  • In this study, we develop a simulation model for Supply Chain Management (SCM) of modular construction based steel bridge. To this end, first, Factory Production/Site Construction system data for the steel bridge construction were collected, and supply chain, entities, resources, processes were defined based on the collected data. After that, a steel bridge supply chain simulation model was developed by creating data, flowchart, and animation modules using Arena software. Finally, verification and validation of the model were performed by using animation check, extreme condition check, average value test, Little' s law test, and actual case value test. As a result, the developed simulation model appropriately expressed the processes and characteristics of the steel bridge supply chain without any logical errors, and provided accurate performance evaluation values for the target system. In the future, we expect that the model will faithfully play a role as a performance evaluation platform in developing management techniques for optimally operating the steel bridge supply chain.

  • Usually the status of a bridge is determined by its structural capability and material strength. Consequently a lot of researchers have studied the failure, the fatigue, and the deterioration of the structure in terms of the structural function of a bridge. However, the overall performance of a bridge may be affected simply by the damage of one of its components. Therefore this study utilized a systematic classification and statistical analysis based on the existing bridge inspection data collected in Taiwan to reach the following goals: (1) assess the performance distribution and deterioration rate for bearing and expansion joint of bridge; (2) find out the right time to do the preventive and essential maintenance for the component of bridge with an empirical method, and to decide what time and which component of a bridge will receive preventive maintenance or regular maintenance.

  • In bridge abutment structures, lateral squeeze due to lateral stress of embankment placement and thermal movement of the bridge structure leads to failure of approach slabs, girders, and bridge bearings. Recently, GRS (Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil) integral bridge has been proposed as a new countermeasure. The GRS integral bridge is a combining structure of a GRS retaining wall and an integral abutment bridge. In this study, numerical analyses which considered construction sequences and earthquake loading conditions are performed to compare the behaviors of conventional PSC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) girder bridge, traditional GRS integral bridge structure and GRS integral bridge with bracket structures (newly developed LH-type GRS integral bridge). The analysis results show that the GRS integral bridge with bracket structures is most stable compared with the others in an aspect of stress concentration and deformation on foundation ground including differential settlements between abutment and backfill. Furthermore, the GRS integral bridge with/without bracket structures was found to show the best performance in terms of seismic stability.

  • Unlike general construction works, bridge construction is mostly done in a high place. The conventional deck form of bridge is installed between precast concrete girders using sleepers, bridging joints and plywoods, and after concrete is poured to the deck, the form materials are removed at high altitudes. When removing the form, it may be dropped on ground, damaging the materials and resulting in economic loss. In addition, safety accidents are likely as the works are performed in a high place, and as the manpower increases, the cost increases. Also, it is difficult to install and remove temporary equipment. Therefore, it is required to develop a system form that allows easier and quicker installation and removal by unskilled workers and ensures safety of workers. In this regard, the study is intended to analyze requirements for the system form for pouring concrete to bridge decks, which can be easily installed and removed. The study result will be used as basic information for development of the system form for pouring concrete to bridge decks.

  • Modular bridge construction enabling better productivity of design and construction by standardized members and robotic construction becomes an important issue in construction industry. Modular structures needs accurate information delivery between design, fabrication and construction processes. BIM (Building Information Modeling) based parametric modeling was proposed for the modular bridge substructure. Considering ranges of parameters of the modular bridge, fixed value, variables and relations were defined and these parametric models were applied to design, analysis and fabrication. Experience from development of new structures can be embedded in the 3D models, and the models provide efficient and precise knowledge delivery.

  • Because the stiffening girders are constructed after the installation of hangers for typical suspension bridge, no additional tensioning to hangers in construction is necessary for this bridge type in which main cable is earth-anchored. However, for self-anchored suspension bridge, hangers are installed after temporarily supporting stiffening girders constructed in previous stage. Therefore, initial tension is required on installing hangers. Tension of hangers varies as the construction proceeds. Hence, it is necessary to determine the most efficient method of installing hangers among several methods. This study presents finite element procedures and the algorithms of construction stage analysis to simulate construction processes. Geometric nonlinear analysis scheme is also included. The most effective method regarding the installation of hangers is presented through the examples of actual bridge model.

  • The temperature data were measured for two years in a bridge specimen and the bridge in service nearby in order to calculate the effective temperature for thermal loads in steel box girder bridge. The maximum and minimum effective temperatures were calculated in the bridge specimen and the bridge according to air temperature in 2014, 2015 and 2years. The effective temperatures calculated in this study were compared the Euro code and the Highway Bridge Design Criteria. The coefficients of determination in the maximum effective temperature and the Euro code for 2 year were calculated from R = 0.927, R = 0.894 in a bridge specimen and the bridge respectively. Those of minimum temperature and the Euro code were analyzed from R = 0.992, R = 0.813 in two bridge respectively. Also, the results were evaluated as being very similar, or slightly increased as compared with the maximum temperature of the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code(Limit State Design).

  • This paper introduces general concepts of jointless bridges and field construction case of semi-integral bridge with psc girder integrating end-diaphragm. The expansion joints need to satisfy thermal and safety conditions of bridges. General bridges with joints have some problems, which are frequently replacement cycle time from mechanical damage or unstable movement, maintenance cost and more. To solve these problems, Integral Abutment Bridges(IAB) have been applied overseas in the 1930s. In Korea, first IAB was constructed in the early 2000s and precast IAB systems was invented and applied lately. Kyungshin overpass bridge in Incheon is the Semi-IAB constructed, the span length is 2@35=70m and the width is 13.9m. The original plan was to use general joint bridge but design field changed with expectations for advanced economic estimation and maintenance. This changed method of B.I.B bridge construction provided not only workability, construction cost but also safety improvement at the same time.

  • In this study, the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge pier was analyzed from durability point of view. The goal of the study is to analyze the crack iniation condition due to construction and present some recommendations for construction conditions of the reinforced concrete bridge pier. The bridge is located at the western port area of Shenzhen, where the climate is high temperature and humidity. To control the cracking of concrete, a construction simulation was carried out for a heat transfer problem as well as a thermal stress problem. A shrinkage model for heat produced due to cement hydration and a Burger constitutive model to simulate the creep effect are used. The modelling based on Femmasse(C) is verified by comparing with the testing results of a real underground abutment. For the bridge pier, the temperature and stress distribution, as well as their evolution with time are shown. To simulate the construction condition, four initial concrete temperatures ($5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$) and three demoulding time tips (48h, 72h, 96h) are investigated. From the results, it is concluded that a high initial concrete temperature could result in a high extreme internal temperature, which causes the early peak temperature and the larger principle stresses. The demoulding time seems to be less important for the chosen study cases. Currently used 72 hours in the construction practice may be a reasonable choice.
