  • A Brake device for the high-speed impacting object is designed using an axial crushing of thin-walled metal cylinder, Thickness of the cylinder is increased smoothly from the impacting end to the fixed end, resulting in the truncated cone shape. Truncated cone shape ensures that plastic hinges are formed sequentially from impacting end. This increases the reliability of brake device working. Computational and real experiments were performed to verify the effects of conical angle. Results indicate that undesirable sudden rise of crushing load can be prevented by applying appropriate conical angle.

  • A cylindrical brake device with plastic deformation is designed to stop the object moving at high velocity. Baseline model is determined based on the design specification and analytic solutions. Using finite element method, effects of various design parameters, such as thickness of the cylinder, clearance between cylinder and rod, and cone angle, to the performance of the brake device are investigated. Cone-type brake device shows better performance than cylindrical brake device with constant thickness in that plastic hinges are generated sequentially from impact end to fixed boundary, thus increasing the reliability of braking operation.

  • Experimental study is conducted to clarify the pneumatic characteristics of brake system for freight car. KNR(Korean National Railroad)'s freight cars have the laden-tare type control valve of brake system. But, laden-tare type control valve has some shortcomings to match the high speed freight car. Newly developed diaphragm type control valve is introduced to adopt freight car for speed-up. The test using the formated train set consisted of 21 cars is conducted to estimate the pneumatic braking efficiency of the mixed train set. From the results of experiment, the pressure characteristics of each brake cylinder show similar patterns qualitatively. But, in the case of release and brake application, quantitative pressure values of brake cylinder are different.

  • In this study, the function of a hydraulic brake system with a vacuum booster is systematically analyzed according to the mutual relations which follow : - the brake pedal force vs. booster cylinder input force - the booster output force vs. master cylinder input force - the hydraulic line pressure vs. braking deceleration. A computer program is developed based on the theory which is able to predict and analyze the pedal force characteristics at the beginning of the initial stage of brake system design. Analytical results show good agreement with the experimental vehicle test.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the improvement method for the failure examples including the vehicle brake system in actual field. It was verified that the indicator plate of pad wear scratched the brake disk because of wearing after displacement of non- identification parts pad. The caliper of other vehicle was installed with brake system verified the phenomenon produced groove in center point because of one side wear when the pad was not fully contacted with the rub disk by other action surface pressure and pad action condition. It verified that the crack phenomenon fatigue was produced by brake thermal deformation because of decreasing the thickness by grinding to modify the non-uniformed wear of brake disk. It verified that the friction sound was produced by the friction phenomenon because of non-uniformed contact of lining and an alien substance with inner of the drum and lining braking by crack phenomenon with brake drum surface.

  • The braking device in railway vehicles decelerates or stops the train by dissipating the thermal energy converted from kinetic energy into the air. Therefore, the brake system is crucial for safety. In this paper, we performed a study on an electromechanical brake actuator using an electrical motor as an alternative to pneumatic air cylinders to reduce the idle running time in braking, which subsequently increases braking distance, and to ensure reliable response characteristics. Especially, to analyze the response characteristics of the electromechanical brake actuator, we measure the delay time, response time and power consumption compared to the air cylinder. It is confirmed that the electromechanical brake actuator can reduce reaction time by 0.1 seconds (Braking Action) and 0.46 seconds (Brake Release) compared to the air cylinder.

  • Hydraulic systems of rope brake for elevators are modelled to evaluate design parameters such as cylinder pressure, pis-ton displacement, accumulator capacity, and so on. To assure the results, experiments were performed. The analysis results agree well with the experimental results. The scheme in this study is expected to be utilized in the design of rope brake system for elevators to get design parameters and to improve the safety.

  • Exhaust brake system for Diesel engines is composed of gate valve, pneumatic cylinder and exhaust brake valve with on-off solenoid. Exhaust brake valve which is core component of exhaust brake system should have characteristics such as high reliability and long life. In this paper. exhaust brake valve with on-off solenoid which is used for vehicle brake system was studied. For the performance evaluation of on-off solenoid, electromagnetic characteristics and dynamic characteristics are analyzed. As a basic study for the performance improvement of exhaust brake system, pneumatic circuit and pneumatic valve with on-off solenoid were suggested and the performance of the pneumatic valve was evaluated through tests.

  • This paper theoretically analyzed the relations between the out-put braking torque and the wheel cylinder pressure in the leading-trailing drum brake for heavy duty truck as the characteristics of friction in break lining, comparing with the results derived from full-scale inertial brake dynamometer test in actual braking condition to develop reliable brake system in extensive using conditions. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The characteristic curve representing the relations between BEF (Brake Effectiveness Factor) and Friction coefficient derived from theoretical analysis are consistent with the experimental results of dynamometer test. 2) According to the results of dynamometer test, the friction coefficient of brake lining is subject to initial brake speed and the actual using temperature in brake system.

  • An integrated analytical model which should have essential dynamics on the longitudinal railway vehicle is developed. The model consists of translational movement, rotational movement, brake actuator, adhesion force between rail and wheel, and brake friction force between wheel and pad. Thus, during the deceleration for stopping, a feedback controller controlling the brake cylinder pressure is designed to improve ride quality and to release friction problems. Through the developed model, the feasibility of controlling the cylinder pressure is verified for the better performances during braking.
