A reliability based calibration of dynamic load allowance (DLA) of highway bridge is performed by numerical dynamic analysis of various types of bridges taking into account of the road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interaction. A total of 10 simply supported bridges with three girder types in the form of prestressed concrete girder, steel plate girder, and steel box girder is analyzed. The cross sections recommended in "The Standardized Design of Highway Bridge Superstructure" by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for the prestressed concrete girder bridges and steel plate girder bridges while the box girder bridges are designed by the LRFD method. Ten sets of road surface roughness for each bridge are generated from power spectral density (PSD) function by assuming the roadway as "Average Road". A three dimensionally modeled 5-axle tractor-trailer with its gross weight the same as that of DB-24 design truck is used in the dynamic analysis. For the finite element modeling of superstructure, beam elements for the main girder, shell elements for concrete deck, and rigid links between main girder and concrete deck are used. The statistical mean and coefficient of variation of DLA are obtained from a total of 100 DLA results for 10 different bridges with each having 10 sets of road surface roughness. Applying the DLA statistics obtained, the DLA is finally calibrated in a reliability based LRFD format by using the formula developed in the calibration of OHBDC code.
A method of making simply supported girders continuous is described for bridges with spans of 30-45 m. The splicing method takes advantage of an induced secondary moment to transform the self-weight stresses in the precast simply supported girders into values representative of a continuous girder. The secondary moment results from prestressing of continuity tendons and detensioning of temporary tendons in the girders. Preliminary sections are selected for spliced U-girder bridges with a range of span lengths. Use of the proposed technique results in girder depth reductions of 500-800 mm when compared to standard simply supported I-girder bridges. The flexural behavior of an example bridge with 40-m spans is examined to illustrate the necessary considerations for determining the optimum sequence of splicing operations.

To analyzing the validity for using the stiffness ratio in evaluating edge stiffness effect of the composite girder bridges, modification factors are analyzed with changing girder spacing. The relation between stiffness ratio, loading type, girder spacing and modification factors is analyzed. From the results of comparing modification factors analyzed from the field loading test and the established design method with the modification factor analyzed from this study, it was concluded that evaluating the edge stiffness effect using stiffness ratio is possible.
Shear connectors are generally used to link the slab and girders together in slab-on-girder bridge structures. Damage of shear connectors in such structures will result in shear slippage between the slab and girders, which significantly reduces the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. Because shear connectors are buried inside the structure, routine visual inspection is not able to detect conditions of shear connectors. A few methods have been proposed in the literature to detect the condition of shear connectors based on vibration measurements. This paper proposes a different dynamic condition assessment approach to identify the damage of shear connectors in slab-on-girder bridge structures based on power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT). PSDT formulates the relationship between the auto-spectral densities of two responses in the frequency domain. It can be used to identify shear connector conditions with or without reference data of the undamaged structure (or the baseline). Measured impact force and acceleration responses from hammer tests are analyzed to obtain the frequency response functions at sensor locations by experimental modal analysis. PSDT from the slab response to the girder response is derived with the obtained frequency response functions. PSDT vectors in the undamaged and damaged states can be compared to identify the damage of shear connectors. When the baseline is not available, as in most practical cases, PSDT vectors from the measured response at a reference sensor to those of the slab and girder in the damaged state can be used to detect the damage of shear connectors. Numerical and experimental studies on a concrete slab supported by two steel girders are conducted to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach. Identification results demonstrate that damages of shear connectors are identified accurately and efficiently with and without the baseline. The proposed method is also used to evaluate the conditions of shear connectors in a real composite bridge with in-field testing data.
Purpose: The primery objecting of this paper is to explore the seismics fragility of curved bridge based on the change of girder section. Method: The cross section of the bridge structure was constructed with I, T, and Box shapes and then, in order to perform the seismic fragility 24 seismic ground motions were used, including Gyeongju Pohang Earthquake. Result: Fist, T-Shape of the bridge strucrue was much fragility in terms of the stress on girder section, in comparison to the other shapes. The seismic fragilies of the structures with respect to displacement(drift ratio), however, were shown simialr. Conclusion: In other to wvaluation the seismic fragility of curved structure using different girder shapes, analytical models of the structure were constructed and then, the probability failure of box-shape girder was shown lower probability. In further, Parametric studies of curved structures must be conducted.

This study is concerned with the optimum design of LB-Deck plate girder bridge. The optimizing problems of the composite bridge are formulated with objective functions and constraints. The objective functions are formulated as the total cost of the concrete deck and steel girder construction and the constraints are derived by criteria with respect to the Korean Highway bridge design. The optimizing algorithm using SUMT for optimum design of the Simple span, 2-Span, 3-span LB-deck plate and general RC-steel composite girder bridges (L=60m) which act live load(DB24). And their optimum numerical results are compares and analyzed to examine the possibility of optimization, the application and convergency of this optimizing algorithm.

Recently, advanced transit systems are being constructed to reduce traffic congestions in metropolitan areas. For these projects, curved bridges with various curvatures are required. Many curved bridges in the past were constructed using aesthetically unpleasant straight beams with curved slabs or expensive curved steel box girders with curved slabs. Therefore, many recent studies have been performed to develop less expensive and very safe precast prestressed concrete (PSC) curved girder. One method of reducing the construction cost of a PSC curved girder is to use a reusable formwork that can easily be adjusted to change the curvature and length of a girder. A reusable and curvature/dimension adjustable formwork called Multi-tasking formwork is developed for constructing efficient precast PSC curved girders. With the Multi-tasking formwork, two 40 m precast PSC box girders with different curvatures were constructed to build a two-girder curved bridge for a static flexural test to evaluate its safety and serviceability performance. The static flexural test results showed that the initial cracking load was 1400 kN, exceeding the design cracking load of 450 kN. Also, the code allowed deflection of 50 mm occurred at a load of 1800 kN, verifying the safety and serviceability of the precast PSC curved bridge constructed using the multi-tasking formwork.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the redundancy in two plate-girder bridges, which are generally classified as non-redundant load path structures. The study was performed at a time when one of the two girders was damaged. The bottom lateral bracing was considered the experimental variable, and two 1/5-scale bridge specimens of simple span with and without a lateral bracing system were fabricated. Loading tests were first performed on the intact specimens without a cracked girder, within an elastic range. Thereafter, the ultimate loading tests were conducted on the damaged specimens with an induced crack at the center of a girder. The test results showed that the cross beams and the concrete deck redistributed some of the load to the uncracked girder, but the lateral bracing system played an important role in improving the redundancy during the damage and was also effective for load redistribution even when the bridge was intact.

Bending and axial compressive stresses are distributed across the whole upper flange of a box girder bridge which has the span-to-depth ratio (B/L) of below 0.5, according to Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, 2005). Shear lag phenomenon, however, can take place in the construction phase of cable-stayed bridge, in which stresses combining bending moment due to dead weight and cable vertical compression are induced. This study aims to analyze the effective width of flange over which composite stresses are given, which should be calculated during the construction phase of stiffening girder of single plane cable-stayed box girder bridge. The study results indicate that the full width of stiffening girder can be regarded as the effective flange width when the span-to-depth ratio for the deck is below 0.38. In other words, the area, where shear lag is taken into consideration, is larger than the width of box girder in single plane cable-stayed box girder bridges. Therefore, the current practice of considering the full width as the effective flange width regardless of changes of the span-to-depth ratio during the construction stage can produce an unsafe bridge. If the effective flange width is determined according to the single span structural system in the early stage of construction when the span-to depth ratio for the deck is high and composite stresses of every part expect each end of the bridge are calculated, it can result in a safe structural design. Since the span-to-depth ratio gradually decreases, however, it is appropriate to determine the effective width of flange on the basis of the full width and the cantilever structural system.
As bridge conditions in the United States continue to deteriorate, rapid bridge replacement procedures are needed. Decked precast prestressed concrete (DPPC) girders are used for rapid bridge construction because the bridge deck is precast with the girders eliminating the need for a cast-in-place slab. One of the concerns with using DPPC girders as a bridge construction option is the durability of the longitudinal joints between girders. The objectives of this paper were to propose a method to use a spring element modeling procedure for representing welded steel connector assemblies between adjacent girders in DPPC girder bridges, perform a preliminary study of bridge performance under multiple loading scenarios and bridge configurations, and discuss model flexibility for accommodating future field data for model verification. The spring elements have potential to represent the contribution of joint grout materials by altering the spring stiffness.
