In blood examination, WBC, amylase, alkaline phosphatase value showed higher than normal value, so we diagnosed as acute pancreatitis. The bulldog was treated with fluid therapy as Ringer's solution, saline and 5% dextrose, and antibiotics as mixed penicillin with streptomycin, and cephazolin. To prevent shock, dexamethasone was medicated in early time. Also the bulldog was medicated as banamine, vitamine K, atropine and cimetidine. • A female English bulldog was gave birth two neonates by cesarean section on the sixty one days after mating, but both neonates were died soon after birth. The bodies of neonates were diagnosed using radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and necropsy immediately after death. Both neonates had caudal regression syndrome, butterfly vertebra, hydrocephalus, umbilical hernia, cleft palate and bow-legged hind-limb. At necropsy, neonates had mild fetal anasarca, cleft lip and the skull was remained non-union. At thoracic cavity, only three ribs and thoracic spines were existed and patent ductus arteriosus was found. At abnormal cavity, the renal ectopia was found with abnormal morphology. In the present case, those English bulldog neonates with multiple congenital malformation syndromes seriously suffered vertebral column anomalies and that may induced by neural tube defects in during embryonic period. To prevent congenital malformation occurring in English bulldog, further in depth studies are needed for the breed specific genetic diversity and for the reason of behind genetic abnormality in these breed.

  • An orchiopexy was performed in an 18-month old adult English bulldog with bilateral cryptorchidism. One month postoperatively, the dog was twice-treated with GnRH (50 ug/kg) at an interval of 2 weeks. Semen was collected and evaluated before and after surgery. Fertility was determined by artificial insemination. No spermatozoa were observed before orchiopexy and 2 months postoperatively. However, 6 live sperm were detected 4 months postoperatively and normal sperm characteristics (except sperm concentration) were present 7 months postoperatively. A female bulldog, inseminated with the semen from the bulldog 8 months postoperatively, delivered 6 offsprings. Spermatogenesis and spermatozoa with fertilizing capacity were recovered by postpubertal orchiopexy and GnRH therapy in a bilateral cryptorchid dog.

  • A 3-month-old, intact male French bulldog was suspected of deafness. The dog was irresponsive to environmental noises generated out of sight, but normal responses were noted for visual stimuli. No abnormalities were observed on the neurological, otoscopic, radiographic, and blood examinations. To diagnose the apparent deafness, brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) was recorded in the presented dog together with a normal dog. While the BAEP from the control dog showed a normal wave consisting of 5 peaks, absence of all peaks was noted in the suspected deaf dog. Therefore the dog was definitively diagnosed as bilaterally congenital sensorineural deafness.

  • A two-year-old, female English bulldog was referred for breeding by artificial insemination with frozen semen of male English bulldog, a litter of female bulldog's grandfather. Intrauterine artificial insemination was done two days after the ovulation day. Sperm was evaluated after thawing by computer assisted sperm analyzer, and its motility was 89.8% with normal shape. Pregnancy bearing eight fetuses was diagnosed by ultrasonography and radiography. Cesarean section was performed sixty days after the artificial insemination. Eight pups were delivered with safe, but the entire pup had abnormalities including severe bow-legged malformations, cleft lip, cleft palate, and enlarged cranial part.

  • An English Bulldog 4 years old, Queen was hospitalized three weeks after mating as anorexia, decreased activity, hamorrhagic pus like vaginal discharge, and high fever. It was very difficult to diagnose by clinical signs and clinical pathological findings, at the first. Eenlarged uterus cavity, fluid accumulation in uterus was clearly identified by radiography and ultrasonography. The results suggest that X-ray and ultrasound is very important diagnostic method for pyometra to know disease progress.

  • A four-year old, indoor-living neutered male Old English Bulldog was presented for generalized ulcerative dermatitis. Generalized alopecia and multifocal papules and ulcers with crusting were observed mainly in the dorsal trunk. Cytology of the skin lesions revealed a pyogranulomatous inflammation comprising macrophages and nondegenerate neutrophils. Histopathology also revealed a nodular dermatitis characterized by mixed infiltration of monocytes and neutrophils involving the superficial and deep dermis. Neither of bacteria nor fungus was identified in microscopic exam and culture. From those findings, a diagnosis of cutaneous sterile pyogranuloma/granuloma syndrome (SPGS) was made. Treatment with immunosuppressive drugs of prednisone and cyclosporine was performed and visible ulcerative skin lesions were resolved after 4 weeks of initiation of therapy. Treatment with combination of cyclosporine and prednisone may be effective for the case of SPGS.

  • Three dogs (a 30-month-old spayed female English bulldog; a 12-month-old castrated male English bulldog; a 19-month-old castrated male Shar-pei dog) were presented to the Dana Animal Hospital Eye Center with clinical signs of blepharospasm, epiphora, and ocular discharge (serous to mucopurulent) in one or both eyes. Through ophthalmic examination, the dogs (5 eyes) were diagnosed with trichiasis caused by upper and lower eyelid entropion, including the lateral canthus. To correct upper and lower eyelid entropion, modification using a combination of the Stades forced granulation method for upper eyelid entropion and Hotz-Celsus procedure for lower eyelid entropion was performed in all cases. At the last follow-up, mean 274 days after surgery, clinical signs disappeared and no recurrences of entropion were observed in any of the 3 dogs (5 eyes). Therefore, the combination of the Stades forced granulation method and Hotz-Celsus procedure may be an effective treatment for trichiasis caused by upper and lower eyelid entropion in dogs.
