  • Scour plays a principal role in maintaining stability and durability of bridges. Especially, in case of severe flood events, flow rate getting increase in a short time, scour can impede the functioning of bridges to the extent that they must be taken out of operation, and even can imperil their stability and structural integrity. In Korea, about 100 bridges were collapsed or damaged every you. Sufficient field investigation, however, was not made and, therefore, no adequate countermeasure for scouring is available. In this study, literature on scour-protection methods are reviewed and data on countermeasures of scouring which were collected through field investigation in central region of Korea are analyzed.

  • The results of laboratory experiments on the clear-water scour of cohesionless bed sediment for three types of pier shape were presented. According to the experimental data, the local scouring around the pier was initiated at $V/V_c=0.4{\sim}0.5$ and $Fr_p{\fallingdotseq}0.2$, and the relative local scour depths linearly increased with respect to the velocity ratio and the pier Froude number. The relative scour depth had the linear relationship with ${\tau}_r$ for ${\tau}_r$ < $10^{-4}$, but it tends to become constant for ${\tau}_r$ > $10^{-4}$, irrespective of ${\tau}_r$. And also the relative scour depths showed the close relationship with both the geometric standard deviation and the pier shape.

  • Many researches have been devoted to developing a model fur bridge scour analysis which can consider both of the erosive potential of flowing water and the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. The scour rate apparatus that can quantify the erosion rate of the soil has been developed by virtue of the extensive efforts. The scour rate tests were performed on 3 types of the remolding clay samples using the scour rate apparatus. The erosion characteristics of the fine-grained soil samples according to the variation of the remolding loads are examined and the correlation between the soil properties and erosion rates is also analyzed. The results of the tests and analyses show that the soil properties, especially the dry unit weight and the shear strength of the soil have great influence on the erosion characteristics.

  • In this paper, the experiments to decide the riprap size for the local scour protection at bridge piers and the coefficients of attack angle were conducted. A formula for the decision of the riprap size and a figure for the coefficients of attack angle were suggested based upon the experimental results. The coefficients of attack angle indicate different values based on the variation of the length-width ratio of bridge pier and the coefficients are increased by the increment of the attack angle. In this paper, the experiments using the piers having the opening ratios of 90%, 92.86% and 95% were conducted. Also, the attack angles 0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and 60$^{\circ}$ as well as four different length-width ratios of the bridge pier were utilized. The suggested formula were compared with 6 different formulas and the riprap sizes calculated using the equation suggested in this paper indicate the similar patterns with the formula suggested by Richardson. The suggested formula in this paper can be widely applied in the riprap design for the local scour protection around the bridge pier with the consideration of the attack angle to the flow.

  • A new apparatus called the EFA (Erosion Function Apparatus) has been built and tested to measure the erodibility of fine-grained soils. The EFA is a simple test to predict the erosion rate of fine-grained soils along with the corresponding velocity and shear stress. In addition, it is advantageous in predicting the scour rate for actual soil samples from bridge sites. The plot of erosion rate versus shear stress is the result of an EFA test. It Indicates the critical shear stress at which erosion starts and the rate of erosion beyond that shear stress. In order to measure the erodibilities of various soils, 14 Shelby Tube soil samples are collected from the actual bridge sites and tested using the EFA. The results of the EFA tests which are the relationships between erosion rates and shear stresses are presented in this paper and research continues to develop the correlation between the erosion function and the soil properties.
