  • This study is concerned with the stability of laminated composite plates modelled using Eringen's nonlocal differential model (ENDM) and a novel refined-hyperbolic-shear-deformable plate theory. The plate is assumed to be lying on the Pasternak elastic foundation and is under the influence of an in-plane magnetic field. The governing equations and boundary conditions are obtained through Hamilton's principle. An analytical approach considering Navier series is used to fine the critical bucking load. After verifying with existing results for the reduced cases, the present model is then used to study buckling of the laminated composite plate. Numerical results demonstrate clearly for the first time the roles of size effects, magnetic field, foundation parameters, moduli ratio, geometry, lay-up numbers and sequences, fiber orientations, and boundary conditions. These results could be useful for designing better composites and can further serve as benchmarks for future studies on the laminated composite plates.

  • This paper explains the development of a concurrent engineering system for the rlesign of composite structures. The concurrent engineering system is developed to meet the demand for the better quality products with lower production cost and time. In this study, to compose the architecture of concurrent engineering system, the commercial and noncommercial programs related to design and analysis of composite structures are surveyed and classified. The concurrent engineering system is including various design modules such as design/analysis of composite structures using CLPT and FEM, buckling and post bucking analysis, thermo-elastic analysis of carbon-carbon composite, and optimum design using expert system and genetic algorithm. For the integration and management of softwares, the concurrent engineering system is realized by Microsoft visual $C++{^\circledR}$ that provide multi-tasking and graphic user interface environment.

  • To investigate the effect of material and precess variables on stamping formability of sheet materials, simulations for the cup drawing and the Yoshida buckling test were carried out using ABAQUS, commercial nonlinear finite element analysis code. The various factor effects on stamping formability of sheet materials were analyzed by the designed process according to Taguch's orthogonal array experiment. Cup drawing simulation showed that local neckling was very sensitive to plastic anisotropy parameter of sheet material and friction coefficient between sheet and tool interface. Simulations for the Yoshida buckling test have clarified that buckling behaviour of sheet material was mostly susceptible to yield stress and sheet thickness mostly. However, plastic anisotropy parameter and strain hardening coefficient affect moderately buckling behaviour of steel sheets after the buckling initiation.

  • In this study the overstrength factors of medium to low-rise bucking restrained braced frames (BRBF) were evaluated. Various design variables, such as number of stories, span length, yield strength of the brace, level of earthquake load, and the response modification factors. The overstrength factors were obtained using the nonlinear static analysis following the procedure proposed by ATC-19. According to the analysis results, the overstrength factors obtained from this study were generally larger than those proposed in 'AISC/SEAOC Recommended Provisions for BRBF'.

  • The single layer latticed dome is very sensitive on the slenderness ratio and half open angle of the elements, load condition, and the connection type because it is organized by a lot of thin elements, so we have to use the geometrically nonlinear buckling load when the buckling of the structures is analyzed. But, it is very difficult to design the single layer latticed domes considered all renditions. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to propose the appropriate design method of the single layer latticed dome considered the geometrically nonlinear buckling load in base of the linear buckling load by the eigenvalue analysis.

  • Concrete shear wall with opening is modeled as a rectangular thin plate. The stability analysis results are presented by the buckling coefficient, k, for two different boundary conditions. The other parameters whose variation have been considered are the ratio of the bending induced force to gravity force, a, the ratio of the horizontal shear force to the gravity force ratio, A and the change of location and the size of perforated part. To obtain the results by finite element method, an example plate has been divided into 27*9 square elements. Four node rectangular c.deg. continuous finite elements having three degrees of freedom per each node is adopted. It is generally concluded that the buckling coefficients decrease as the size of hole increases, and the location of hole moves to free edge of the wall.

  • This stability of a plate structure is very crucial problem which results in wrinkle and bucking. In this study, the effect of the pattern of spot-welding points of the two rectangular plates on the compressive buckling load is studied with respect to the thickness, aspect ratio of plates, number of welding spots. buckling coefficient of the plate not welded was compared with that of two plates with various thickness to extract the effect of thickness. The effect of number of welding spots are studied in tow directions, longitudinal and transverse directions. The conclusions obtained were that the reinforcement effect was maximized when the aspect ratio was close to 1.25 and that the effect of number of welding spots in transverse direction was large than that in longitudinal direction.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the criteria of the width-to-thickness ratio and to evaluate the buckling strength of high strength steel beam-columns and to compare their buckling strength with design codes, which are the Limit State Design code and the Allowable Stress Desogn code(drift). SM520TMC and SM570Q class steels are used for high strength steels. The coupon test and the stub column test were carried out to investigate the properties of high strength steels and the stress-strain curves of stub columns. The buckling strength of high strength steel beam-columns are assessed by numerical analysis used axial force, moment and curvature relationships.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the variables affected the confinement for the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The structural performance of T-shaped walls was advanced by the transverse reinforcement which restrained the concrete subjected to compressive stress. If the arrangement of transverse reinforcement was not suitable for the confinement, T-shaped walls happened the brittle failure by web crushing or bucking of vertical reinforcement at the compression zone. It is necessary to confine transverse reinforcement in order to prevent the these failure. But the location of neutral axis and the magnitude of ultimate strain vary according to the section shape, a ratio of axial load, a ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, an aspect ratio and the reinforcement ratio. Therefore, the objective of this research is to grasp the location of neutral axis and the range which needs for the confinement of transverse reinforcement through the results of the sectional analysis which varies the ratio of axial load and the ratio of vertical reinforcement.
