In a strengthened bridge deck which received increased service loads, failure patterns of bridge deck vary depending on deck thickness, compressive strength of concrete, yielding strength of reinforcement, reinforcement ratio and additional strengthening ratio. General failure pattern that is most commonly reported as punching shear failure after the main rebar yields, followed by yielding of distributing rebar. In this paper, by Proposing a limit to the amount of strengthening material, a brittle failure can be prevented and a ductile failure mode similar to that developed in unstrengthened deck is derived. In order to calculated the limit strengthening ratio, the yield line theory and previously proposed plastic punching shear model have been used

In this study, the PSC girder bridge retrofitted with external tendons is tested to verify the strengthening effects. We measure the variations of the displacement and strain at mid-span of each beam as external tendons are removed in sequence. The structural behavior of the bridge are examined using controlled truck load tests for the systems before and after all external tendons were removed. From the test results, the characteristics of structural behavior of the bridge do not change significantly, but the natural frequency is decreased after the external tendons are removed. The strengthening effects of bridges can be exactly estimated by analytical methods some extent. As a result of this study, when a PSC girder bridge is deteriorated, the bridge can be retrofitted effectively by External Prestressing Strengthening Method, and the strengthening effects can be predicted through accurate structural analysis.

Concrete can be defective for several reasons, including an inadequate design, material selection of workmanship, failure to appreciate the hazards associated with prevailing enviromental conditions. Concrete can also deteriorate or be damaged in use. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of existing concrete strucutres. On the basis of these reasons, they must be performed for repair or rehabilitation. Presently, strengthening methods of R/C structure used in Korea, are an enlargement of concrete member, strengthening with steel plate or CFRP on the R/C structure. It has been widely estabilished that strengthening effect of CFRP is superior to steel plate in terms of it's lighter unit weight and higher tensile strength. But there are no construction results of CFRP on the civil R/C structure in Korea. The strengthening design technique with CFRP, it's const겨ction, and it's strengthening effect for deteriorated R/C rahmen bridge is introduced in this paper.

This paper describes the experimental study on seismic strengthening effect of circular bridge columns with poor lap-splice details using FRP(Fiber Reinforced Plastic) wrapping, The as-built column suffered brittle failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or any ductility, The strengthening columns using FRP wrapping showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect.

Considerable research has been done to study the fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete bridge deck which is strengthened by carbon fiber sheets. Before the strengthening, the specimen was damaged by repeated loads with various repeat cycles. The results of this study show that strengthening efficiency is getting rised in the lower pre-damaged degree. When the fatigue damaged bridge-deck is strengthened, the crack propagation may be controled efficiently
Numerous PSC bridges are stregthened by the combined use of continuity of simple spans and addition of external prestressing. In this case prestressing sequences should be carefully checked due to the effect on the stress and camber of girders and slab. Various prestressing sequences were applied in this field test and measured values were analysed. This results show that preatressing sequences affact the stress and deflection of bridge members, so the prestressing sequence should be considered at the desist and construction stages of deteriorated bridges.

Different to other social infrastructures, bridge elements or bridges can be damaged or collapsed and this may cause death toll and severe social and economical damage, bridges should be managed to maintain a safety level. Diverse strengthening methods is developed to improve a deteriorated bridge performance up to original design level. But rational decision-making process and methodologies to select a optimum strengthening method are absence yet in Korea. This paper therefore derived items and proposed methodologies for quantity estimate considering uncertainty to select a optimum strengthening method among conceptually designed alternatives. And also, to demonstrate the applicability and verification of the proposed approach, it was applied to select the optimum strengthening method for the deteriorated T-shape concrete girder bridge. The model and the procedure can greatly contribute to the uncertainty-oriented alternative selection.

External pre-stressing strengthening method is the most popular way to strengthen concrete structures because of its efficiency and economic advantage. The laboratory test was performed to reinforce the slave bridge with the external tendon strengthening by longitudinally and transversally, which is concerned with formal feature of slave bridge, generally. Based on this test, anchoring device to strengthen the external tendon strengthening method was established and its strengthening effects were verified by evaluating the load bearing capacity.

After introduction of the earthquake resistant design code, it is required to achieve seismic performance of existing bridges as well as earthquake resistant design of new bridges. The achievement of seismic performance for existing bridges should satisfy the no collapse requirement based on the basic concept of earthquake resistant design, therefore, various methods with different strengthening scale should be suggested according to bridge types and importance categories. At present for typical bridges, most studied and applied strengthening methods are bearing change, pier strengthening and shear key installation for improvement of seismic performance. In this study a typical existing bridge, for which earthquake resistant design is not considered, is selected as an analysis bridge. Design changes are carried out to satisfy the no collapse requirement by way of the ductile failure mechanism and seismic performances are checked. It is shown that the seismic performance of existing bridges can be achieved by way of redesign of bridge system, e.g. determination of pier design section for substructure and change of bearing function for connections between super/sub-structure.

The present study proposes the strengthening method to use Conclinic Advanced FiberWrep(CAF) so as to improve Load Carrying Capacity of the RC slab bridge. In order to evaluate the strengthening performance, we strengthen 50cm per unit-width of CAF to the slab's bottom of the test bridge that designed with DB 18, then perform Static and Dynamic Field Load Test. As a result of this, 14.7% of the maximum displacement, 5.0% of the strain and 33.7% of the impact factor are reduced after strengthening. At the middle of the test spans, nominal resisting ratio is increased by 27% and Service Load Carrying Capacity is increased by 44.6%, 48.9% of each span 1 and 2. In conclusion, this study indicates that the strengthening method using CAF is very effective to improve the deteriorated RC slab bridge designed with DB 18, to the DB 24 of the first class bridge design load.
