This study is intended to propose a precast bridge deck system, which has ribbed loop joints between the decks and lacks internal tendons to improve the workability of existing precast deck system. A composite bridge deck specimen was fabricated using the proposed precast deck system, and static and fatigue load tests were conducted to evaluate the structural behavior and the crack pattern of the deck. Leakage test of the deck joints was also conducted and finite element analysis was carried out to compare with the test results.
To substitute conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, glass composite precast bridge deck - Delta Deck/sup TM/, which possesses advantages of light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance and durability, is developed for the DB24 truck load. Pultruded composite bridge deck is designed and fabricated. To verify serviceability and structural safety, finite element analysis, structural testing such as flexural test, local fatigue test, flexural fatigue test and field tests are conducted. In this paper structural characteristics of developed deck and its field application in Korea is presented.
PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the behavior of orthotropic steel bridge deck pavement using three-dimensional finite element analysis and full-scale wheel load testing. METHODS: Since the layer thickness and material properties used in the bridge deck pavement are different from its condition, it is very difficult to measure and access the behavior of bridge deck pavement in the field. To solve this problem, the full-scale wheel load testing was conducted on the PSMA/Mastic bridge deck pavement and the deflection of bridge deck and horizontal tensile strain on top of pavement were measured under the loading condition. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to predict the behavior of bridge deck pavement and the predicted deflection and tensile strain values are compared with measured values from the wheel loading testing. RESULTS: Test results showed that the predicted deflections are 10% lower than measured ones and the error between predicted and measured horizontal tensile strain values is less than 2% in the critical location. CONCLUSIONS: The fact indicates that the proposed the analysis is found to be accurate for estimating the behavior of bridge deck pavements.
Considerable research was done to study the fatigue behavior of the reinforced concrete bridge deck which is strengthened by carbon fiber. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the fatigue behavior and strengthening effects of the strengthened bridge deck with grid type carbon fiber plastic. The results of this study show that the displacement and the total released energy of strengthening of bridge deck are greater than the case of unstrengthened bridge deck. By strengthening of bridge deck, applied load is so distributed on whole deck member that crack concentration is efficiently controled.
LB-DECK is used for both of permanent formwork and structural component with cast-in place concrete of concrete bridge decks. Current Korean design code recommends that concrete bridge deck with precast concrete panels have to be designed only using conventional flexural design method and does not allow the empirical design method which is based on punching shear strength of bridge deck. This paper present experimental test results of punching shear strength of concrete bridge decks with LB-DECKs. Six full-scaled concrete bridge decks, which are designed with the empirical design method, are fabricated with variation of girder spacings. Test results are presented in the paper and compared with the code predictions of ACI 318, CEB-FIP MC90. Based on the test results, it is proposed that LB-DECK is suitable to apply the empirical design method for concrete bridge decks.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the optimum thickness of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement. The application of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement with micro-silica was introduced to north America in the early 1980's. In order to decide the optimum thickness of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement, we conducted Finite Element Method analysis with Incheon Grand Bridge constructed by SAMSUNG E&C. From the FEM results, a thickness of five centimeters of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement with micro-silica is considered as a resonable value compared with the conventional asphalt bridge deck pavement.
Shear studs are often used to connect steel girders and concrete deck to form a composite bridge system. The application of precast concrete deck to steel-concrete composite bridges can improve the strength of decks and reduce the shrinkage and creep effect on the long-term behavior of structures. How to ensure the connection between steel girders and concrete deck directly influences the composite behavior between steel girder and precast concrete deck as well as the behavior of the structure system. Compared with traditional multi-I girder systems, a twin-I girder composite bridge system is more simplified but may lead to additional requirements on the shear studs connecting steel girders and decks due to the larger girder spacing. Up to date, only very limited quantity of researches has been conducted regarding the behavior of shear studs on twin-I girder bridge systems. One convenient way for steel composite bridge system is to cast concrete deck in place with shear studs uniformly-distributed along the span direction. For steel composite bridge system using precast concrete deck, voids are included in the precast concrete deck segments, and they are casted with cast-in-place concrete after the concrete segments are erected. In this paper, several sets of push-out tests are conducted, which are used to investigate the heavier of shear studs within the voids in the precast concrete deck. The test data are analyzed and compared with those from finite element models. A simplified shear stud model is proposed using a beam element instead of solid elements. It is used in the finite element model analyses of the twin-I girder composite bridge system to relieve the computational efforts of the shear studs. Additionally, a parametric study is developed to find the effects of void size, void spacing, and shear stud diameter and spacing. Finally, the recommendations are given for the design of precast deck using void for twin I-girder bridge systems.
Future bridge decks must have high load-resistance capacity as well as fatigue strength to withstand the increase in traffic loading and the increase in span length between girders due to the decrease in the number of main girders. Steel-concrete composite bridge decks may be proper deck types to satisfy such requirements. To promote the application of composite bridge decks, a rational process to predict and evaluate the fatigue behavior of steel concrete composite bridge deck is required. Various types of steel-concrete composite bridge decks have been developed in many countries. In this study, combining advantages of the existing composite deck types, a new type of composite bridge deck is proposed. An experimental study is performed to examine the fatigue behavior of the proposed composite bridge deck. This composite bridge deck consists of corrugated steel sheet, welded T-beams, stud-type shear connectors and reinforced concrete filler. The fatigue tests are conducted under four-point bending test with three different stress ranges in constant amplitude. The fatigue category of the fillet welding between corrugated steel sheet and the T-beam is evaluated based on the S-N data obtained from the experiment.
Due to many advantages such as light weight, fast installation, high durability, composite bridge deck is considered to be one of the promissing alternatives to concrete bridge deck. The paper presents procedures of finite element analysis and laminate design for composite bridge deck of triangular shape for DB24 load. After design of the section glass reinforced composite deck tube of double triangular section with 200mm profile was fabricated with pultrusion and the procedure are presented.
