on the cable-buoy-weight mooring system. For their optimal design it is necessary to estimate tensions along the mooring lines including the attachment points of buoys and weights. However, the dynamic analysis is very complicated due to the nonlinear behaviors of the mooring lines and the effects of wave and current. In this paper, parametric studies for various buoy-weight cases are shown. Finite difference scheme is employed in obtaining eigenfrequencies in the frequency domain. Nonlinear hydrodynamic drag forces are equivalently linearized.

  • This is a brief report on the development of a system which provides fishing vessels with a real-time key information that can direct to regions of high fish density. Water temperature and Plankton distribution are the base parameters and various public information have been examined and summarized. The suface water temperature can be obtained from NOAA's high resolution infrared data base and the vertical water temperature can be obtained from TAO/TRITON's buoy near the equator and ARGOS's drifting buoy covering wider Pacific ocean. MODIS's data is also utilized for sea color information. A model data format is proposed and a few examples are demonstrated.

  • An experimental method to investigate the dynamic charasteristics of buoys in extreme environmental condition is established. Because the buoy model requires a resonable size for accurate experiment, the test condition in model basin that satisfies the similarity law is hardly met with capability of test facilities. It is suggested that the linear wave component that is unable to satisy similarity is separated with others. The model experiment can be carried out with mitigated condition for the linear wave components while others including wave drift, current and wind are keeping the similarities. Then the result is extrapolated to give the dynamic behavior of buoys in extreme condition because linear wave component is soley responsible to oscillatory buoy motion and other environmental components are applied as a initial tension. the similarity for current and wind conditions is viewed as equivalence of restoring forces. the validity of proposed method is examined with different types of standard ocean buoys and it indicates that the linearity of measured characteristics is assured with a limitation of resonable distance between test and estimated wave conditions.

  • The numerical investigation of obliquely incident wave interactions with fully submerged dual buoy/porous-membrane floating breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing is studied based on linear potential theory and Darcy's law. The numerical solutions are obtained by using a discrete-membrane dynamic model and second-kind modified Bessel function distribution over the entire boundaries of fluid regions. First, numerical solutions for an idealized dual submerged system without buoys are obtained. Second, a more practical dual submerged system with membrane tension provided by buoys at its tops is investigated by the multi-domain boundary element method particularly devised for dual buoy/porous-membrane problems with gaps. The velocity potentials of wave motion are coupled with porous-membrane deformation, and solved simultaneously since the boundary condition on porous-membrane is not known in advance. The effects of varying permeability on membranes and wave characteristics are discussed for the optimum design parameters of systems previously studied. The inclusion of permeability on membrane eliminates the resonances that aggravate the breakwater performance. The system is highly efficient when waves generated by the buoys and membranes were mutually canceled and its energy at resonance frequency dissipates through fine pores on membranes.

  • This paper presents the performance analysis of a long-range marine communication system developed for monitoring the fishing gears. LoRa based buoys were developed to monitor fishing gears. The buoy sends its coordinates along with other relevant information to the central monitoring station via a gateway. During the experiment, a up to 30 km of communication between a buoy and a gateway was successfully tested.
