Power Save of Marine Tracker Buoy System Based on NB-IoT for Identification of Fishing Gear (어구 자동 식별을 위한 NB-IoT 기반의 해양 트래커 부이 시스템의 전력 절감)

  • Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries declared action plan for the electric fishing gear using real name in order to prevent overusing the fishing gear and to reduce discarded fishing gear. It is needed for a technique that can efficiently transmit the information including the type and location of the fishing gear and the user's real name to the fishing boat and the control center using IoT-based communication. The marine tracker buoy system, which is placed on the water for a long time, transmit the position data and the state data of the buoys to the control center in the ground by using NB-IoT channels. In this paper, we propose the algorithm for the low-power operation of the marine tracker buoy system is proposed and test results of current consumption in the marine tracker buoy system with the proposed algorithm is investigated.

A Design of Mooring Line for the Buoy-Enabled Underwater Surveillance System (부이형 수중감시 시스템에서 계류라인의 구조 설계)

  • The buoy-enabled underwater surveillance system is a device that is installed in a particular sea area and operated for a certain period of tine and moved to another sea area after recovery. In this paper, a mooring method which is applied for a buoy-enabled underwater surveillance system was selected to maintain installation and enure stable operation. Also, the structure of the mooring line was designed. Two-point mooring method was selected considering interference with the communication cable of array-assembly. The composite structure of buoy chain, nylon rope, and anchor chain is designed as the basic component of mooring line. For the verification of design, a numerical simulation and wave tank experiment were performed. Their results were confirmed similarity in test condition. Finally, the mooring lines were designed for the environment of the sea trial location. The mooring line produced by the final design confirmed the stability above the significant wave height considered in the design on the sea trial.

An Experimental and Numerical Study on the Survivability of a Long Pipe-Type Buoy Structure in Waves (긴 파이프로 이뤄진 세장형 부이 구조물의 파랑 중 생존성에 관한 모형시험 및 수치해석 연구)

  • In this study, experimental and numerical analysis were performed on the survivability of a long pipe-type buoy structure in waves. The buoy structure is an articulated tower consisting of an upper structure, buoyancy module, and gravity anchor with long pipes forming the base frame. A series of experiment were performed in the ocean engineering basin of KRISO with the scaled model of 1/ 22 to evaluate the survivability of the buoy structure at West Sea in South Korea. Survival condition was considered as the wave of 50 year return period. Additional experiments were performed to investigate the effects of current and wave period. The factors considered for the evaluation of the buoy's survival were the pitch angle of the structure, anchor reaction force, and the number of submergence of the upper structure. Numerical simulations were carried out with the OrcaFlex, the commercial program for the mooring analysis, with the aim of performing mutual validation with the experimental results. Based on the evaluation, the behavior characteristics of the buoy structure were first examined according to the tidal conditions. The changes were investigated for the pitch angle and anchor reaction force at HAT and LAT conditions, and the results directly compared with those obtained from numerical simulation. Secondly, the response characteristics of the buoy structure were studied depending on the wave period and the presence of current velocity. Third, the number of submergence through video analysis was compared with the simulation results in relation to the submergence of the upper structure. Finally, the simulation results for structural responses which were not directly measured in the experiment were presented, and the structural safety discussed in the survival waves. Through a series of survivability evaluation studies, the behavior characteristics of the buoy structure were examined in survival waves. The vulnerability and utility of the buoy structure were investigated through the sensitivity studies of waves, current, and tides.

  • A study on the new active circulation type oil-water separation system including buoyancy type guidance system was carried out in this paper. Oil-water separation system is composed of several oil separation steps. Buoy type oil guiding system was developed based on the difference of buoyance of water and oil. The design speed of this vessel is 25 knots.

  • A data assimilation system for a 1-dimensional mixed layer model has been constructed using the adjoint method. The classical adjoint method does not work well for the mixed layer variabilities due to the occurrence of spikes in the gradient of the cost function. To solve this problem, the two techniques of scaling the cost function and optimization in the frequency space are used. As a result, the heat flux can be reliably estimated with an accuracy of 8Wm$^{-2}$ rms error in the identical twin experiments. We then applied this system to the tropical Pacific TOGA-TAO buoy data. The air-sea heat flux as well as the mixed layer variability were estimated in close approximation to the buoy data, particularly on time scales longer than the seasonal one.

Design and Verification of a Wave Gauge Using Digital Images (디지털 영상을 이용한 파고계 개발 및 검증)

  • A new wave gauge using digital image of waves is developed and the performances are tested by wave tank experiments. This wave gauge uses frame frequency of 1/15 sec, conversion of analog images to digital images, and large capacity of hard disk. This wave gauge measures wave heights by detecting the buoy movement automatically from the image, where the buoy moves with the same phase of water surface. The comparison of automatic measurements of wave heights to the true data is reasonable. The wave gauge can be improved to measure wave heights on shallow waters near shorelines.

  • Moored ocean buoys are technically feasible approach for making sustained time series observation in the oceans and will be an important component of any long-term ocean observing system. The 3M disc buoy carried Zeno 3200, MCCB, Orbcomm, Global Star and Bluetooth module. The deployments have relied on Orbcomm and Global Star as the primary satellite communications system. In addition to detailing our practical experience in the use of Orbcomm and Global Star as high latitudes, we will present some of scientific sensor results regarding real-time oceanographic and meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wave height and etc. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a small-scale buoy sensor network. One of the major challenges is that the network is hard to access after its deployment and hence both hardware and software must be robust and reliable.

  • The egg structure and shape of the skin parasite, Entobdella hippoglossi from the Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus was examined using scanning electronic microscope. The newly produced eggs of E. hippoglossi were yellowish in color and tetrahedral in shape. The eggs were entwined together in a complicated chain-like fashion by a long filament. The appendage showed the presence of buoy-like structures. The buoy-like structures on the appendage of the eggs of E. hippoglossi in the present study were totally different from other sticky droplets. It is suggested that these structures are not sticky droplets but buoys for floating eggs which have entwined together on the bottom of the sea. It seems that these buoy-like structures may be needed for preventing the eggs from being covered by mud or particles and thus maintaining the eggs in an oxygenated environment.

Development of the Prototype of Wave Energy Converter by a Pulley System (도르래를 이용한 파력발전기 프로토 타입 개발에 관한 연구)

  • From the ancient times, there are waves in the ocean. And all the moving body have energy. We have a kind of hope to convert the wave energy into electric one. Finally we can find out a power generator mechanism that mainly use the principle of pulleys. We have made drawings for this and completed the wave energy converter. This wave energy converter consists of several pulleys, rope, generator, buoys and anchors. The distance between an anchor and buoy is changed according to the hight of waves. Several sets of anchors, pulleys and buoys can make the movement of rope, and the ropes wind up a converter axis. In case of 1 meter movement of the buoy, the winding distance will be amplified 2 or 3 times if we use several moving and fixed pulleys. Based on this concept, we developed 2 kind of prototypes. One is for the test in the laboratory and the other is for the field test. Through the two test, we could confirm the usability of this mechanism.

A Study on the Wave Height Distribution around Oil-Buoy in front of Detached Breakwater (방파제 전면에 설치된 원유부이 주변해역의 파랑분포에 관한 연구)

  • As a part of the development program of Ulsan Port, construction of detached breakwater is planned. In Ulsan Port, several oil-buoys exist. If the detached breakwaters have been constructed, these oil-buoys will be located within 1 km from the planned breakwaters. Construction of the breakwaters gives rise to changes of wave conditions on the sea areas, especially in front of the breakwater and it affects mooring of tankers, which supply oil to the oil-buoy In this study, in order to calculate standing wave distribution after construction of a breakwater, numerical model is proposed based on unsteady mild slope equation. Calculation is performed by testing different wave heights, directions and reflection coefficients of breakwater. In addition, the influence to working condition of tanker moored at the oil-buoy is evaluated by using measured wave conditions and calculated results.
