  • The theory of non-prismatic folded plate structures was reported by the senior author in 1965 and 1966. Fiber reinforced composite materials are strong in tension. The structural element for such tension force is very thin and weak against bending because of small bending stiffnesses. Naturally, the box type section is considered as the optimum structural configuration because of its high bending stiffnesses. Such structures can be effectively analyzed by the folded plate theory with relative ease. The "hollow" bending member with uniform cross-section can be treated as prismatic folded plates which is a special case of the non-prismatic folded plates. Tn this paper, the result of analysis of a folded plates with one box type uniform cross-section is presented. Each plate is made of composite laminates with fiber orientation of [ABBCAAB]$_r$, with A=-B=$45^{\circ}$, and C=$90^{\circ}$. The influence of the span to depth ratio is also studied. When this ratio is 5, the difference between the results of folded plate theory and beam theory is 1.66%. is 1.66%.

  • The Rayleigh-Ritz procedure based on energy method is used to present analytically the natural frequencies and the critical buckling loads for four types of loading conditions: (1) uniaxial, (2) biaxial, (3) positive shear and (4) negative shear, of the rectangular, composite plates unidirectionally stiffened with box beam type stiffeners. In analysis the discrete stiffener theory is adopted to present the effect of stiffeners in the plate structure. The convergence study is presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the results. Contour plots of the vibrated and buckled mode shapes are shown for some examples. The effect of various parameters such as numbers, position, aspect ratio of stiffener and layer angle, aspect ratio of plate are focused.

  • In bridge structures, damage may induce an additional deflection which may naturally contain essential information about the damage. However, inverse mapping from the damage-induced deflection to the actual damage location and severity is generally complex, particularly for statically indeterminate systems. In this paper, a new load concept, called the positive-bending-inspection-load (PBIL) is proposed to construct a simple inverse mapping from the damage-induced deflection to the actual damage location. A PBIL for an inspection region is defined as a load or a system of loads which guarantees the bending moment to be positive in the inspection region. From the theoretical investigations, it was proven that the damage-induced chord-wise deflection (DI-CD) has the maximum value with the abrupt change in its slope at the damage location under a PBIL. Hence, a novel damage localization method is proposed based on the DI-CD under a PBIL. The procedure may be summarized as: (1) identification of the modal flexibility matrices from acceleration measurements, (2) design for a PBIL for an inspection region of interest in a structure, (3) calculation of the chord-wise deflections for the PBIL using the modal flexibility matrices, and (4) damage localization by finding the location with the maximum DI-CD with the abrupt change in its slope within the inspection region. Procedures from (2)-(4) can be repeated for several inspection regions to cover the whole structure complementarily. Numerical verification studies were carried out on a simply supported beam and a three-span continuous beam model. Experimental verification study was also carried out on a two-span continuous beam structure with a steel box-girder. It was found that the proposed method can identify the damage existence and damage location for small damage cases with narrow cuts at the bottom flange.

  • This research aims to analyze of prestressed composite hollow-core slab and box type steel beam. The smeared crack model used in abaqus for the modeling of hollow core reinforced concrete, including cracking of the concrete, rebar and concrete interaction using the tension stiffening concept, and rebar yield. The structure modeled is a simply supported hollow core spancrete slab subjected spa-h beams and prestressed in one direction. The hollow core spancrete slab is subjected to four-point bending. The concrete-rebar interaction that occur as the concrete begins to crack are of major importance in determining the spancrete slab's response between its initial, deformation and its collapse. This smeared crack model used in analysis involved non-liner concrete analysis concept.

  • The box system that consists only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs we adopted in many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. Recently, many of the box system buildings with pilotis has been constructed to meet the architectural design requirements. This structure has abrupt change in the structural properties between the upper and lower parts divided by transfer girders. For an accurate analysis of a structure with pilotis, it is necessary to have the buildings modeled into a finer mesh. But it would cost tremendous amount of computational time and memory. In this study, an efficient method is proposed for an efficient analysis of buildings those have pilotis with drastically reduced time and memory. In the proposed analysis method, transfer gilders are modeled using super elements developed by the matrix condensation technique and fictitious beams are introduced to enforce the compatibility conditions at the boundary of each element. The analyses of example structures demonstrated that the proposed method used for the analysis of a structure with pilotis will provide analysis results with accuracy for the design of box system buildings.

  • Generally, a box tube, which is used for an existing square CFT structure, is made by welding four plates. The manufacturing efficiency of this steel tube is poor, and it also needs special welding technology to weld its internal diaphragm and the through diaphragm. Therefore, an interior-anchor-type square steel tube was developed using the method of cold-forming thin plates to prevent welding of the stress concentration position, and to maximize the section efficiency. And, considering of the flow of beam flange load, the efficiency of erection and the weldability of the diaphragm to thin walled steel column, the external diaphragm connection was selected as the suitable type for the welded built-up square CFT column to beam connection. And, an analytical study and tests were conducted to evaluate the structural performance of the suggested connection details and to verify the suggested equations for the connection details. Through this study, the composite effect of the internal anchor to concrete, the resistance and stress distribution of the connections before and after the existing column is welded to the beam, the effective location of welding in connection were analyzed.

  • The calculation method which takes into account the shear lag effects on the ultimate transverse bending moment of a SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) ship has been developed. In case of the ultimate bending strength analysis of conventional monohull ships and general box girder structures, the hypothesis that plane section remains plane after bending can be employed but not in the case of the structures having wide flange. For the ultimate bending strength analysis of such structures, a new method which can take into account the effect of shear lag on the ultimate bending strength has been developed by adopting more reasonable assumption that warping distortion of the section takes place inthe same way as the actual stress distribution. Finally, the proposed method has been applied to a a SWATH cross deck structure.

  • The finite element analyses of a composite hingeless rotor blade in forward flight have been performed to investigate the influence of blade design parameters on the blade stability. The blade structure is represented by a single cell composite box-beam and its nonclassical effects such as transverse shear and torsion-related warping are considered. The nonlinear periodic differential equations of motion are obtained by moderate deflection beam theory and finite element method based on Hamilton principle. Aerodynamic forces are calculated using the quasi-steady strip theiry with compressibility and reverse flow effects. The coupling effects between the rotor blade and the fuselage are included in a free flight propulsive trim analysis. Damping values are calculated by using the Floquet transition matrix theory from the linearized equations perturbed at equilibrium position of the blade. The aeroelastic results were compared with an alternative analytic approch, and they showed good correlation with each other. Some parametric investigations for the helicopter design variables, such as pretwist and precone angles are carried out to know the aeroelastic behavior of the rotor.

  • The demand of underground structure such as box culvert for electric power transmission is increasing more and more, and the service life extension of these structures is very important. Recent observations in field and experimental evidences show that even steel in concrete can be corroded by carbonation reaction of cover concrete. Carbonation-induced corrosion in concrete may often occur in a high carbon dioxide environment. In this study, the risk of carbonation of box culverts in our nation was evaluated by measuring the carbonation rate and concrete cover depth in field. Then, the service life due to carbonation at the cover depth was calculated by in situ information and the Monte Carlo simulation in a probabilistic way. Additionally, the accelerated carbonation test for the cracked beam specimen was executed and the crack effect owing to the carbonation process on the service life of box culvert was numerically investigated via Monte Carlo simulation based on the experimental results.

  • This report is on the Reinforcing System(MFRI) for Concrete Structure using FRP ROD & High-Performance Mortar. The main characteristic of this system is as follow. First, the fiber rods in this system have seven times greater tensile strength than general reinforcing steel bars(re-bar) and the weight is a fifth lighter. Camels coated on the fiber rods' surfaces to improve adhesive strength and pull-out strength. Second, high strength shotcrete mortar is has very good workability and low rebound rate. After installing the Fiber Rods, Shotcrete mortar Is applied or sprayed to finish reinforcement. Finally, MFRI system has excellent fire-resisting performance and sogood tolerance against external environment by inserting fiber rods and reinforcing materials into mortar which has high compressive strength. It is applied to bridge slab, utility box and tunnel of civil engineering works, and beam and slab of building structures.
