During screening for indigenous prokaryotic species in Republic of Korea in 2021, a total of 21 bacterial strains assigned to the phylum Bacteroidota were isolated from a variety of environmental habitats including pine cone, seaweed, soil, sea sediment, brackish water and moss. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity value of more than 98.7% and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the type strain of the closest bacterial species, it was found that the 21 strains belong to independent and recognized bacterial species. There has been no official report that the identified 21 species have been isolated in Republic of Korea up to date. Therefore, 16 species in six genera of two families in the order Flavobacteriales, two species in two genera of two families in the order Cytophagales, one species in one genus of one family in the order Chitinophagales and two species in one genus of one family in the order Sphingobacteriales are proposed as unrecorded species of the phylum Bacteroidota isolated in Republic of Korea. Their Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic phenotypic characteristics, isolation source, taxonomic status, strain ID and other information are described in the species descriptions.
During a comprehensive investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, 20 and one bacterial strains assigned to the phyla Bacillota and Verrucomicrobiota, respectively, were isolated from diverse environmental habitats, including soil, mud, tidal flat, seawater, sand, sediment, brackish water, and healthy human urine. Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and the formation of robust phylogenetic clades with their closest related reported species, each strain was assigned to an independent and predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding these 21 isolates in Korea, they - 20 species of four families in two orders of the phylum Bacillota and one species of the phylum Verrucomicrobiota - have been reported as unrecorded species in Korea. In addition, Gram staining, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristic, isolation source, and strain ID of each species are also described in the species description sections.
A study on the fine structure of the genus Achnanthes species (Bacillariophyceae) is carried out at 92 stations for taxonomic purposes from January 2009 to April 2013 in Korean marine water, freshwater and brackish water. Twelve Achnanthes species are identified based on a variety of taxonomic characters by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Of these, seven species, Achnanthes cocconeioides, A. groenlandica, A. javanica, A. kuwaitensis, A. parvula, A. pseudolongipes, and A. yaquinensis, are newly recorded in Korean waters. All 12 species are documented concerning a taxonomic key, description, distribution, seasonality, remarks and photographs. Twenty three Achnanthes taxa are identified in the survey.

Seasonal variation in species composition of estuarine fauna in the Han River estuary was determined using monthly samples collected near Ganghwa Island by a bag net from February to December 2009. Total number of species was 86: 54 species of fishes, 16 species of shrimps of crustacean, 12 species of other crustacean such as craps and so on, 3 species of cephalopods and 1 species of jellyfish. Of a total of 86 species, Palaeman carinicauda (32.6%), Acetes japonicus (15.9%), Palaemon gravieri (9.9%), Portunus trituberculatus (7.7%) and Acetes chinensis (6.9%) were predominated in abundance. These 5 crustacean accounted for 73% of total. Abundance, biomass and diversity of Han River estuarine fauna were high in spring and autumn, indicating typical pattern of temperate area. Out of dominant species, the brackish residence species such as Coilia nasus, Chelon haematocheilus, Mugil cephalus, Synechogobius hasta, Lophiogobius ocellicauda, Tridentiger barbatus, Palaeman carinicauda, Palaemon gravieri were collected almost year-round and predominated in abundance. Coastal migratory fauna species such as Coilia mystus, Thryssa hamiltonii, Thryssa adelae, Sardinella zunasi, Engraulis japonicus, Portunus trituberculatus, Acetes japonicus, Collichthys lucidus, Pampus argenteus were most plentiful from spring through autumn. Their adult coastal migratory entered the estuary in spring and large numbers of their juveniles were grew in summer and autumn until moving out to deeper waters for over-wintering, indicating they use estuary as nursing ground. Diadromous fish such as Anguila japonica adults were collected in autumn during their downstream migration. Brackish fauna and crustacean, especially shrimps were predominant, and few contaminant indicator species collected in the Han River estuary, indicating this area maintains the characteristics of natural estuary ecosystem.
Our study aimed to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea. A total of 29 bacterial species in the phylum Proteobacteria were isolated from freshwater and sediment of rivers and brackish zones in Korea. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (${\geq}98.8%$) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to an independent and predefined bacterial species. To our knowledge, there is no official report or publication that has previously described these 29 species in Korea. Specifically, we identified 10, 12, and seven species of eight, 12, and seven genera that belong to classes Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria, respectively; all are reported as previously unrecorded bacterial species in Korea. The Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs for each are also described.
Species composition and abundance of fish larvae were studied from May 1988 through August 1989 in the Han River Estuary and adjacent Kyunggi Bay, Korea. Of 23 taxa identified, Coilia nasus, llisha elongata, and Cyprinidae spp. were dominated. Maximum density (3,5771/1,000m)$^3$ occurred in August 1988 and minimum (3/1,m$^3$) in February 1989. O1igo- ormesohaline species dominated during ebb tides while polyhaline species during flood tides. Correspondence analysis revealed that three distinctive species groups; oligohaline species, Coilia nasus, Ilisha elongata and Cyprinidae spp., which dominated at both channels of Kwanghwa Island (stations 1, 2), mesohaline species, Sardinella zunasi and Gobiidae spp., at the mouth of Yeomha Channel (station 3), and polyhaline species, Engraulis japonicus and Syngnathus schlegeli, in the middle of Kyunggi Bay (station 4). Coilia nasus was the most abundant species and reported first time in the study area. Given the species composition and density of fish larvae, the Han River Estuary is considered to be a major spawning and nursery ground for brackish water species such as Coilia nasus, Ilisha elongata and some Cyprinidae spp.
Fishborne zoonotic metacercariae have not been reported from brackish water and marine fish from Vietnam waters although these parasites are common in the country's freshwater fish. Both wild-caught and cultured grouper (Epinephelus coioides and Epinephelus bleekeri), and mullet (Mugil cephalus) from brackish and marine waters located in Khanh Hoa province in central coastal Vietnam were examined, and found positive for zoonotic trematode metacercariae. From grouper, Heterophyopsis continua and Procerovum varium were recovered. The prevalence of H. continua ranged from 2.0 to 6.0% and that for P. varium ranged from 11.6 to 15.8%. Mullet were infected with Pygidiopsis summa and H. continua; both of these species are new records for Vietnam. The prevalence of P. summa in mullet was generally high, ranging from 17.6 to 75.5%, and was significantly higher than the prevalence of H. continua (2.5 to 32.4%). There were no significant differences in the prevalence of metacercariae between grouper from natural or cultured habitats, indicating that the highest risk of infection occurs in the wild-caught state prior to their placement in culture. Further, there was no difference in metacercarial prevalence between the 2 species of grouper. Infected wild-caught seed were only observed from January to October. Monthly variation in prevalence suggests seasonal variation in mullet infections occurs in this region with the highest transmission taking place from October to December. Basic investigations on the ecology and epidemiology of these intestinal flukes need to be carried out to determine their significance as a public health problem and the aspects of their biology that may be vulnerable to control interventions.
An estuary is a water ecosystem with a high abundance of the species diversity, due to a variety of complex physicochemical factors of the area where freshwater and ocean mixed. The identification of Corbicula species in the estuary environments is difficult because of various morphological characteristics. In this study, we provide taxonomic information on Corbicula species with taxonomic difficulties using morphological and genetic analysis. This study was conducted on clams from the Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay, one of the major production area of marsh clam in Korea. As a result, we characterized Cytocrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of the Corbicula. The 636 bp nucleotide sequences of COI have 98% homology among Corbicula species collected from 2 sites of Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay. The phylogenetic analysis with 17 species of Corbicula indicated that most of the species collected from Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay were brackish water clam (Corbicula japonica), and only one Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea). The evolutionary distance between C. japonica and C. fluminea was less than 0.003. Therefore, it was confirmed that C. japonica is phylogenetically closely related to C. fluminea. In 9 species of Cyrenidae, phylogenetic tree was classified into three lineages. These results will be used as an important data for an identification of clam species by providing genetic information for Corbicula species with a morphological diversity.
A total of 30 bacterial strains were identified in the classes Betaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria in the study of prokaryotic species in Korea. These strains were isolated from a variety of environmental sources, including soil, tidal flat, mud, wetland, pine cone, seaweed, sea sediment, and brackish water. Phylogenetic analysis showed that isolates were identified based on high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (≥98.7%) with the predefined bacterial type species. In this study, we present data on previously unreported species from Korea, including 10 species from three families of one order in the class Betaproteobacteria and 20 species from 12 families of nine order in the class Gammaproteobacteria. Morphological, biochemical characteristics, isolation sources, and NIBR deposit numbers are provided in the description sections.
The authors examined intertidal and sublittoral balanomorph barnacles which were collected from 38 localities in South Korea during the period from 1963 to 1978. 2. Identified and classified materials are composed of 15 species and 2 subspecies, all of which are described, under 10 genera and 5 damilies, of which 2 species and 1 subspecies are new to Korea as follows: Chelonibia patula, Chirona (Striatobalanus) amaryllis, Solidobalanus (Hesperibalanus) hesperius hesperius. 3. As dominant species, Chthamalus challengeri and Tetraclita squamosa japonica are widely distributed in Korea through East Sea, South Sea and Yellow Sea. 4. Balanus albicostatus and B. kondakovi are commonly found in intertidal brackish waters of Yellos Sea and South Sea, whereas, B. trigonus and Megabalanus rosa are typical sublittoral forms.
